Nostalgia, she supposed.
That was the reason she was wandering around in the dead of night, paws silent as they moved through the forest in half-forgotten ways that kept to the shadows, invisible to almost all. She'd given this life up long ago, content to live among the groundlings, content to a life of laziness, amusement. But she still kept fit. She was no longer young, she knew that. But if they ever needed a protector, she would be there.
Maybe that was why she was there too.
There were new arrivals - maybe she was worried.
She'd think more about it later.
For now, middle-aged or not, she was enjoying this. The strength of her limbs as she propelled herself. The way she passed other night-time creatures without their notice. As her red eyes gleamed in the dark, she grinned, invisible. Laziness was nice. But sometimes it was good to feel alive. |

Kijembe was always moving through the darkness. Maybe that was because the rumor said he brought the darkness with him. he was never without it, and his own fur had absorbed so much if it, it was hard to distinguish him from the shadows he kept to.
Some said he was a monster, created by that very darkness, but he did not think it went that far.
He did not think of it much at all, in fact.
He noticed something moving nearby and moved toward it. It was his duty to keep the area clear, as it was the only direct route to grounds that he had sworn to keep safe. Sworn to himself, maybe, but it still counted. He leaped onto a rock near the lioness, looking down at her.
He had seen her, but only by the glint of her eye. He didn't say anything, standing tall and watching her with a set, difficult to read expression. It was more blank than dangerous, but there was a heaviness to him. An edge that was threatening, regardless of what he was doing. |

The leopardess paused when the lion appeared, a sudden halt with her claws dragging into the branch, the cracking of bark breaking the silence of the night. He was better camouflaged than her, but his gaze had sent a prickle of - not fear, but something akin to it - awareness perhaps? A prickle of awareness at the back of her neck, short fur bristling. She tilted her head slightly, shaking herself from eartips to tail, fur rippling softly. She didn't say anything, content to sit on the branch and stare. If he wanted something, he would surely speak. If not, well, she could continue her midnight stroll. She was breathing heavily though - despite enjoying it she was out of shape.

Kijembe regarded the leopard curiously, tilting his head to the side at her as she stopped before him. He was sure she was an outsider, but then, he was not capable of knowing everyone within the pride and his eyes tended not to see other species save only if they were a threat.
Or food.
He heard the noises, though, and he watched her quietly for a moment as she stared back at him.
"Who are you?" he asked at length. His voice was rough, but not because he meant for it to sound as intimidating as it did. Rather, he was just unused to speaking too much, and certainly not for extended periods. He was a quiet guy, to say the least.
In his business, there was not much need for talking.
"What are you doing?" |
