Starts: November 1st OPEN!
Ends: November 15th
Welcome! This is a contest to win a lovely cub from the Bonelands pride. Her mother participated in a pride wide period of rogue swap, which means they'll never know their father, nor will Dina tell them much about him other than he was a rogue. Please feel free to get familiar with the pride and its beliefs, as the cubs will be raised to be members of its ranks and subjected to its rules. Below are some links to threads of interest that should be kept in mind.

[The Family]

User Image Dina- She is their mother, but being a part of the Bonelands means that these cubs will be looked after by the entirety of the pride's females, and she accepts this wholeheartedly. As a member of the pride, she values a good, working relationship with her pride sisters despite having different opinions, and isn't easily shaken by harsh commentary. This is due to the fact that Dina believes she is almost always right, and that its her duty to lecture someone over their mistaken ideas or habits. That being said, she also worrisome, and this may also spur her into giving advice if she feels it may help. Their living conditions are difficult, and so she's taken up the position of Cinga, which means she'll be away for a good portions of the day to scout the territory with her vulture partner Bora.

As a mother, Dina already has some experience with her first daughter Mimo sinu, who is fully grown now and independent of her care. With these new cubs, Dina will remain adamant that they adhere to the pride's practices, one of which being the importance of the Abaholi (the male leaders of the pride) as they protect the pride from outside threats and should deserve the cubs utmost respect. She'll also let it be known that not doing so in certain matters will get them punished. Their world is harsh, and despite how much affection Dina shows them, she will not sugar-coat their reality.

Bora- A female vulture that's chosen to live along side the pride as Dina's personal partner; for a fee of course. As long as the lioness watches her back while she feeds, the vulture is happy to scout from the safety of the skies.

Chazama- Translates to 'no try' in Zulu. She's the first born of the litter, and so far has been very unwilling to do anything she doesn't like right away.

[The Contest Cub]
User Image
Prompt: Dina has always been openly affectionate and kind to you and your sister, even at her strictest when she teaches you the ways and rules of the pride. Despite being with her cubs for most of the day, Dina is away for a few hours of most afternoons with that loud-mouthed vulture, and she's told you you're not allowed to come along until you're older. Most times an assortment of lionesses is around to watch you and the other cubs as a group, but today there happens to be only one. Do you want to sneak off to find your mother? And if so, why? Or are you content to stay and play with your sister and the other cubs of the pride? Also, how does your mother's work/absence make you feel?

Name: Tokelo
Meaning: right, privilege, prerogative, duty in Sesotho
Personality: Tokelo strives to make her mother proud. She wants nothing more than to do what is expected of her and make her mother, and her Pride proud of her. She follows instruction almost always and respects her mother and her mothers wishes. She is submissive in this way, but that does not mean she lets others walk all over her. She will stand up for what is right and is always eager to learn the Pridal customs and way of her family.
Prompt Response:

Curiosity burned at the cub as she watched her mother head out with that vulture as she always did about this time. Blue eyes stayed glued to the disappearing tan figure before finally the young one turned to look at her caretaker and the other cubs. A sense of rebellion tried to rise in her as a little voice tried to appeal to Toke. 'There's only one watcher today. With so many cubs it would be easy to sneak away and spy on momma.' A part of her conscious thought.

Chazama was off already playing with the other cubs as Toke pondered and struggled to decide if she would abide by her mothers wishes or let curiosity get the better of her. Closing her eyes the tan cub with blue eyes slowly padded towards the rest of the cubs, watching them as she sat. Occasionally her eyes would flicker to the seemingly overwhelmed Lioness stuck watching all the cubs by herself. It was hard to say no to an opportunity to follow momma and see what she did everyday. Toke wanted so badly to know, to see what she was doing, and to know if Toke would be expected to do similar duties later on.

Eventually the seemingly grumpy cub padded towards the Lioness and gently pawed at a leg. "I have a question, when my momma goes out with that vulture, what does she do exactly?" Toke had finally decided on a compromise. She would stay, but pester this lioness and any others from then on where her mother went everyday until one told her. Today was not the day she would get the answer though, the lioness simply told Toke to go play with the other cubs and that she would find out one day.

Toke considered trying to sneak off then, but every time she thought about it or began to walk away from the other cubs, the Lioness would lock her eyes onto the blue eyed cub and give her a look that warned her against sneaking off. One day Tokelo would find out... But not today.

Name: Khethukuthula or 'Kit' for short. (I guess Khet to be pronounced as Kit.)
Meaning: Choose to be quiet in Zulu.
Personality: Quite/Attentive/Dutiful/Serious.
Kit isn't mute though those who don't know her well enough would be forgiven for thinking so. Kit only ever speaks if she feels a need to point something out to another, she is more of an observationist and married with that is her attentive ear to pay attention to every word spoken in ear shot. Having a mother like Dina has also impregnated her with a purposeful sense of duty within the pride from an early age. Kit has a very black and white outlook on life, of right and wrong and she finds the more grey matters in life hard to categorise and if the matter comes up where she must act she'll simply weight up the pro's and con's and take the 'right' decision, though maybe deep within her heart she knows it's not right, not really.
Prompt Response:
Kit watched her mother turn and leave as per usual, nothing any more different than any other day and she didn't feel any different to any other day. Kit sat on the out rim of the imagined perimeter of the area where the lioness watching over them allowed them to roam, it wasn't that Kit liked to push boundaries it was simply it was furtherest from the others. She enjoyed the peace, she liked simply sitting and passing time and the other cubs often seemed unsettled when she was about. They teased her and her sister, 'no try' was the perfect name for Chazama, she was reluctant to do anything but at least she spoke, Kit was willing to do things but she simply didn't wish to speak to anyone. She loved her sister however, she understood her, Chazama would often speak for her and she would return the favour by first testing the water, so to speak, she'd be the first one to play a new game, the first one run out and greet mother on her return, to walk up to a unknown member of the pride and when it was okay Chazama would follow. Chazama was the best lion to read her eyes, her body language, that's how she knew to say the right things for Kit.

Chazama was back closer to the gathering of other cubs and the carer. Kit watched her mother disappear and then simply sat and watched the landscape. Their mother would lecture them no end on correct behaviour, of right and wrong, of respect and doing ones duty. Kit didn't resent the drilling, she took it all in her stride, she felt it was preparing herself for later in life so she could serve the pride as her mother did. She respected her mother and wanted to grow into a lioness that would make her proud. She was dragged from her revere when she heard the two or three of the other cubs calling out, 'Chazama is a scaredy cat!' they chanted and Kit felt the hair on the back of her neck bristle. She turned to see the three teasing her twin at the bottom of a large rock, looking up, on top of the rock stood Chazama staring with wide eyes at the ground below. Kit walked smoothly over to the base of the rock stared down the three bullies who stopped for a breath until Kit turned her back and walked behind the rock before starting up again though a little softer this time. Kit scrambled up the rock face and came to stand next to her sister. 'Oh, Kit, I don't wanna jump, I don't like this game any more, can't I just climb back down the other side.' Kit looked at her sister in the eye, there was a steeliness present but also a softer undertone the she hoped would reassure her sister that it was okay. Kit jumped from the rock and landed on the ground below, causing the three taunters to have to jump back suddenly in surprise. Chazama followed her and then shook herself out, 'that's not so bad, in fact that's fun!' She looked at her sister and nuzzled Kit fondly before proclaiming to the cubs she had been playing with, 'Lets go again.' and ran off behind the rock. Kit said nothing but stared hard at her sisters playmates and then walked off to sit in peace again and await her mother.

Name: Sekai
Meaning: "Be Humorous" in Shona
Personality: Sekai is a very serious individual. She strives to be a strong willed female just like her Mother. She's dedicated, and attempts to be just as brave, though she really isn't. Sometimes, Sekai may not agree with her Mother on some things, but she still respects her words, and tends to take charge for her Mother in her absence, or even when her Mother is around! She's a backseat driver of sorts. Watching her sister closely, and beats her to the punch if she does anything wrong. When it comes to her older sister Mimo, Sekai is very disapproving, and has watched her Mother closely when it comes to visiting with Mimo. She latched on rather quickly to her Mom's nagging, and noticed at an early age how much Mimo disliked it. So naturally, she does everything in her power to annoy her older sister at any given chance by running back to Mommy. Sekai is a quick learner, and also absorbs a lot of the behaviors she finds in her pride. Specifically those she is closest to, or has recent interaction with. As a young cub, her sister Mimo hung around a lot, so she picked up quickly on her sister's fear of heights. And also picked up on some of her bad habits. Though she quickly puts herself in check when it comes to those.
Prompt Response: Sekai smiled with pride as she sat down upon a rock, watching her Mother disappear into the distance with her vulture companion. She did this every time her Mother was sent away, watching her disappear, and then fantasizing about the awesome things she could be doing. Surely it was something only she could do, and that is why she was away so frequently. Of course, her absence didn't bother her much, she was proud of her Mother. One day hoping to be just like her. One day she would catch a vulture of her own, and become just as big, strong, and dedicated as she was. But in the meantime, she was more than fine being looked over by the other females. Watching from atop her rock as the others played, and prepared to pounce down at any given moment and begin tattle telling. All for the good of the pride of course! Tattle telling, was just her way of helping the next generation grow up to be better than the last, something she thought was a necessary step.

As her Mother disappeared from her sight, a slight frown fell over Sekai's face. But it quickly vanished as she caught site of two cubs, rough housing just along the usual baby sitters boundaries. Perking to attention, the cub pulled herself to her feet, and dashed off the immediate direction of the only baby sitter on duty. As she caught up to her, she was out of breath, something that frustrated her greatly. How could she EVER be the best her pride had to offer, if she couldn't even handle a simple dash?! Panting heavily, the cub nipped the edge of the female's tail and tugged until she got her attention.

"The boys are rough housing again, and they're almost out of the boundary line!"

Sekai stood tall and proud at her accomplishment and awaited the older females response.

With a sigh, the older female rolled her eyes a bit and replied. "Thank you Sekai, but i'm sure they'll be fine." This comment angered the female and she growled in disappointment, "But they're outside the boundaries! What good is setting a boundary if we don't enforce it? The worry in the cub's voice was quite sincere, and as usual the older female picked up on it. 'Alrght Sekai, you win this round. Let's go." She huffed slightly, and picked the cub up by her neck fur, heading in the direction, Sekai quickly pointed out with her paw.

Name:  Kurjuzi
Meaning:  Curious
Personality:  Kurjuzi is a very curious cub that tends to wander off and ask a lot of questions. She enjoys playing around with her sister and the other cubs of the pack but that doesn't change the fact that she will try to sneak off at every chance possible nor does it change the fact that due to her being horrible at sneaking she ends up getting caught and getting in trouble for it, not that she minds that just means she has to try harder.
Prompt Response:

Kurjuzi looked around her while playing with her sister in the dirt pouncing in her befre backing up and let out a playful growl. There was the opening she was looking for the older women were busy looking at another group of cubs so she took off hoping to find where her mother went off to every evening this time. The curiosity she was named for was eating her up inside as she ran through the area. “This is it! I will find out today!” She let out in a yell before stopping clamping her mouth shut having forgotten that she was supposed to be quite.

Hearing footsteps behind her she turned not at all surprised to see one of the women looking down at her sternly. “I just wanted to go see what Mama was doing...” Kujuzi said with a grumble, as she was picked up and carried to the rest of the women for her punishment. “I know... I have to stay here and wait for Mama... I won't run off again...” Her ear's and tail flicked slightly as she whispered to herself. “Until tomorrow that is...”

The other women around the little cub just chuckled used to this by now and knowing that the cub never managed to make it very far before giving herself away. “You know we will always catch you.” Kujuzi's head tilted to the side slightly at this comment from one of the women. “So will you tell me today why Mama has to leave all the time or do you have another story to tell me?”

Name: Funani
Meaning: What is her intention (zulu)
Personality: Unlike her twin Chazama, Funani will often be seen doing something new and interesting - things that even the adults will question. She will be curious enough to inspect much of the world around her, sniffing some patches of grass here, and another patch in another location, and then trying to slice it up into portions with her tiny claws just to see what happens. From this, the adults will wonder what her intentions are in doing these strange activities; but it is simply a result of her inquisitive and bold nature to test her world. She'll be the one who tries to get Chazama to accompany her on her schemes, wanting to open the world of possibilities to her twin, but will probably fail and shrug it off.
Prompt Response:
Another afternoon, another vision of mom's back with the white Bora floating behind her. Funani always wondered where mother went with Bora, talking the day away - that couldn't have been the only thing the two were doing, because they could have just done it here, in front of them!

Funani waited patiently for her mother to signal the other lionesses to come - one had been there already, and was gently cleaning her paws from a meal she had earlier on in the day. Chazama was sitting nearby, awaiting the other lionesses as well, and the other cubs were just starting to nap. But then... a few minutes passed, and it seemed that there was only going to be one elder this day to watch over them. Had time passed enough that their mother thought the group could finally take care of themselves, or just required less eyes and attention?

She ran around a small rock that sat nearby, wondering what to do with herself. This action caught the elder lioness's attention whose head quickly turned back as soon as it saw Funani - no doubt the adult figured it was another one of Funani's odd mannerisms that shouldn't elicit further questioning.

"Hey Chazama," Funani called in a soft voice as she stopped her tracks to step over and lower herself to her twin, "Wanna go follow mom?"

Chazama had answered with a no - she didn't feel like getting up to run somewhere right now, and rather rest with the other cubs. Funani huffed, dismayed that no one wanted to do anything different at all with the lack of adults around! Maybe she just had to go do it herself. Chazama would miss everything, and then she'd get to gloat afterwards about what she saw that Chazama would never get to see!

In one quick motion, Funani was away from the adult's peripheral vision and climbed into the tall grasses, following her mother's trail. However...

"Oh!" she exclaimed, seeing a series of pebbles off to the side.

She got distracted, honestly, sauntering over to them. Ahh, they were all round and the perfect size for her paws... Slowly, she took them and started aligning them in an orderly row, observing them with each placement to see if she configured them with justice. These were the little things that Funani enjoyed in her young, curious, and innocent life. It was, after all, one of the only things she could do to find fulfill her desires for entertainment and whimsical fancies.

Okay! This took a lot of time and consideration on my part, because you guys made it very difficult to pick between all the entries. After a good deal of thought I decided to go with junglerunner! Congratulations! I'll get them posted in the certing thread momentarily.

If this contest has taught me anything, it’s that I need to set aside more cubs to give away for these things. xD; Thank you everyone for your entries, they were amazing!
