He was supposed to be out looking for water but had ended up getting distracted by the whirling path of a lone eagle. It swept in lazy loops above his head, crying out in earnest. Yet, despite its calls, Nur'yu could see no other with it. The sky was empty save the dark curves of its wings and with no trees to offer respite, the lion figured it wouldn't find another; not here, anyway.
Perhaps it was lost...
Actually, come to think of it...maybe he was a little lost, too.
Blinking, he came to a halt and glanced all around him. He'd gotten turned in circles following the bird of prey and now he wasn't quite sure which way went home and which went further into the desert. Hmm... Squinting against the desert sun he tried to pinpoint something that might look familiar, but he was no tracker. The dunes all looked very much alike and that patch of cacti over there did nothing to help him. He couldn't even remember if he'd passed them by!
Trying not to panic, he padded across the hot sand towards the surprisingly green cacti and sat amongst them. Apparently the plants held water so that probably meant someone would come by at some point and he could subtly follow them home without anyone ever knowing the predicament he'd gotten himself into. Excellent, excellent plan indeed! His teacher would have been proud--probably...

Mpeko was out to get away, padding through hidden trails and nice caves to enjoy the desert. The drought wasn't kind, naturally, and she knew there was no water, but some routes she liked were cool and soothing. Plus there was a cactus she considered taking down to lap at the moist interior.
Her reaction seeing anyone ahead was surprise, and she approached with curiousity, nose twitching before she smiled softly, nodding her head.
"Hullo there! Are you lost?"

Ah ha! Excellent! Nur'yu's plan had worked and he hadn't even been sitting around waiting for that long. Immediately he bounced back onto his paws and moved across to meet her. The sand sank beneath his weight, leaving deep and perfect imprints in his wake. He paused to look back at them, amazed at how quickly the wind started filling them in again.
Trackers in the desert sure had to be quick if they wanted to find anyone!
With that random observation complete, he turned back to look at the approaching female. Did he know her? Hmm maybe not. But no time like the present! "Just a little!" He replied at last, bounding across to meet her in a rather enthusiastic fashion. "I was following this eagle, you see, and it decided to lead me in circles. I got turned around so much I couldn't quite remember how to get back. Luckily, I found the cacti and then so did you!" He beamed at her. "I'm Nur'yu by the way. Resident Watcher at your service." He raised a paw to his chest and grinned over at her. "I don't think we've met before?"

Mpeko smiled. Oh, he was a nice one! Very unlike some and she bowed politely.
"Mpeko. I can help you back, as a tracker, if you like." She smiled gently, trying to appear as helpful and friendly as possible. No sense making an enemy.

"Ooooo, you're a tracker?" He seemed mightily impressed with this, his eyes growing large. "That'd be great if you could...although, were you out here tracking something? Maybe I can help!" He tilted his head questioningly and then glanced about somewhat idly.
"Tracking water, maybe? I've heard there's not been much luck on that front. My aunt Fia has been grumbling about all the effort she's been putting in and the lack of results." He sighed, ears falling back into his mane. "Can't say I disagree with her...I haven't seen anything out here, either, and with no rain clouds in the sky...the situation isn't promising to fix itself any time soon."
He brushed off the thought with a wave of a paw. "But never mind about that. I'm not one to dwell on problems. Being grumpy isn't much fun, is it?"

"Being frumpy doesn't do any good!" Mpeko nodded. "But I do like to take walks. It's refreshing to clear my mind. I keep my eyes open for water but I didn't find any yet." She nodded.
"I do track though. I like to help others."

Nur'yu shot the female a wide grin. She seemed cheerful and friendly, which was nice, seeing as a lot of his relatives were not very cheery - or maybe they just weren't when he was around...which was a somewhat disturbing thought. He was a cheery, playful guy. What was there not to like about him?
"Any favourite walks you have? I'd like to get a bit more of an idea about the surrounding territory. I won't be a nuisance, I promise!"
He bounded over to stand next to her, buzzing with a childlike excitement.

Mpeko beamed. Company!
"Plenty! You can walk on my rounds with me if you like-- It's normally not active, but you never know!" She grinned. She liked him! He was nice and friendly, a welcome change that kept her beaming.

"That sounds like great fun! I can keep a look out and make sure I learn something." He skipped ahead a little before slowing to walk alongside her. "I think if I wasn't a Watcher, I might have liked to have been a Tracker. You get to see lots of things. It's really exciting. Much better than being a soldier and having to train all the time. I like walking and the odd play-fight is okay, but I wouldn't want to have to train as hard as they do."
He kicked a loose clod of sand aside and watched it disintegrate from the contact. "I guess you haven't seen any signs of those monster lions, yet? The ones they say come from the north?"

"I couldn't be a soldier. We should get on better with others." Mpeko chuckled as she walked, smiling at his antics.
"I myself haven't, no." She shook her head. "It's scary, thinking about it."

He grinned, bobbing his head in agreement. A solder's life had to be one of the most boring ones there were. Okay, so it brought pride and honour, but it also brought weariness and huuuuge responsibility.
"It is a bit scary. I hope they're just...you know...exaggerated rumours. Sometimes rogues like to do that, I think, and we're Firekin, after all. We know things about battling. There's no way any monsters could do us any harm." He paused, thinking. "Is there?"

"I don't think so." Mpeko looked thoughtful, then beamed.
"But then that implicates something IS stronger, by using the term monster. So no, probably not. We're safe, I think." She smiled at him warmly.

He seemed content with that response and with a short purr, he trotted ahead, thinking of all the stories that could be told about monsters and how little truth they could have. He tipped his head in her direction and, with the sun on his back, felt safe for knowing that there was never a Firekin too far away. Such as Mpeko finding him now and helping him home.
"Then I'm glad. I don't much want to fight anyone and we're doing no one any harm from being all the way out here in the desert."
He glanced at her with a small smile. "We should just focus on the drought for now. One problem at a time. It's easier that way." Although a drought was probably far more dangerous than any monsters that might have been lurking out there.
"Thank you, Mpeko. For helping me back home. Maybe one day I can return the favour."
