History of Magic
Professor Grayson Powell

Tuesday 9:00am to 9:45am
(Updated on Mondays)

Grayson Powell had his feet propped up on his desk as he was seated reading yet another book. Next to his desk was a globe the size of a stove, while a stone tablet covered with hieroglyphics sat on the other side. A list of rules and expectations was listed on the chalkboard behind him, and two bookcases sat on either side of it brimming with books. He seemed totally engrossed with what he was reading, and didn't seem to notice any students filing in.

Grayson was quiet as the class filed in. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't paying too much attention as he was currently engrossed in the book he was reading. It wasn't until an odd squeak from one of the chairs that he looked up, a bit of astonishment flashing across his face as he realized that the class had arrived. Blinking, he stood, feeing a bit flustered. Hopefully no one would notice, or the class would never take him seriously.

"Hello class, and welcome to History of Magic. I am your new professor, Grayson Powell. Today, I figured we could review what was learned in the last class as a refresher for those that may need it. After all, an entire summer has passed, which means you might have had time to forget some of what you may have learned. Please answer one at a time and cover one topic each. That way, hopefully everyone will get a chance to answer and participate."

Jessica Sassareth

Slytherin, Fourth Year

User Image When Jessica entered the History classroom, she noted that she was the first student to enter; however, the professor's face seemed to be too engrossed in a book to even notice. Blinking in surprise, Jess simply took a seat, as the rest of the class filed in.

It seemed like an agonizing time before the professor realized that the class was waiting on him! Jess began to scribe notes as the Professor began the 'refresher'.

Ronyo Storm - Slytherin
Fourth Year
History of Magic IV

The last few History of Magic classes had seemed almost non-existent in their studies and lectures. Some interesting information had been given out but it had been text book and easily found through any source of books or scrolls. That or by just asking Phi and getting a much more stylized telling of some of the various histories.

With a new teacher thing might prove to be more fascinating and maybe even more exciting given the right subjects and discussions. The professor seemed amusing enough with his head stuck in a book while class should have already started. Ronyo flashed a sidelong glance towards Phi knowing the two would likely find much in common. In that since Ronyo also felt he would find the professor enjoyable with his thirst for knowledge also something high on Ronyo's wish list.

With parchment and personal notebook both out Ronyo began scribbling down the notes and the extra bits in his own journal that might add some since of importance or understanding down the line. So far the class was more lively than the past few and Ronyo was actually needing to write a few things down instead of read them word for word from the book.

William Dante Nott the Third

Fourth Year, Slytherin

To say that disappointment had shown in his eyes would be daring the moon to twinkle its brightest during the eclipse—of course, the moon still shone just as he was still disappointed, but it would never be easily readable upon his features. He slithered within as a caustic enigma to the rest of them. There was a hidden malice in his shadows, a poison on his lips, and the devil behind his fingertips. Most everyone would claim that he took after his father, in looks, but his spirit and demeanor matched none other than his Uncle Remington, whom, is notoriously known throughout the district of Knockturn Alley and wherever their whispers arise.

William sat, dignified and poised. Instinctively, he began to flip open his text and diverge into the monotonous word of history. But, that was before he realized there was a new professor, and that was when his disappointment began. After all, he had often enjoyed the simplicity of the class—where nothing was done except to read. His eyes of gold danced about, prattled from head to the next as he waited and observed, expecting someone to raise their hand, but when none had, Tay spoke. He never rose his hand, and he never waited to be called upon, with a lulling silence like this, he didn’t think he’d have too. ”Last year we discussed the muggle witch burnings. The Salem Witch Trials began near the end of the 1600’s, and there were only eleven reports of muggles being burned. Some witches and wizards, like Wendelin the Weird, took pleasure in it. They would cast the flame freezing charm on the fire, and pretend to burn and scream at the stake. It’s said that Wendelin allowed himself to be caught at least fifty times.”

Colton simply rolled his eyes at the sight of the new professor. He hated this class as it was (what kind of wizard didn't know about their own history), and having a new teacher usually meant a hefty review of what he had already known before ever even coming to Hogwarts.

His assumptions proved correct as he seated himself quietly among his friends, and Professor Powell asked each student to participate in the review only shortly after introducing himself.

Reluctantly--and without raising his hand--he waited for Tay to wrap up his dull lecture before speaking up.
"We also learned that Nicolas Flamel was an alchemist, but better known as a really, really old guy who got to be that way by using his invention of the Sorcerer's--or Philosopher's--stone to create the Elixir of Life." Colton's deep, uninterested voice cut-off as soon as he had explained himself in as few word as possible, not bothering to sound even a tad bit scholarly in his explanation.

With a yawn, he looked expectantly at the next student who would undoubtedly go into a boring lull about Newt Scamander.

Grayson walked into the classroom, ready for another day of class to start. Taking a piece of chalk, he quickly wrote on the board. He then turned to face the class.

Professor Powell
Ancient Egypt and Greece

"Today, we're going to be examining the ancient cultures of Greece and Egypt, and how they used magic. Specifically, we're going to be focusing on several points in ancient history to really get a feel for how they must have interacted with not only the world, but also with Muggles.

"In truth, ancient wizards and witches worked together with muggles, and muggles didn't fear them. Wizards were held in high esteem in that time period, and evidence can be found throughout the ancient world of interaction between the two groups. This particular piece,"
he said, gesturing to the stone tablet that was displayed, "is actually a replica of another tablet that had to be removed from a dig site, as it clearly demonstrated several instances of real magic being performed, such as the curse that was placed on the tomb that this tablet came from.

"There were several notable wizards and witches during this time. Circe was a Greek witch that specialized in transfiguration, and was well-known both in the wizarding world as well as in the muggle community for turning sailors into pigs. There was another named Andros the Invincible, who was well-known for producing a patronus the size of a giant, for which he gained his title. There was also Mopsus, who was a Seer and defeated his rival in a competition of their powers.

"Most wizards and witches worked with muggles on numerous occasions. In Egypt, you can see the evidence for it in the tombs of rulers, as evidence of skeletons warped by magic have survived. These individuals probably ran across the curses ancient wizards placed to protect such sights from graverobbers."

Grayson looked around the room, studying each student before continuing. "Please feel free to ask any questions, or to make any comments. While I know that everyone here might not be interested, at least some of you might be."

((OOC: I apologize for not getting this up sooner. I had internet issues that only got resolved yesterday, so I can post without losing what I worked on.))

When Colton entered the classroom, his face void of all emotion, he caught the word Egypt on the board out of the corner of his eye and his stomach suddenly dropped, painting his face with irrational fear. Glancing around and finding nothing, he looked closer at the board, and, in context, the word he had read was nothing out of the ordinary. And why should it be?

He took the same seat he had occupied during their last lesson, but his attention was much more present today. He wasn't necessarily interested in the lesson--although he very much would have been had he been him usual self--but the lesson itself had inspire other thoughts...thoughts that kept his posture straight and his hands gripping the edge of his desk tightly. He could feel the excitement of the Egyptian spirit inside him, and he could sense his thoughts as his mind trailed off to the extravagant throne room and the other ancient scenes Roi had been shown.

Was it that bad? Being possessed--was it so bad that a single word reminded him of Roi and he nearly had a heart attack at the sight of it?

"Yes..." Colton groaned under his breath as he took out his notebook and pretended to take notes as Professor Powell began his lecture.

Yes, yes it was.

Now where did I put that wand?

Grayson walked into the classroom with a bit of a hop in his step. He was definitely getting used to teaching, and save for the occasional hiccup, the job was going fairly well. He picked up a piece of chalk and quickly wrote the topic of the day on the board before turning to look at the rest of the class.

Professor Powell
Herpo the Foul

"Hello class. Today we're going to be talking about Herpo the Foul. A most interesting fellow, i'm sure, especially since there's not much on him besides his accomplishments, which leads to speculation as to what else he may have done in his lifetime."

"Herpo the Foul was an Ancient Greek Dark Wizard. He is one of the earliest known Dark Wizards and his work is still a lasting aspect of dark magic to date. He is best known as the first wizard to hatch a Basilisk. He is reputed to have invented many vile curses and was also the first wizard known to successfully create a Horcrux, perhaps having designed the ritual himself. Accordingly, he must have committed murder to split his soul. He is one of the earliest known Parselmouths.

"Now know that's not much to go on about him, but it is interesting to note that as one of the earliest known Dark Wizards, he has attributes today can be reflected as pertaining to dark magic. His abilities as a parselmouth is a good example, as well as the fact he is the originator of the basilisk. Both are traits that seem to be common with Dark Wizards and Witches today. If this conjecture were to hold true, that would suggest that all Parselmouths would be involved in the Dark Arts, which isn't necessarily true. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask, though in this case, there is one that I will not answer, since even I don't know the answer to that."

Jessica Sassareth

Slytherin, Fourth Year

User Image Jessica listened to Professor Powell's lecture with a bit of concern -- especially because of her own family blood. A pale hand raised to be acknowledged by the History Instructor. Once Powell pointed at her to be heard, the Slytherin redhead asked her question, "If Herpo the Foul created the basilisk, did he also create other creatures of Greek legends -- like the chimera, minotaur... and gorgons?"

Quietly, Colton wandered to his desk, his eyes on the floor and his mind elsewhere. It had appeared that Phinelia and his two bestfriends had yet to arrive, so he saved each of them a seat and laid his head against his desk.

The Gryffindor was surprised to hear Professor Powell's voice call the class to attention--it appeared that had fallen asleep. What with all the things going on lately, he wouldn't put it past himself.

Straightening his posture and taking out his notebook, he took half a page of notes, finding it hard to hold on to his consciousness. When Jessica asked about the making of the other creatures, his focus returned to him, and he swiveled towards the professor to hear his response.

Only the smallest portion of his attention held ironclad, catching the bare gist of the days lesson concerning the ancient Greek wizard, Herpo the Foul. He had read his books sufficiently enough to allow his mind to wander out past the depth of the castle stone structure and formidable high wall. His mind whirled, it had been, too long, he realized, since his last encounter with the ancient demon spirit and it was starting to draw pools of iron curiosity on his tongue. The school had fallen into a lock down just earlier in the week, and, the rumors still shook viciously and without fault.

He managed to scribble down his notes for the day in silence.

Now where did I put that wand?

Grayson, unlike last year, was actually prepared to lecture when the students entered the classroom. He was seated behind his desk, but as people filed in, he stood and walked in front of it to stand before them all. He waited until the last of the students found their seats before speaking.

"Hello class, and welcome back to History of Magic. Today, I figured we could review what was learned in the last class as a refresher for those that may need it. "Hello Professor Powell," he said as he walked into the classroom and sat down in an empty seat. There was not as many people there, but he figured he should answer the question, knowing that he would get on the Professor's good side.

"We went over the famous Alchemist Nicolas Flamel, who had been able to create the Philospher's stone, the stone that could grant ever lasting life, which was highly coveted by many, including the dark wizard Voldemort. It was hidden in the mirror of Erised I believe. Mirror of something?" he said, contributing to the lesson. He wondered if he was right. He was a little rusty in the History department.
