how would you explain a .hack/ game to someone without confusing someone?

i tried to explain .hack// and .hack//g.u to a friend and confused the hell out of them lol but i gave her a simple explanation afterwards saying "it's a game based on a tv show about a mmorpg that got a virus called aida and the rl players that come in contact with them fall into a coma." i left it at that to stop from confusing her anymore then my first explanation.

Have you ever tried explaining .hack// and or .hack//g.u. to anyone? if so how did you say or do it and what were the reactions you got?

I generally say something like, "It's a series about an MMORPG called The World," as an opening sentence. Then I start to explain it based on that, saying that an MMORPG is a Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game if need be. For IMOQ, I think I'd say something like, "This kid Kite is convinced to play the game by his friend, but then due to a mysterious encounter with a glitch his friend goes comatose, and Kite figures the best way to figure out how to revive him is to investigate within the game. Stuff happens, and yeah." And then I say stuff about whatever character I was referring to that started the explanation. For .hack//G.U., it would be, "This dude Haseo starts playing The World and ends up meeting Shino. Shino ends up getting PKed by this mysterious dude Tri-Edge and falling into a coma. Haseo is all, 'OMG NO WAY SHINO I'LL AVENGE YOUUUUU,' and chases after Tri-Edge. After becoming a legendary PKK he meets Tri-Edge, gets data drained--a funky attack--and ends up at level one again. Then more stuff happens, and yeah. It's a fun game," and then something about how Haseo met character I was referring to, description, etc. That's how I generally would go about it, except less clearly due to being a total fangirl. >>"

I've done it a few times, and found that drawing pictures helps a great deal. Generally an overview of the series would be "a mysterious ******** of a series involving a virtual reality game that can make people go comatose and trying to figure out why it happens and how to reverse it before those people in comas take it one step further and stop living." Followed by "it tends to make the player/reader/viewer think for themselves and is a rather intelligent series that doesn't give you all the answers but makes you find them, so if you like using that brain of yours then you'll like the series, and if you want to get handed all the answers and directions on a silver platter, you might not." And then perhaps "it really is good, just don't play too much of IMOQ at one time because the gameplay likes to drag the story down." Of course, actual explanations may vary depending on interest and how much time we have to kill (and how much paper is readily available for scribbling on), but that's about it.

Trust me, not as bad as trying to explain Chrono Cross. Which I've also done. Now /THAT/ is a ********. And I love it. <3

I've had the same problem. I just say that it's a anime about a famous MMO where people fall into comas and weird stuff happens within the game that affects the people outside playing the game.
I explained that really poorly, I know. D:

I ask them if they've played TWEwY or P4, and if they say 'yes' I say its kind of like that, if not, I give them the .hack wikia website and wish them good luck.........explaining .hack to some people is like explaining WoW to a 90-year-old technology illiterate person from a tiny village who's never heard of electricity or indoor plumbing and speaks an entirely different language...

"You play as a dude playing a dude in an MMO! It's actually fun, trust me!"

But then again, I tend to be exceedingly bad at summaries. So I tend to expose my friends to either things from a show/game or silly fanworks in order to get them to show interest.

I got a kick out of that line.
There are probably far worse things to attempt explaining than .hack. Like The World God Only Knows. Ever try telling someone about a manga that's about a dude who is really good at those games where the goal is to make the girl fall in love with you and ends up with a contract with a devil where he must make real life girls fall in love with him or he'll be beheaded? It can be awkward.

I'd be like this:

Okay, Okay. Listen to me! It's basically like a GIANT WOW like thing, with humans, things and other things. No! the things don't matter! Stop swatting my hand away. Okay, okay. So there's these bad things, like Reapers that kill people cause they traveled into their area or looked too long at this girl. She's such a troublemaker. No, no, listen! She's not a babe, she's a b***h. She gets everyone she comes into contact with killed. Okay., shut up. So yeah. ONe dudes friend gets all killed. So he goes on this rampage and gathers some more misfits, like mothers and teenage girls. No, it's not a harem. Shut up. So yeah. They track these dudes, the reapers and like, kill them but manage to f-up the whole interwebs. Shut up, I know what I'm talking about. So yeah, then a sequel comes out and it's the same cept no reapers, just a very big ***** man. Yeah, ***** man with a fetist for High school dudes. So he goes all Sasuke on the world until he get's his a** kicked. Then he meets up with his Misfits and they defeat *****. But then some tenticle monsters come and attack them. No, this isn't some porn, shut up. And the dudes little sister started it all! So, she tries to buddy with the misfits. And then all the coma people are alive! WOW! Yeah, a total let down. They could've left a few of them dead. neutral

Yeah. That's how it'd go down.
