"We meet again." Varali said with a raised eyebrow as she looked at her tail that appeared to be taunting her with it's uncontrollable whipping around. Yes, this small cub had yet to tame her tail. In fact it often looked like her tail was trying to tame her. Varali while gentle and naive was still young and had a bit of resilience in her from her parents. She batted at her tail as she fumbled around on the ground near the hammocks. Her mother was busy bathing her siblings for the first time that day and her father was out doing warrior things. What that entailed she didn't know.

Finally the small cub gave up as once more her tail claimed victory over her. She was breathing a little hard and looked a bit deterred. However, the fire within her still burned brightly. Oh the joys of youth and their quick recovery. She grinned at her tail and marked it with her eyes. This battle would continue again later. Her tail seemed to agree as it curled up on her back. Now as she looked around she wondered what it was she wanted to do. Varali hadn't thought through very well what her plan was for the day. Then again things usually tended to sneak up on her.

Oh, something – or someone, more precisely - was sneaking up on Varali indeed! A pale blue cub was slowly moving closer to the spotted girl and she looked like a miniature huntress stalking her prey. Only, of course, Hewne was still far too young to hunt anything larger than a butterfly and when she grew older hunting her own family members would probably be frowned upon anyway.

With a quick little wiggle of her stripped behind and a little smirk as she watched the other cub finally give into the naughty tail, Hewne sprung forward and landed right next to her cousin.

“I seeee you!” she cried out excitedly, in a sing song voice that sounded like a clear invitation to play.

Flying above the cub in circles, a small blue bird looked down on the young lioness he was escorting and shook his head before landing on a nearby branch. She was definitely her parents’ cub, that one. She seemed to have completely forgotten about him, the little fur ball!

“Hey Cloudhead’s girl, slow down.” He told the cub, knowing she disliked being addressed in such a way. Secretly, Sipho was actually quite fond of the little cubs that Sata often asked him to look after, a fact that he “cleverly” hid by teasing the little ones almost as much as he did their father.

Varali froze as her eyes grew to the size of soft balls when her cousin landed next to her. Her heart pounded in her chest even though her eyes had went back down to a normal size. Slowly the cub turned her head to look at her cousin. "I see you." Varali gulped, giving Hewne'stxeli a puppy dog look. "What are you doing?" Varali asked before she smiled and nuzzled Hewne's neck while purring rather loudly.

Then her attention was pulled up to the sky. Cloudhead's girl? Who was cloud head? She didn't remember hearing from her mother that there was such a lion in the pride called 'Cloudhead'. Apparently her apple fell from her uncles tree's rather then her father's. Once more Varali looked at her cousin and this time asked. "Who is Cloudhead?" Varali asked as she tilted her head far over to the right, almost loosing her balance.

Hewne giggled excitedly, pleased that her little play had managed to get such a reaction from her cousin but she sobered up surprisingly quickly.

“I’m sorry, did I scare you too much?” She returned the little nuzzle before looking up with a dramatic frown. “Don’t call me that! I keep telling you not to call me that!” she looked down at the other and chuckled. “That’s Sipho, my dad’s bird. And that’s what he calls daddy. Because of his mane, you know. It’s stupid.” Her eyes clearly betrayed her feigned indignation, showing that the cub was at he very least a little amused.

“I was going to sneak out…” she said in a playful whisper. “… but daddy sent him after me.”

-------

Sipho turned his head to blatantly ignore the cubs below, pretending they weren’t talking to or about him. Teasing the little ones was almost as fun as teasing their father, after all. But when Hewne whispered, he dropped down to the ground in an instant.

“I can still hear you, silly girl. Your father snuck away all the time when he was your age. It won’t be easy for you.” He tilted his head as he looked at the other cub who reminded him of Sata’s white daughter in some ways. “Hello, Spotty. I’m just here to make sure she doesn’t get eaten by a snake.”

"Just a little but I'm alright." Varali said with a reassuring smile. Then her attention once more returned to the bird as she tilted her head back to look at it. "That doesn't sound like a very nice thing to call uncle." She stated before she dropped her head to look at her amused cousin. So she was intending to sneak out? That seemed a little dangerous but also a little fun too. Varali usually wasn't a trouble maker but a little excitement didn't necessarily hurt if it was done every once in a while. Her mother would probably commend her for being a little bit more adventurous, though only after she had told her how silly she had been. Yes, her mother was an odd one sometimes. Varali definitely seemed to take after father's side more then her mother's side.

When Sipho flew down to where they were she bashfully smiled and fluttered her eyelashes. She had never talked to a bird before. Or had one talk to her. "Hello." Varali said as her tail moved to curl around her front leg on it's own. "My name is Varali. I'm Silron'zem's daughter." Varali informed the bird with a smile. Most probably wouldn't guess who her parents were as she lacked stripes and in fact had a ton of spots. Her coloring also seemed to be different from them as well. But she had her fathers hair and white paws. So maybe she could blend in a little. She and her siblings seemed to take on a unique coloring of their parents. Something that both surprised and overjoyed Vinata. Then again, they were her first litter of cubs. Everything about them made the young mother happy and enthused.

“Daddy doesn’t mind.” Hewne said with a cheerful string of chuckles, offering her cousin a playful bow. “Sipho gives nicknames to everyone. And it was momma’s bird that called him that first.” Though it was true that Sata’s companion seemed to always have a nickname for everyone, not all of his targets seemed to appreciate his choices. Watching her cousin carefully, the striped cub realized she seemed to be rather interested in the blue bird. She supposed she shouldn’t find that so surprising considering that most cubs did not grow up with a pair of birds in their hammocks.

“Sipho is my dad’s bird but mom’s bid also lives with us. She’s called Pikelis. She’s really nice, too.” She looked to the side wand winked at Sipho with a knowing smirk. It was always interesting to watch the two snarky birds interact and anyone with eyes could tell that Sipho had a huge crush on the female bird.

------

Sipho’s head tilted again, showing his mild confusion. He’d actually expected the cub to reject to being called “Spotty” but he was pleasantly surprised by her reaction. He did his very best to ignore every mention of Pikelis, knowing the striped girl was trying to tease him and instead watched the other cub with obvious interest.

“You look like Hewne’s sister.” he finally said, bright green eyes watching the cub with a strange intensity. He glanced over at Hewne before continuing. “Doesn’t she? She has the same face markings and blue eyes. She even has a few spots here and there. It’s good that you look a little different than the rest… all the lions look the same in this pride.” Sipho huffed and then fluffed up into a feathery ball, glad that his feline companion was a little easier to differentiate than most.
