Jyotika lingered near the border of the West house, and in turn, the edge of the lands that Tianxia claimed. There was less competition for gathering supplies here, and though she should have brought a guard with her, she felt it was easier to maneuver around by herself. The terrain here was not entirely encouraging, as she knew being an ex-rogue herself.
"Hmm, hmm~ ♪♫" The red lioness hummed to herself as she gathered up berries, twigs, and other odds and ends, slipping them into a very sad looking pouch. It wasn't a pretty thing, but it got the job done with minimal amount of loss. One day the lioness would figure out how to fix the holes in it.
"Just need a few more red berries....perfect to stain with!" She loved to try and stain different types of rocks and leaves, and berries always seemed to work better than say, mud. Mud turned into dirt when it dried, and fell off.

Susurro had left his preferred range in the deep desert and come here, to a much more fertile and bountiful land. He hadn't been chased off, but there were far too many aggressive lions wandering around. They tended towards distinctive colorations, which made them easier to avoid after identification at a distance, but he couldn't be awake and wary at all hours of the day and night. He was, after all, just a lone leopard. So he was in a wildly different place now and, oh lovely, there was a lioness. Who, if not the same shade of red as the aggressive one he'd encountered up close, was still red. All over. He almost diverted his path to avoid her. Almost. This lioness seemed to be engaged in gathering. Picking up items from the ground, growing things off of bushes, and generally being peaceful about it. So he kept on straight at her, the direction he'd been going when he first spotted her. Of course she was standing where his path led. So the purple leopard came to a halt a few lengths away from her. Silently. Watching. Just because she didn't look angry or aggressive didn't mean he actually wanted to talk. But he wasn't going to ask her to move out of his way. It was remotely possible that she might take the subtle hint and move. It was more likely, based on past experience, that she'd start talking at him. How bad that was remained to be seen.

She kept picking at little bundles of berries, slipping them into her pouch. As she moved, a couple slipped out of her pouch, bouncing on the ground and becoming forgotten. The red lioness knew that she wouldn't return home with as many as she had picked, but they wouldn't be wasted. At least they'd return to the earth and feed other plants. Or birds would eat them. Or something like that.
It was then that she glanced around, finally noticing the leopard just staring at her. She froze for a moment, but knew that it was useless. She was bright red, for goodness sake.
Now she was regretting not bringing a guard. The leopard didn't look terribly thrilled, otherwise why would it just be staring?
"C-can I help you?" she asked, wondering if he was here on pridal business.

Now that was a good question. Could this red lioness possibly help him? Susurro had never considered the possibility. He could, at this juncture, ask her to move out of his way in order to continue on his way. But, she seemed shy enough, nonaggressive and nonthreatening. He could live with that. "Perhaps," the leopard answered shortly. Purple eyes took in the scene. The lioness had been gathering her bits and twigs and rocks, seemingly heedless of how some fell out of the bag with every movement. Both the occupation and the carelessness were strange to him. "What is the purpose of that?" Susurro asked at last, lifting one paw in a gesture towards the bag. He might as well ask, since she was being so polite. No need not to satisfy his curiosity in this situation. He didn't feel as if lingering here, talking to her, would put himself (or her) in any danger, and he did have a sense of those sorts of things.

Jyotika was a little confused, until she recognized the fact that he was probably a complete stranger, and had no idea of the Tianxia pride that resided here. It made sense - almost no one did until they stumbled into the lands. The west house had made an alliance with a pride, but she didn't know how much of that information was shared.
"Oh! I'm gathering supplies to create art later," she said with a bob of her head. "This is the edge of the pride, so there's more to find here than closer to the center of it." There, then he'd at least be aware that there was a pride, even if she was the only one nearby at the moment. "I'm an artisan."

The leopard listened patiently to the lioness' answer, though his brow was furrowed in thought. "Art." It was a word he had at least heard before, but the concept was abstract at best. Susurro was, however, surprised to hear that this lioness was a member of a pride, and these were the borderlands. He had thought that his gods-bestowed gifts would alert him to such a presence. Apparently not. A good thing to note down for future wanderings.
Still, he was here now and the lioness seemed perfectly willing to answer his questions. So he might as well stay and talk a bit, and fill in some of the gaps of his knowledge.
"Art. Artisan. It makes sense," he replied. "But what exactly do you create?"

Jyotika hadn't know that much about art until she had come here. There weren't that many out there that did art for its own sake. It just...was. Here, it was a commodity, something that she traded for food and protection. She wasn't the best artisan in the West, but it kept her happy, full, and she slept well at night.
"I prefer to stain whatever I can," she said, slipping a paw into her back, jostling it around. A few things felt out from one of the holes on the bottom. Perfect. She rolled a little rock over, and some berries. Red, thankfully, so her own stained paw wouldn't stick out too much before she washed it.
"Like this," she said, squashing some of the berries on the rock. The juice oozed over the stone, changing its colour as some of it soaked in. "Its not as fancy just doing that, sometimes I mix the berry juices up to give it a different look."
Her tail swished behind her, a smile on her face. "I stain other things, like vines, feathers...whatever holds the colour."

Susurro watched the lioness' actions intently. He had never ever seen someone create art, and it surprised him that it should be so simple as crushing berries onto a rock. It was strange. He felt more confused now that he had had this demonstration than he had been before!
"But what is the purpose of this? What would you do with a colored rock?" the leopard pressed her. He had asked the questions to satisfy his curiosity. He couldn't simply leave now until he had a full understanding of art and its purpose in the world. Or at least, its purpose in the world of this particular pride. Whose name he didn't even know, but really, Susurro didn't tend to care about mundane things such as that.

The lioness was amused that she was giving a lesson of sorts, but it reminded her of how she learned how to do this, and how it would help her.
"Honestly, there are different ranks in the pride. And different jobs. I barter pretty things that I make for food and protection. Usually I try to make trinkets that some of the members can wear, but once in a while I try new things to see if anyone wants them. It keeps me alive, and that's part of the mystery."
She hoped that she was helping him understand, at least in a way that might make more sense for a rogue. Life was hard being on your own, and she had barely survived it herself.

The leopard frowned as the lioness tried to explain to him. He understood about survival, and even had a rudimentary concept of bartering items for food and protection. But he didn't quite see how art fit into that.
"But why does this art have a value? What purpose does it serve, that you can trade it for food and safety?" Susurro asked at last, once he was certain of what he did and didn't understand from the lesson thus far.

Jyotika shrugged. "Its merely the desire to have it." She herself didn't wear anything but the poorly crafted bag around her neck. "You're a rogue, right? Sometimes you see someone wearing something...its sort of like that. Bragging rights. To look more attractive with it. Something along those lines."
The lioness laughed after her statements. "Well, that's the best I can figure out. I enjoy playing with these things, so it works for me."
Sometimes she wished her children had followed her path, but they themselves had a hard life. At least they seemed to move past the fact they were bastards. Jyotika herself had such a stigma attached to her she never dared to court anyone. Having a fling with a prince of the Central house had been a very large mistake.
"But...I like it. I like it better than the rogue life I once had."

It didn't make sense to Susurro. He had only rarely seen creatures with adornments, and like as not they were more practical than anything else, such as this lioness' bag which contained her...supplies.
He wasn't even certain how she could enjoy something so seemingly pointless and useless, but he'd had thoughts like that before about other creatures.
"I can't argue with personal preference," the leopard replied at last. "But it seems a waste of time and effort to no purpose in my eyes."

Jyotika shrugged. She tried to explain it, but he wasn't able to wrap his head around it. She had no other explanation for it, and so she decided that she wasn't going to really try anymore. At least he had been nice about it, as confused as he was.
"Its part of our pridal culture. Speaking of which, you should be ok if you linger around here, but you shouldn't go too far in that direction," she said, pointing to her left. "There are some guards that attack first and ask questions later....if you're still alive." She shook a bit at that comment, remembering Akasha's attack on her when she had no idea where she was. In the end it turned out ok, but Jyotika did her best to avoid the vicious royal guard's gaze.

Susurro blinked at the warning. It was good to know what direction the pride was, though he'd had no intention of straying anywhere near it. So the warning about the guards was somewhat unnecessary. Still, it was a courtesy that she had done him. So perhaps he could do one for her...
"I appreciate the information," the leopard replied. "You are kind, and the world will reward you with kindness. You simply have to be patient and not give up on it."
It hadn't been a clear vision, thank the gods, but he'd gotten enough out of it to know this lioness would be rewarded in a fashion she deserved. Now it seemed to the leopard that he'd fulfilled his purpose in this place, and he began moving, avoiding not only the direction he'd come from, but the pride as well.

It was something that Jyotika hadn't been expecting...was he a seer? There was a fair number of seers within the west house, and so hearing something a bit cryptic like that wasn't completely out of the ordinary. She just had not been expecting it from a stranger.
"Well...thank you," she said, nodding to him as he began to move on. "I appreciate it." She wasn't sure what else to say, and he seemed content to move on. She bowed down to gather up her spilled supplies, not wanting to return home with so few items left in her pouch. She had work to do!
