and episode 172 in the anime....i think 39 of those are "filler" episodes, or episodes that are not in the manga, but were made because the anime was covering a little over what each part of the manga was covering so they were fast approaching a point where they would converge. the manga then took 3 year jump and skipped strait to the point where sasuke is being taken over by ochimaru as well as some other crap that happens but i ahve not been reading the manga so i dont really know . the anime is showing some of the events that happens during these 3 years to show how some of the various ninja have been improving themselve as well as to add a bit more buffer between where the anime is and where the manga is.

@Owenlars2: OMG DOES IT SHOW TEAM 10?! xD Chouji and Shikamaru learn a lot. Ino grows like 2 feet. (or at least she looks HUGE! xD) And Chouji changes DRAMATICALLY in looks, technique, and control. Oooh! Oooh! And Hinata grows her hair out... *blush blush* heart

the filler anime doesnt make any sense if you think because in the manga, jiraya and naruto left the village immediatly after naruto healed to train him! they didnt go on anymore missions

The anime is based on the Manga. Its why they're on filler episodes now .The anime caught up with the manga, so the anime is just making stuff up until there is enough manga to continute the anime.
The manga came first, there are near 300 manga chapters, and about 170 anime episodes. There are nine english translated manga volumes right now; the 10th will come out in june.
