I'm looking at converting to Islam but I don't know of any mosques in the area, I don't know how to read or speak Arabic, and I don't know how my family would take the news.

Salam to you brother, You don't have to know how to read or Arabic, the arabic in Quran is completely different from what is casually spoken. Your family might resent you for converting or they would either support you, but the first one is more likely, you would have to be patient and have faith in Allah to guide you through this matter. Try asking around your area for a mosque, the Imam of the mosque is the best person to speak to and give you proper guidance on all the issues. Best of luck~ biggrin

I converted to Islam in 2009, Alhamdulilah.
The life of a convert is not easy, my family is half unsupportive half apathetic. But on the Day of Judgment, your family will not be a reason to give for choosing not to practice life on the straight path, You will be alone with your decisions.
I realized this, and at first I was like.."I can never convert because my family would never approve" But after I realized the weight of how my decisions regarding Islam would impact my life now and in the Hereafter...I did take my Shahaddah.
I dont regret it and the more I learn about Islam, the more I love it. I am forever grateful to Allah (subhan wa ta'ala) for guiding me to this amazing religion.

like Liono said, you do not need to worry on how to speak nor read Arabic. (because i also understand nothing on arabic language) - after all, Islam is universal. Then, as you learn to read & understand the Quran, you will learn (a few at least) the Arab used in Quran. (this happens to me, where i only understand the word 'sami' & 'basir' which mean 'listen' & 'watch' respectively sweatdrop (or is it otherwise?))

Do you need to get in contact with a mosque if you want to convert? Because their are seriously no mosques near me, and I have been thinking about converting.
