Pingana didn't necessarily care for having free time but it was something that was, for the most part, unavoidable. He could only work so much before he found himself sitting around the center of the pride, boredly watching the goings-on around him. At least this was sort of a part of his real job, keeping an eye on things around the pride.. one of the more common ones, too, when things were so quiet. But it wasn't very interesting, certainly not as interesting as acting as a regular scout.

So far he'd only been sitting around for a few minutes but already he was thinking about other activities that might fill his time. He needed friends but he wasn't cheerful enough for that, it seemed, because he couldn't name any scouts or guards that would go out of their way to interact with him outside of work.

Hmmm.

Jani had slipped out of the den, stealthily past not only Mommy but Mother as well, and the cub was highly pleased with her accomplishment. The Goddess knew Amani had tried something similar and failed. Horribly. She didn't know if Nyesha had tried, but really, it didn't matter in the end.

What mattered was that Jani was out exploring the pride! And the first thing she found today was a big, very big black and white lion. The cub came up to him and stopped, looking up up up.

"Wow," she breathed. "You're big."

Of all the things going on around him, a single cub wandering around on her own stood out most- if only because it seemed odd nobody at all was around with her. But they were still well within the pride, it wasn't worth worrying about. Then, of course, she came right up to him, making a spectacle of looking way up at him.

So he looked down at her.

"Maybe," he said, almost smiling, "Maybe you're small."

Jani paused to consider this. It made a lot of sense. She was about the same size as her brother and sister, yes, but they were much smaller than Mommy and Mother. So, it was reasonable that she was small, instead of him being big.

"Okay," she agreed. "But I won't always be small!" she told him. "One day I'll be big, like Mother and Mommy!"

She wasn't really sure what she wanted to do when she was big though. She knew that Mommy was a Bard. It sounded a little tame as compared to Mother being a Warrior, but she wasn't sure she wanted to do that either. But the cub didn't have to make up her mind now. She had a lot of time before she was big enough that she had to know.

.. Mother and Mommy? The thought distracted him briefly and it took him a moment to piece it together. He didn't see much of the ranks outside the guards and scouts but he knew who she was talking about, now he thought about it.

"You're right," he agreed finally, "You probably aren't as small as you used to be, either."

She didn't look very old but she didn't look very young, either.

Jani considered that too. She didn't have too much to compare how big or small she'd been before as opposed to now, but it struck her that he was probably right.

"I guess that's true. But I don't remember that much," she admitted to the big lion. Actually, she wasn't really interested in how big she'd been or how big she was now. How big she would be was fairly interesting, but not relevant at the moment.

"I'm Jani," she said, remembering that she was supposed to introduce herself to people she'd never met before. "What's your name?"

"Pleased to meet you, Jani," he said, also remembering his manners now that she had been polite enough to introduce herself, "My name is Pingana."

He was starting to feel awkward looking down at her as he was but he didn't care to put himself nearer to the ground to make conversation easier yet, he didn't have enough experience with cubs to judge just how interested Jani was in sticking around chatting with him. Cubs seemed mainly unpredictable.

"Do your mothers know you're out here by yourself?"

Pingana. It was a different sort of name. Not a bad one though, Jani decided. She wasn't sure that it fit him. But it wasn't her place to say that, she supposed. He could pick whatever name he wanted, so he probably liked that one a lot.

The cub was diverted from that line of thought by Pingana's question. She averted her eyes and looked from side to side. "Mother probably does by now," she answered, avoiding the actual question. Mother had a habit of finding them whenever they managed to sneak out of the den and she was the one who spanked them when they were brought back.

But getting out in the first place was more than worth a spanking or two.

When she looked around them suspiciously, he couldn't help but chuckle. She wasn't the most discreet creature but it sounded like she had been stealthy enough to sneak away unnoticed, even if it wasn't to remani that way. He could appreciate that.

"What happens if she finds you out here?" he asked, "It might be worth practicing sneaking back home unnoticed."

Blue eyes blinked as the cub considered that. She hadn't given any thought to sneaking back into the den - getting out had been the big priority. But Jani supposed there was no reason why she shouldn't do such a thing - it might even save her a spanking!

"You know," she said, "that's really smart." The more she thought about it, the more right he seemed. "Thanks a lot Pingana!"

With that, the green and white cub snuck off, hoping to get back into the den before Mother or Mommy knew she'd been gone at all.

Sneaking in unnoticed could be harder than sneaking out, especially in this case, he thought, where she was already supposed to be at home. But he watched her go, wondering if she would manage to pull it off or if she was going to get into any trouble.

At least he'd sent her homeward, he couldn't get into any trouble encouraging sneaky cubs to go home.

But that was about as exciting as he could expect it to get around here, he figured, so he got up and walked off to find something to do.
