The dark furred lioness prowled through the long grasses, her lithe body kept low to the ground as she listened intently. She was on a hunting trip, which she probably should have been leading. She was, after all, the best. It was so obviously so. But, alas, it must have slipped the mind to announce her as such, for it was simply the three of them and no set leader. But Nikonkoni, being the best, was not about to brag or anything. Oh no. It was generally accepted after all, being the best meant she wouldn’t need to tell people. They would already know.

Except for Simosihle, with whom she rivaled so ferociously. Simo was the only one who could keep Nikon on her toes…for now. Someday she’d surpass her pale-furred companion, and then everyone would know who was truly superior! But for now, for now they were hunting. Nikon, Simo, and another of the dark-furred lionesses, Njalo’sasa. The three of them ought to make quick work of a hunt, even if it seemed prey would be difficult to find in this weather.

The clouds above were dark and forbidding, heavy with rain. The humid air sang with tension about to break, she could feel it tingling in her fur and it made her heart beat faster. Not with fear, mind, but excitement. She loved the ferocity of nature, loved to live in it, to challenge it, and survive. So when she felt and saw it rolling in, she instantly offered herself as going hunting, and teased Simosihle into coming with her. She wouldn’t have had it any other way, rivals though they were Nikon felt…odd…without her pale-furred companion alongside her.

Besides, hunting needed doing just like any other day. A little rain wasn’t nearly enough to scare Nikon off after all!
