The party was a hit thanks to Suzy. Kathy was a good friend of hers and dragged Suzy into helping her making the party come to life. Jack had taken her and they both had a great time. Both only had sodas where everyone else drank to their hearts content. Near the end of the night, Suzy could tell Jack wanted to leave, so it was time to go. Suzy remembered the one time Jack had alcohol and it wasn’t pretty. At least, not to him. If it wasn’t for her, the video of him drunk would have hit youtube in no time resulting in his parents finding out and Suzy no longer having great plans for her weekend.
“Bye, Kathy.” Suzy said in the hug. “Don’t let anyone drive home drunk. Promise me.” Suzy pulled away to make sure Kathy agreed. When she did, Suzy left it at that and followed Jack out. All in all, it was a great night and she had fun with Jack the way she always did. She always knew she could with him around.
“Of course, Jacky. I would never go to a party without you.” Suzy replied to Jack. “And I told you she was nice. Everyone loves her.” Suzy thought of setting up Jack and Kathy to get together but thought against it. Just the idea of Jack being with another girl bugged her. As usual, Jack held the door open as well as the car door. When she got in the car, she didn’t really think much of Jack’s question.
“Yeah, about four years.” She answered as she put on her seatbelt.

It hurt to stand. My muscles ached but I wanted to see Jack. Just the fact that he was alive would set my mind at ease. My mom talked nonstop to doctors, nurses and anyone else who would listen to her lawyer tone. Jack’s parents were out of town. I tried calling them but it went straight to voicemail. I left a voicemail on his mom’s phone, hoping she would call me back soon. I was pacing in the lobby, thanks to my mom, I was able to go home sooner than expected but I wasn’t going anywhere.
My mom walked up to me with a happier attitude but she was still grim. “We can see him but from what the doctors are telling me, it’s not going to look good.” I didn’t care that was all I needed.
“What room is he in?” I asked. As soon as my mom uttered the numbers, I got to his room as quickly as possible but I didn’t go very far. My legs were too painful. A nurse grabbed me and escorted me to a chair. No doubt, I would not be able to go home just yet. But I was on a mission. I rolled into Jack’s room and, if it wasn’t for the chair, I would have fallen over. The only sound in the room was the beeping of the machine. It was a reassurance that he was alive but he looked terrible.
I rolled my chair closer to his bed. The nurse in the room watched me. I knew she wanted to kick me out but she wouldn’t. Not now. I could feel more tears forming as I continued to look at him. The more I did, the more I hated seeing him like this. Somehow, I wanted to blame this on myself. What would his mom think? Would she think it my fault? From behind me I felt hands rest on my shoulders. I knew mom had walked in. My father would have come but he had been in Iraq for the past year. Mom would call him later to tell him what happened.
I didn’t want to go back to my room. If it were up to me, I would have stayed in his room all night but I knew, at some point, I would have to go back to my room. But for now, I would stay by his side until he, at least, awoke.
