I'm still a beginner, but here's some very useful tools I've been using.
thejapanesepage, I used a combination of this and wikipedia to learn the kana and the stroke order for each kana. I did start with the hirigana, and the katakana second. http://thejapanesepage.com/getting-started
wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana
kanateacher, this is great for practicing how well you can recall the kana. http://www.unckel.de/kanateacher/index-en.html
kanjirepeater, I haven't used this much yet, but am about to. I plan on using it's convenient links to wikipedia to learn more about each kanji, including stroke order. http://unckel.de/kanjirepeater/index.html?ref=kanateacher-en
rikaichan, this is a very useful dictionary addon for firefox. I don't know how many people use firefox, but this is a great addon to consider, though it does require a download I believe (it's been a while since I started using it). https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2471/
I hope these are helpful.
