Falln_angel had been enjoying a tall mug of holiday cheer at her favourite tavern, letting the roaring fire chase away the winter chill, when a distinctive laugh caught her attention. Near the centre of the room sat a handful of guards, one of whom looked very familiar. Drink in hand, she made her way to their table.
"Trip!" she cried when she reached the guards. "It is you! Merry Modmas!"
Trip grunted and set down his ale. "That's what we're fighting for."
"Fighting? What are you talking about? It's Modmas! There's no fighting, just peace and good will... and presents of course."
And so Trip told her of Gambino's evil plan and the recent Grunny invasion.
"Sounds like you need all the help you can get," falln_angel said when he had finished. "Where do I sign up?"
The other guards looked dubious, and one of them tried to warn her that this was no job for civilians, but Trip came to her defence, reassuring his comrades that she was a more-than-capable fighter. "But," he concluded, shooting her a meaningful look, "I think this is something that can wait until morning when you have a little less nog in you."
"Don't be ridiculous, Trip, I'm fine," falln_angel insisted before stumbling into the table to illustrate her point.
Trip sighed and, reaching into his pocket, produced a small vial of green liquid. "Take this at least," he said, handing her the vial. "Just in case."
Falln_angel shot him a quick grin and pocketed the vial before weaving her way to the door. "Thanks, Trip. See you around," she called before walking out into the night.
Outside, the world shone with the pale, ghostly light of the moon reflected on fresh show. The cold winter air had something of a sobering effect on her, and she decided that it might be best to go home after all. Surely she could be of the most use after a good night's sleep.
All was silent. The streets seemed to be completely deserted as she walked past darkened buildings in the direction of her house. She moved slowly, keeping her eyes open for the sight of green ears poking out of the blanket of white. She was nearly at her front door when she saw it, a small Grunny perched atop a pile of snow on the far side of the street. She could have ignored it, ducked inside her own little house and gone out Grunny hunting in the morning, but that would have been too much like quitting. Instead, she reached down and scooped up a double handful of snow which she quickly formed into a tightly-packed ball and then threw with as much force as she could manage.
The snowball missed the Grunny by several feet, but it got the thing's attention. Fangs bared, the Grunny sprang off of its perch and bounded through the snow towards her.
Suddenly, falln_angel realized that she was unarmed. Looking around frantically, she noticed her neighbour's snow shovel only a few feet away and made a dive for it, her hands closing around the handle just as the Grunny launched itself at her head. Rolling quickly onto her back, she swung the shovel at the Grunny, sending it tumbling into a nearby snowbank. It re-emerged almost instantly, completely unharmed.

Falln_angel sprang to her feet and faced the Grunny. For a long moment neither of them moved. She took a slow step back towards her front door, and the Grunny took a small hop forward, its red eyes glowing menacingly in the moonlight.
Another step, and again the Grunny followed.
A third step, and it leapt at her again. Falln_angel swung her shovel once more, but instead of hurting the Grunny, the blade simply cracked and broke off. Armed, now, only with the handle, she turned and ran the last few steps to her door and quickly ducked inside. The Grunny hit the door with a thud as it closed behind her.
"These Grunnies are harder than I remember them," she mused to herself as she walked to the kitchen to make some tea. "I'll need to make sure I'm better armed when I go out tomorrow. And I supposed Mr. Nichols is going to want a new snow shovel."
