[Irako of the Desert]

Stage 1: Attack of the Grunnies
The First Encounter

Irako walked dejectedly through the Towns, shivering in the icy winter air. Her breath made clouds of pale vapor that floated away and dissipated as if they were ghosts. She held a book of carols in one hand and a set of hand bells in the other, since she'd been out caroling to her fellow Gaians. Unfortunately, they hadn't been appreciative of her gesture of holiday goodwill. Many doors had been slammed in her face, along with rude comments like "LOL U SUCKZ BALLS U SOUNDED LYKE U WERE MERDERING THINGS AN STUFF LOLOLOLOL LOZER!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!" Irako was well aware of the fact that she wasn't exactly an opera star, but it was the thought that counted, wasn't it?

A heavy sigh created a huge cloud of vapor that hung about her for a moment, obscuring her vision. She continued forward, but failed to see the patch of ice just in front of her. Predictably, her foot slipped, and Irako fell backward with a yelp, arms flailing wildly in a desperate attempt to retain her balance. The flailing didn't help, though, so she landed on the ground with a thud.

"Oooowww..." Irako lay there for a moment, silently cursing the fates. Couldn't she just try and show some holiday spirit without the universe knocking her on her back? She did her best to be good all year, participating in Gaia's events, and being nice to everybody she met, no matter how much of a troll they were. Her eyes squeezed shut in frustration.

Suddenly, off to her left, there was a high-pitched growl. Actually, it was more like squealing, but it was clear that the intent to intimidate was there. Irako opened her eyes and glanced over to see red eyes gleaming in the darkness. The little creatures bounded forward in a manner that might have been cute, if the creatures were something else that was far less dangerous. Irako sat up and scooted backward in a panic as she recognized the green fur and floppy ears. Two Grunnies were moving towards her, doing their version of growling and slobbering with anticipation of sinking their needle teeth into her flesh.

The grunnies advanced, their greedy little eyes shining red in the dim light. Irako continued to scoot backwards, unsuccessfully trying to scramble to her feet. One of the grunnies feinted, snapping at her boots. The other grunny rushed forward, taking advantage of the other's distraction to lunge towards Irako's face. She screamed, and threw her arms up, feeling little needle teeth latch onto her hand. A detached part of her mind noted that it didn't hurt as much as she thought it would. Then the grunny bit down harder, causing blood to start flowing. Along with the blood came sharp pain that shot all the way up her arm.

Irako tried to fling away the bloodthirsty brute, but it clung to her tenaciously, sinking its teeth in more deeply. She tried to pull it off, but received another bite for her efforts. The other grunny had seized hold of her leg and was industriously gnawing at her boots. The soft leather and rabbit fur was no match for the chewing powers of the little green rodent.

Irako cast about frantically, trying to think of what to do against these savage creatures.

The grunnies continued with their masticating on Irako's limbs. She tried to kick the one chewing on her leg off, but its grip was just as determined as the one latched to her hand. Panic flooded through her as she imagined these two stupid little rodents eating her alive, and being unable to do anything about it. She'd wished she'd done more hunting of the Animated outside of the civilized areas of Gaia. Perhaps with a little more skill, she'd be able to handle these two puny rodents.

Then she remembered fighting against the little Gramsters in Gaia's underground sewers. Weren't those basically tiny grunnies? They would have the same weaknesses, right? An idea bloomed in her mind, and she acted immediately.

She swung the grunny that was latched onto her hand at the one on her leg, and succeeded in knocking it off of her. It squealed angrily and leaped onto the offending grunny, sinking its teeth into one of the long ears. This caused the other grunny to squeal in pain and surprise, and it released Irako's hand to retaliate back at its attacker. She immediately sprang up as the two grunnies wrestled and snapped at each other, proud of her achievement. Gramsters always had a tendency to fight among themselves over everything. In the sewers, she had used her rings to attack the gramsters from afar and watched as they turned on each other, obviously thinking that their neighbors were the cause of sudden pain. Apparently, grunnies thought the same way.

Irako gathered up her carol book and handbells that she'd dropped earlier, letting the grunnies wrestle and fight each other. She intended to run home and call somebody, anybody at all! Surely there was someone who knew what to do. Besides, she had to fix her ripped up boots and clean up her injured hand.

The handbells rang gently as she walked off. Suddenly, the grunnies broke off their fight, ears swiveling to catch the sound of the handbells. With angry squeals, they realized their victim was leaving. It only took a few short bounds for them to catch up to Irako and latch onto her legs. She screamed in surprise, and began wacking them with her carol book and handbells. Wasn't there going to be any escape for her?
