Seraphina had been spending her time thinking the last few days. She was trying to figure out what she wanted to do when she grew up and everything that came into her mind just didn't work. Being a Solider didn't work she couldn't bring herself to fight like that and a guard didn't work to a point either. But she still didn't want to do the other jobs. She didn't want to leave home long enough to scout out water didn't like something she wanted to do. She went through all of the things that she could do in her mind often trying to figure out what she was going to do, not very sure at all. She was very sad for a while, very sad and she didn't know what to do.
But it wasn't that long before when she heard of a lioness named Ea in the pride. She is the Pride's medic and the idea of a Medic was very interesting to her. It was something that wasn't violent but it still had the firekin spirit. She could take care of others from battle she could do good and she knew that she could do it. She could take on that responsibility and she knew that she could do it well and since she figured that out she had been more excited then anything else! She truly was excited and she was waiting for the perfect day, TODAY!
Today was the day that she was going to meet with the lioness. She was nervous though. She had heard that Ea was a bit of a grumpy lioness. She knew that it was going to be a Challenge on it's own.She could do it though! She woke up early and headed out of the den in a hurry. she told her father the night before where she was going so she could just go there. She approached the medic den carefully, poking her nose in and looking around. She was wondering where the older lioness was. She was hoping that the lioness wouldn't get mad at her for being here too.

"Hold still!" came a shout, reverberating off the heavy sandstone walls of the medical dens. While other prides might have been blessed with a quiet, somber ward... care under Ea was something of a wild affair. With lions dipping in and out to have various scrapes and scratches looked at, it was always lively. Even patients half dead still found reasons to kick and scream.
Veru was very good at both. "You crazy, horrible lioness let me go!" The white male groaned. "Just let me die, please. It's okay. No, really. Really. Just stop-"
"Shut up, you big baby," Ea snarled, pressing her patient's head down into the sandy ground. The black cat was poised over Veru, with one paw firmly on his head, and the other trying her best to either strangle or bandage him. It seemed like it could go either way at this point. "What kind of firekin are you supposed to make if you keep moaning and groaning like that? You know what they're talking about? They're talking about cutting off water for here! You won't like that very much will you!"
Veru groaned, and wriggled pathetically underneath her. "You're all crazy, that's why-"
"You could leave," Ea said flatly. She bit the end of a piece of shredded hide, pushing a few odd bright green flowers into the cracks between the bandages. "Now stay put. Don't move. It's only partially poisonous. It probably won't kill you."
Veru sighed, and put his paws over his head. "I feel like I'm being experimented on."
"Well, if you'd stop getting sick then I wouldn't have to." The cat remarked flatly. She seemed about to launch into another tirade, when she noticed the small red cub approaching. Her brow furrowed. She was seeing far too many cubs lately. But, at least this one was moving about. "Stay put. I'm serious, that thing will kill you."
With her warning in place, Ea strode up to the front of the den. "What's the matter with you? I don't see an eye popped out. Are you sick?"

The female was a little startled by the sudden sounds of the female's voice, well and the other voice. She was startled, a little afraid in an odd way. In an odd way she was a little afraid and she wanted to go home but she realized that wasn't the firekin thing to do! She was a Firekin! She could do anything that she wanted and she could take on anything like this. She looked into the den and watched the lioness. Was this the kind of things that she was supposed to do in this job? Oh she wasn't sure if she could do that!
She stood at the den her head and her heart fighting with each other. He heart wanted her to stay and wanted her to learn and thrive and do well. she wanted to do this she wanted to help others, not fight. But her head was looking at this rather large black lioness and thinking about how small she was. Her head was going back and forth, the small lioness sat back on her haunches looking in thinking carefully.
But if she wanted to run it was too late now, the lioness was coming her way and she bounced on to her paws as she looked up at the lioness puffing her chest out for a little bit. "No, Miss Ea!" she addressed the lioness as if she would a normal elder, she made sure that the lioness was going to know that Seraphina respected her. "M-My father told me that if I wanted to be a Medic I would have to talk to you." She looked up at the lioness and spoke once again. "I really want to help, I want to be like you."

Ea's strange eyes narrowed in thought. On one hand, she hated kids and kids without injuries typically got a firm boot in the rump out the door. On the other hand, she was an egotist and hearing that someone wanted to be like her was oddly thrilling. But oh, she did hate kids... the black cat squirmed. In the end, she ruled in favor of not wanting kids hanging around.
"Look, kid, this isn't playtime." She said, pointing out the cave front. "If you want to go play doctor with your friends, that's your business. But I'm a busy person, and I've got people dying in here."
"You said this wouldn't kill me-!" Veru shouted from the back.
Ea continued on, as if she hadn't heard him. "It's not pretty, and while it's super 'cute' that you want to be like me, I'm not a nice person and you probably will cough up something gross the first broken bone you see. So, save yourself the trouble." Her neck craned. "This isn't an easy business, and from what I hear, you might as well become a soldier because soon enough those little brutes will be walking around all over us."
She took a private moment to seethe. This was becoming more of a rant then it was a goodbye. "And, no one thanks you either! It's a thankless, no good job that no one cares about until they've got one eye dangling from the socket, and all of a sudden they're screaming like a baby and asking for the doctor!"

Seraphina shook her head before making a sad little sigh. "But I don't want to play doctor with my friends!" She looked at her, she was a bit desperate she knew that for a fact but she didn't want to be turned down either. This was osmething that she wanted to do more than anything else in her life. She ndded to do this, she wanted to do this. But the lioness did not seem interested in her helping. She could feel herself getting a little upset but she didn't want to seem like that to the other lioness at all, she wanted to seem brave and like she was in control and she wanted to be a doctor more than anything else.
"Please Miss Ea you don't understand, I really, really want to do this, more than anything else." She looked at her moving a little closer. "I don't care if it is a thankless job I want to do it. Please." She was begging a little but she was also hoping that the lioness was getting the idea that she was very serious about it that was for sure She wasn't going to just do this for fun she honestly wanted to more then anything else.

Ea shook her head. "You say that now! Just wait until you have to deal with all the babies. People having babies all hours of the night! Or the idiot soldiers who get an injury and refuse to take a day off to rest their broken legs, and cripple themselves!" The lioness stamped her feet. "Or the fact that there's absolutely nothing to go off of, since our ancestors chose to just die off rather then study any sort of coherent healer method!"
She seethed, her tail swinging like a pendulum. "And they'll probably just starve us out anyways, the way things are going. You don't want to be around when they start picking and choosing who's important. Better you be on the right side of things, that's what I'd do!"
Ea pointed towards the door. "I don't have time for games. I do just fine without an assistant!"
"Wasn't An your assistant?" Veru remarked from the back. He appreciated the word game irony more then Ea did. "She seemed to do a good job doing things you didn't want to do."
Ea glowered. Truthfully, Ea HAD been missing An something fierce. The huria had been a big help around the wards, even if she hadn't been medically inclined. She'd ran messages and gathered various roots from outside the desert. "I don't have time to train another An," she remarked flatly.
Veru didn't have a followup argument. Either that or the poison had kicked in.
The wild eyed cat glanced back down at the cub. "Ugh," she grumbled. "Fine. If you want to help, then you can go to work now. How about that? Or is that too hard for you? Because I don't like people who don't work!"

Seraphina looked at the lioness and then shook her head, she didn't think the older lioness understood what she wanted exactly. Or really she didn't think the lioness understood how badly she wanted it. And she wanted it badly. She wanted it so badly, and the more and more she thought about it the more she wanted it. "I'm okay if I'm up all night!" She nodded her head stubbornly, she puffed out her chest trying to show more and more how much she wanted it, because she wanted it badly. "I wanna learn and I want to help." she said more stubbornly then ever, she was normally a more quiet lioness more kepeing to herself, not exactly some one stubborn and loud.
She looked up at the lioness with bright eyes. "I can be a great assistant jsut like her!" She squeaked. "I know I can do it, just give me a chance." She said not sure what else to say, if the lioness wasn't agree she wasn't sure what else she was going to do to get the lioness to agree. She had no clue what she was going to do at all. "I'll be the best assistant!" she insisted once again. She was going to get what she wanted with this she was sure of it! She listened to the other voice and had hope of what he wassaying was ture.
Her eyes dropped for a moment as she began to figure that the older lioness's words weren't going to change. However her attention was lifted at the lionesses words. "Really!?" She squeaked excitedly before nodding at the lioness. "Oh no~ It's not hard at all, my mom isn't expecting me until late. I can help with whatever you want miss!" She nodded to the lioness as she stood up loooking up at the lioness waiting for her next words.

Ea sighed, suddenly reminded that with cubs came exuberance. Why were they always so excited about everything? Ea could hardly think of a reason to be happy about tending to wounds and hearing nonstop moaning and bitching about injuries. But... she was touched by her idealism. At least, when the pride ran them out, it wouldn't be just soldiers running the place. "Alright, alright. Tone down the exuberance, or you'll make me sick."
She turned and faced the wards. "There are plenty of things you'll have to do around here if you want to be my assistant! And I'm not a nice person! That's the first thing to learn. I don't care. I just want the job done, and I want people out of here. They come in, eye comes out, they leave as soon as they are better." She dusted off her paws, and started to walk into the cave. It was notably cleaner than most other dens, dusted of sand and food debris.
"When a patient comes in, the first thing we need to do is decide if they're just trying to skip their apprentice lessons for the day. If they're lying, you ask them to leave. No loiterers. If they're pregnant, you send them home. They don't need to stay here, we'll come to them." She reported. "But if they're injured, the first thing they'll want is sharp root."
The lioness trotted over, stepping unceremoniously over Veru, and indicated the stock she had set aside. In small turtleshells, bones and other found objects, Ea had a rather neatly arranged batch of herbs. "Sharp root is found in the desert, under thick grasses. It numbs pain. It's also a pain to dig out because of all the thorns. That'll be your job. Every day we need a new supply of it, because it goes about a day after you dig it up."

She looked up at the lioness before nodding calmly, she was containing her excitement even though she wanted to run around the den screaming in joy because she got what she wanted. She was going to be a medic! She had a feeling the lioness would get upset at her the other hand if she started to do that. So she decided it would be better just to stay quiet and listen calmly to the older lioness, she knew she would get further like that.
The small lioness bounced to her paws and then looked up at the lioness as she began to follow her quickly, making sure to keep up with the older lioness and so she could listen carefully. "Yes ma'am!" She squeaked as she looked up at the lioness and then looked around trying to figure out where things were. She could see the bones and the turtle shells. It was interesting that was for sure, she had never seen anything like it but it interested her, really interested her. She knew that there was so much to learn and she knew that she could figure all of it out. She looked around as the lioness spoke and as she thought about it she never guessed that some one would skip and hide out in the medic's. And she knew that she wouldn't be able to hide out either. She thought that was a little funny.
She paused as she thought about the lioness's comment before asking a question. "Do I give them the sharp root?" She asked making sure it's something that she would need to do, because she knew that even though they wanted something didn't mean they should always be able to get it. She looked around before looking at the sharp root. She stepped around Veru before quietly commenting to him. "Excuse me." She then trotted quicker to get to Ea. "So I'm supposed to go out and get them?" She asked checking to make sure that she was getting it right. "Sounds like a plan." she commented a little more quietly as she looked at it, it sounded like an interesting plan she had to do.

"No, I'll handle that." Ea said, eyeing her own supplies. "You must be careful how much is given to a lion, and what the size of that lion is. An adult might get a full stalk, but a cub would only get the end. I use a complicated system! I'll show you when you've got bigger paws." Yes, nice dodge. Mostly Ea just liked to make things seem a bit more complicated then they were. The more mystery that was involved to her life, the less anyone would bother.
And the less likely they were to be replaced.
"Yes, you can get them. There are thick patches near here, it's hardly what I'd call a true run. Most of the herbs are collected by huria apprentices and trackers when I can get ahold of them. I've got the batch for today. But if you want to be an apprentice, I expect that batch to be replaced before you show up tomorrow," her tail swished as she looked about her domain. What else... "You can abuse Veru, he's not actually a member yet. He's caught something mysterious, but it doesn't seem to be catching. I'm figuring out the right combination of tonics to use to cure it."
"We don't have anything to go off of," she confessed. "For any sickness. It's all trial and error. But we remember what works and what doesn't. You'll have to practice your memory skills! We used to get water daily."
Ea motioned towards the all but empty basin. "Not anymore. If there was some, it would have been your job to make sure it was clean at the start of the day, and soak some of the roots." Her tail twitched. "Now I just bury them and hope no one gets poisoned."

Sera looked at the older female and nodded before thinking about it for a moment and asking another question, she didn't want to mess anything up. "Do you have any thing for me to carry the roots back with?" She questioned, she had a feeling it wasn't the best idea to stumble around the lands with them hanging out of her mouth. If the older lioness didn't have something she would have to find some one else who did. Then it was just trying to convince them to do it for her. She was hoping that no one would give her hard time about making her something or letting her borrow something. She paused for a moment and then looked over at Ea. She figured if she couldn't get some one to make her maybe Ea could get some one to make it... She snapped out of it as the lioness spoke again. Bigger paws? She glanced down at hers and frowned. She would have to get bigger sooner so she could work with the herbs! She was hoping that there was something that she could work on soon.
"So at the beginning of the day we have to soak them if there is water?" She asked just double checking again she didn't want to mess anything up that was for sure. She then tossed a glanced toward Veru thinking about what she had just said before looking back at Ea and speaking again. "Do you want me to go out now to get them or anything else?" She asked the lioness. She was ready to get to work. She was so excited and once again she really didn't want to get the older lioness mad at her, and she was ready to start working now. "Or is there anything around here to do?" She asked curiously

"Huh?" Ea blinked, turning towards the cub. Carry them with something? Her tail pulsed in thought. "There's something...somewhere..."
The medic started to rummage through her things. It became clear that the ward was perhaps desperately in need of devoting another room entirely to storage. Odd plant parts, skulls, and just about anything from the desert was cluttered around one little wall. Eventually, she recovered what looked like a sling of cloth. "You can put them in here. We soak them, but not anymore. Can't waste the water even on medicines," she chattered. Ea was the kind of lioness that enjoyed hearing herself talk. "Make sure to rotate where you pick them. The last thing we need is over using a stock. And never pick more then we can feasibly use in a day. Just as much as your paw."
She paused. "Well, as much as my paw." Her arm stretched out as if to show. "If we need more, you'll do further runs during the day. You don't need to go out now, as I've already done it. But I do have errands to do, and if you want, you can sit here and make sure Veru doesn't die."
Ea looked over at him curiously. "Trying something new this time...should be okay. Direct traffic if anyone comes in. Send injuries to the left, and sicknesses to the right. Don't send anyone in the back, that's where I live and I don't want anyone messing with my stuff."

Seraphina looked at the older lioness, did she have something around here for her to carry things? She paused for a moment as she looked at the lioness before grinning. So tehre was something in here. She watched the lioness as she started to find the cloth. "Thank you." She grabbed the pouch and looked down at it as she wiggled it around her neck. She was thinking about getting something else anyway, something that could possibly hold itself together better. she paused as she nodded to the lioness. "Okay." She said as she thought about how much to grab.
Sera's attention was then turned toward the lioness's paw and nodded. "Your paw size." She repeated to herself looking the lioness's paw over before turning around quickly toward Veru. She looked back at the lioness and nodded. "Sounds good." She said plainly before looking toward the sides of the den. "Okay I got this!" She nodded and flopped down on her haunches proudly. "I'll be here until you come back!" She stated proudly. But there was one thing for sure. She was very much hoping that the lioness was going to come back soon. She was hoping that everything was going to be okay and that no one was going to come in really sick. She paused for a moment and then looked at the lioness. "what happens if an emergency comes in?" She asked curiously wanting to make sure because the lioness left.

An emergency? Ea almost laughed. "Yell really loud. Someone will find me!" Unfortunately true. It didn't seem like any emergency escaped Ea's attention these days. No matter how intimate the getaway, there was always someone lurking around the corner to rush her back to work. Always someone poking someone and someone having babies and... her eyes rolled. At least having an assistant might make hiding easier!
"You'll be fine," the medic said casually, ignoring the fact that her little charge at literally only started ten minutes ago. "Going to check on some litters and bring back what water I can beg and claw my way to. It's quiet around now though. The real problems don't usually happen until night, or noon. Just keep an eye on Veru, and so long as he doesn't die you can consider yourself hired."
Veru grumbled something from where he lay, resting his paws on his head. Apparently whatever Ea had dosed him with was starting to kick in.
"Well, we'll see anyways." The doctor mused, before making her dramatic exit.
