WEATHER: Dry and overwhelmingly hot. The sun is beating down, with no clouds in sight to ease the heat.
LOCATION: A barren area towards the outskirts of the pride. There are hardly any distractions in the area, aside from a large boulder and the skeleton of a once great tree.

----

Mimo stood tall in the center of the large boulder she had been using as a vantage point. For the most part, she couldn't see anything. Not that it was difficult to see, just that simply put there was nothing to see. Not a single movement, just the emptiness that remained of the once great land she had and still did call home.

She sighed heavily, through her panting and hung her head low. She had been sent on this mission in order to find and detain those responsible for taking one of their own. But more important than the mission itself, was the reason she was so determined to complete it. For some time the lioness had been debating her spot amongst the pride. Not sure whether she truly belonged with such a maternal group, when she herself wasn't very female friendly. Then like a sign from the gods this mission had fallen in her lap, and she had taken the bull by the horns and accepted it. Determined to prove not only to herself but to everyone in the pride that this was her place.

So far, her luck in this mission wasn't going so well, and she was discouraged by the idea that defeat really might be her only option..

BUT - just as she was about to step down off the boulder and admit defeat; it caught her eye. A small movement in the blind spot of her vision, if not for sheer luck alone she quite possibly wouldn't have seen it. But she had, and upon a clearer more direct gaze she realized it was him.

Immediately her need for speed kicked into gear, but she forced herself to hold back the urge until she had safely climbed down from the rock. THEN she darted off at full speed, her fur bristling and her teeth bared as she closed the vicinity between herself and the hyena she had been searching for.

Makani had seen the lioness long before she had seen him, his dark coat with dappled leg markings gave him just the right about of covering in the dried ravines that had once been the rivers that had flown through this lush land they had all called home.

He held in the sigh when he realized the she wasn't going to see him unless he mad some kind of move, but since suicide was not on his agenda today, he made sure it was a movement that carried him up some convenient rock formations that bordered an abandoned termite mound he had already prepared for a hasty retreat some hours before.

See the things about termite mounds is that they were hollow, and being hollow you could dig a nice little escape slide right out the back end of it. Makani had been tracking this lioness for a night and day now, and had picked his time as about good s he could. Now it was up to his quick tongue and her brains. Gods above let them have both.

As she charged up, he held up a paw, ears down, head down in submission, " Peace sister, I am not the one you seek for your lost child, but I know who has taken her, and last I left them, the child was still alive."

As Mimo skidded to halt in front of her target, dust clouds forms around her, though she quickly shook her eyes free of the nuisance and devoted her full attention to inspecting her enemy. Or rather, supposed enemy. From such close quarters, he looked harmless and defenseless. His submissive nature, naturally did nothing to prove her instincts wrong. But, she wasn't going to do anything silly either, she would keep her wits about her and stay on level with the hyena. If anything were to happen, it would be his move first.

But instead he spoke quickly with a tone that bore no indications of ill intent.

Mimo tilted her head in confusion at the twist her mission had taken. But still held her composure, and her stance, refusing to let her guard down. Listening intently to his final words, Mimo stood speechless for a few moments unsure of exactly what would be best to say.

"I mean no harm upon you just yet, brother."

A small pause lingered in the air as Mimo thought over her next question.

But I feel compelled to ask just how it is that I can trust any words you speak?

Do you have proof of what I seek or merely empty words?"

Makani inclined his head to her, showing that were he in her position he too would not trust such simple words, no matter how prettily spoken. " I am merely reaching behind my haunch sister lion to retrieve the proof of live you speak of for the cub...Bane, was it?

One paw scooted forward the scalped edge of the young cub's tail tuff, skin and all. While not a devastating wound, and one that would heal with time and care, it would remain one that the cub would carry forever. The blood showed it happened no more then a few hours ago, for it had just clotted on the skin.

" One of my own, an Alaka took your cub without my knowledge, nor my approval. She has always brought such trouble to my small pack and I fear has murdered my second in command. I can lead you to where I last left them, with the command to await my return. I do not know if she obey the order, but her scent shall be there and I will help you hunt her down. I taught her most of the tricks she knows for remaining hidden of your kind. Will you Pride accept my help and rid us both of this danger to my Pack and your Pride.?"

The Hyena's look coupled with his oddly coincidental evidence did enough to tip the scales out of the hyena's favor. Already, Mimo was skeptical, but now, well now things were far too strange to ignore. But she waited tensely for him to retrieve his proof, her mind rapidly going over all of the different things he could come back with.

What she hadn't expected was the gruesome bit he came back with. A shudder ran down her spine, and her heart fell in her chest. The cub was injured, but still - by logic and claim - alive. But then, this could be any cub's tuff, how could she be sure ...

Well there was one way, but she had to admit, she wasn't very fond of it. But then again, she was a lion! Was sniffing freshly scalped flesh really all that bad? Technically no, but she wasn't really feeling like being all that technical.

Inclining her head further towards the waiting Hyena, and listening as he explained his story, Mimo took a large sniff of the tuff. It was his, most definitely, and by note of the drying blood, coupled with the fresh metallic smell, it was current.

"If I am to believe that any of your story is true, you will have to fill in the holes, you left in your story."

Mimo began to pace, as the situation ran through her head. Never in her mind had such a decision been left solely to her. In the pride, a consensus of everyone's decisions were taken, but nothing at all like this. The weight of her pride rest on her shoulders, and it was a heavy one.

"For instance, why did she take our cub? Why if she has caused you so much, do you continue to allow her presence? And lastly if you come seeking our assistance, why do you blackmail us, and injure on of our own? That tuff you have there, does not look all that bad, but the wound it left in it's place... Is it much better?

Mimo paused in her circling, running over scenarios in her head. She could simply overpower this hyena, take him captor and demand his compliance... No, she wasn't like that. Never in her life had she been the violent type - even shying away from hunts as a child - Why on earth would she start now?

No, reasoning in this case, she hoped was the right way to go.

The hyena laughed bitterly, odd concentrating how a hyena laughed," To annoy me my Sister Lioness and to bring this little problem firmly into my lap. She has a habit of trying to make me fight her, which will not happen. I have responsibilities to her mate, or at least I did. Till he went missing weeks ago.'

His look became unfriendly, dangerous, the hardness in his jewel colored eyes glittering, making him go from friendly ally to heartless killer, "I only allowed her for the sake of To'hla," here his voice dropped, showing the loss of his friend he believed to be firmly on her shoulders, Makni bared his teeth.

" It is not blackmail Sister Lion, it is revenge, for you and Baneful and To'hla and I. I am not so prideful to say I can take her on and save your cub who is an innocent pawn in her game, and I may be a hyena, but I do not hurt innocents. There is honor among even thieves as you call us, and your cub has nothing to do with Alkala 's schemes. As to her wound, you needed prof of life, it was the least damage I could do with out bringing you an ear or an eye. This wound will heal, scar yes, but will not maim her for life."
