User ImageApparently word of his behavior at Ru's sending-off had reached some higher-ups in the pride and displeased them. The result being that Galning now had to spend the least comfortable and convenient times on sentry duty and patrol "until Ru's band returned."

To be honest, Galning wasn't all that proud of his behavior that night, but after more than a week of waking a little before midnight so that he could stay awake until a few hours before dawn and then try to go back to sleep, he was beginning to look a little rough around the edges and his twitchy berserk side was never too far off.

When it became apparent that Ru's viking was not going to be quickly over Galning had reluctantly asked his brother Timorien to look after his son, Yollalunta, It wasn't fair to the cub to have to deal with Galning when he was like this. It was a startlingly mature solution, coming from Galning, unfortunately he was taking his son's absence as license to imbibe and generally behave like a fool.

This was the third night in a row Galning had shown up for patrol duty intoxicated.

User ImageGrowing up in the old pride was great. Everyone expected him to leave eventually, and thus, no one actually expected him to do anything. Siki had ridden that gravy train for as long as possible, while little by little his brothers and cousins grew up and started to spend more time on their own.

And then one day, Siki woke up and realized that his brothers and cousins were gone.

He waited for a week. Two weeks.

And finally, reluctantly, Siki set out on their trail.

Following sight and rumor of his family, Siki had been through some perilous and bizarre places and run across some freakish prides. There had been that pride full of murderous females ... and now this pride, which seemed full of murderous males. After spotting a few of their warriors out terrorizing the countryside, Siki had elected to wait for nightfall to approach.

He approached now, creeping along as low to the ground as possible. His white pelt was too conspicuous for him to move freely. There was an odd smell about ... a fermented, alcoholic smell. And something else. Siki wrinkled his nose.

"Brown Nose?"

Galning couldn't smell much beyond the miasma that was his own drunken stench, and so he was taken completely by surprise when (as far as he was concerned) a voice came out of nowhere and said Brown Nose.

"...the ******** his most articulate utterance, but Galning was practically weaving as he walked, so the fact that he spoke clearly should have been kind of impressive. Galning knew approximately how drunk he was, and so he was really, really hoping that he was hallucinating.

But no. The gods were not so kind. Around the next bend was Siki. Definitely not Timmo. Definitely Siki. Tricky Siki. Icky Siki.

"You're trespassing," he informed his brother. "If you don't turn around and make tracks, I'm authorized to slit you from nuts to nose."

Yep, it was definitely his brother.

Siki rose from his crouch. It was difficult to see the dark lion in the night, but Isti's white mane shone like a torch. Face to face with his brother, he now realized that Isti didn't just smell. He reeked. It was a wonder the dark lion was even standing up right.

Siki rolled his eyes at Isti's threat. He had never taken his brother very seriously, and he wasn't about to now. Certainly not with Isti hammered. "Well, well. I go to the ends of the earth to find you, and you're still an embarrassment. Congratulations."

It was sad, really. After all the ground Isti had covered, and all of the strange things he must have seen, he was still a loser.

"You're really stupid most of the time. Did you know that?" Galning told Siki. "Things are different now. I am a warrior in a pride of warriors, and if I decide that you're trespassing I really am allowed to kill you."

The effect he was aiming for was spoiled completely by a resounding belch that hit at least six different vowel sounds before concluding. Galning wrinkled up his nose: his mouth tasted disgusting and the air around his head suddenly smelled like a rhinoceros's bottom after three days of explosive diarrhea. At least that was how he felt about it.

"And why would you be looking for me anyway? It's not like we were ever friends." And then Galning realized what was really going on. "Ohhh. You want to join the Stormborn because you couldn't cut it outside of the pride. Well, if you want to join the Stormborn, you have to defeat one of their warriors in a challenge."

So there.

Siki knew he was in a strange land, on the borders of a strange territory. He didn't know anything about the pride that called these parts home other than that it contained a fair amount of very large and very ferocious-looking lions. Ordinarily he would have avoided the pride by a wide margin.

However, the pride also contained Isti, so he was having a hard time maintaining his fear and respect for these "Stormborn".

Siki curled his lip, fighting the urge to take a step back at Isti's revolting belch. The air around Isti was decidedly ... pungent. Siki wondered briefly what Mother would have thought about Isti's current state, and decided it was very much for the best that Isti had run so far before turning into such a mess. The white lion opened his mouth to say that he never wanted to join the Stormborn -- but then he realized something.

"One of their warriors, huh?" Siki asked, an evil light in his eyes. He took a step towards Isti, bracing himself against the gusts of foul air that might emanate from any of Isti's orifices at any moment. "I'm guessing you're one of their warriors?" He darted out a paw to swat Isti on the nose. It might or might not come away covered in vomit, but it would teach Isti a lesson!

"I just said so. Weren't you listening," Galning replied, utterly exasperated. He knew he wasn't the brightest lion in the world, but it worried him that he was definitely the brightest lion in his family. At least in his generation. Yolla and his cousins might be more intelligent.

Fortunately for Siki, Galning wasn't a barfing drunk most of the time. He belched and farted and passed out, but if he was vomiting there was probably something more sinister at work than poor choices involving fermented fruit or mint. So the swat toward his nose was not met with puke.

"Are you challenging me, Siki? Are you sure this is what you want? Because this isn't a game. Once you're in, you'll be expected to uphold the pride's ideals and be a lion that brings the pride honor. Braaaaap! Can you do that? I don't think you can. Even if you win. Which you won't."

The belch was an unfortunate punctuation mark, but he felt he had made his point nevertheless. Ah, the self-assurance of the drunk.

Siki was getting fed up of Isti's mouthiness. He was especially tired of the way Isti kept burping. Siki was in the line of fire, and he wasn't happy with the stinking air that kept gusting into his face.

"Sure, fine, I'm challenging you," Siki said irritably. The white lion really didn't give a s**t about these Stormborn and their challenges or whatever Isti was blethering about. He just wanted to find his family -- Asper, Atheris, Timmo and Amarali, at least. The worthwhile ones. He hadn't come here to pick a fight with Isti, but if his brother didn't stop burping in his face then Isti was going to get his a** handed to him.

Feeling fairly unenthusiastic about the whole thing, Siki charged at Isti without another word. He turned slightly, throwing his weight into his shoulder. Hopefully he would be able to knock the drunk down and be done with this foolishness!

"Hahahaha - oof!"

That was about how Galning's reponse to Siki's challenge went. Lots of derisive laughter and then the sound of him being knocked onto his a**. At least his tail wasn't hurting anymore. It had been giving him problems for a week or two not so long ago, but now he was more or less in the peak of health. Minus the whole inebriated-almost-beyond-the-ability-to-stand-up thing.

On his rump Galning stayed for several moments, watching bleary-eyed as his brother did whatever he was doing before springing back to his feet and beginning to dance and wiggle around. He was convinced that he was being evasive, although in actuality he was just making a complete fool out of himself. Dimly in the back of his mind he recognized that there was a problem with his current strategy, but most of his mind thought it was a great idea.

"Not gonna do that again! Nope nope nope."

Isti was down, but he wasn't out. Siki hoped the black lion would have the sense to just call it quits, but unfortunately the drunken fool bounced back up. Siki sighed.

"Come on, Isti, will you just..." The words died in his mouth when he saw what Isti was doing. His brother was ... dancing? Dodging? Siki's brow furrowed. He had always known that his brother was an idiot, but he had never seen Isti make a fool of himself in such a spectacular fashion before.

Unable to contain his laughter at Isti's erratic wiggling motions, Siki made a half-hearted charge at him. Still sputtering laughter, he tried to knock Isti down again. If he put Isti down enough times, maybe the idiot would finally stop this nonsense.

Floating like a moth and getting ready to sting like a hornet, Galning felt good. He'd been knocked down, but he'd gotten right back up on the zebra. Nothing to be afraid of here. This was just Icki Siki.

Except things just weren't gong his way at all. Icki was cheating, clearly, because there was no way on earth that Galning would be reeling backward again while Icki laughed and jumped at him. Galning was a Stormborn reaver, fearsome and strong.

Galning staggered and stumbled backward, tripping over his own paws and tail until he fell down hard, his head striking something even thicker and more unyielding than his skull was and momentarily robbing him of sight, hearing, and all those other senses people usually have when they're conscious.

Somehow, despite Isti's ludicrous bobbing and weaving, Siki managed to strike him down again. He stood over his fallen brother, frowning fiercely and ready to take action if Isti popped up again! This challenge was beyond foolish, and Siki was ready for it to end. He just wanted to know the whereabouts of the rest of the family, he didn't want to beat up his touched brother to join his club.

Minutes passed, and Isti didn't move.

"Oh great. I've killed him," Siki muttered to himself, staring down at the lumpen shape of his fallen brother. Alarm rose in him, dissipating as soon as he realized that Isti was still emitting his various drunken stenches. In a lively manner. So Isti was alive, then. Should he seek out some kind of healer? Surely this pride of Isti's had healers?

"The fuuu...?"

Galning groaned and grumbled and rolled onto his side, shaking his white mane vigorously. It did nothing to clear his head, and in fact made everything worse.

He had lost. His opponent had knocked him out. Siki had knocked him out and had him completely at his mercy for the gods only knew how long. There did not seem to be any way in which things could have gone more wrong.

"P'raps this is the gods' way've saying the whole fam'ly should be t'gether," he muttered to himself. "'Cept the girls, 'parently."

He got to his feet but his head continued to hang by the ground. The effort of lifting it with all that heavy mane was too much for him to bear. Not to mention the shame of losing to his brother. Again. He should have just let the jerk in as he had done with Timmo.

"Well. Come on then," he growled at Siki and began to traipse toward the stronghold. His path was meandering and his gait ungainly, but he managed not to stumble at least.
