Furaha had been meeting with Ndale for some time now - she'd lost track of exactly how many days, but it was enough time that the matchmakers had started giggling and whispering when she walked by. Stupid gossips, didn't they have anything better to do with their time? The dark-furred lioness huffed and flopped down on top of her favorite rock, turning her gaze to the sky with a frown. Now that she thought about it, she was supposed to meet Ndale today, too...

But it was just for business! A professional relationship, no matter what those chatty biddies thought. Furaha wasn't in the market for a mate, not in the love-you-forever sense of the word. Such things didn't exist, an she wasn't about to trust her heart to another, not when her own father had ripped it out and stomped on it barely after she was old enough to leave the den!

Though... Ndale was at least honest about his own disinterest. That was something she hadn't seen in any other males. So if she had no choice but to pick a male to be an 'official' mate, for whatever reason.... Ndale might be okay. Might be. Maybe. ... Wait wait wait wait a minute!

What was she thinking?!? She wasn't a lovestruck fool, going to make an exception against all she stood for just for one male with beautiful bitter mistmatched eyes and a similar depressing outlook that made her just want to love him anyway seek out the company of one of the most obnoxious optimists in the pride just for a break!

No.

No.

This was a business arrangement to get the matchmakers off of their backs.

Nothing more.

Ndale picked his way over to their familiar meeting place. The large guard ached everywhere and had a couple particularly rough evenings, but, he wasn't about to cancel his meeting with Furaha. While he kept in mind what Mittere had said about listening to ones body, of making sure you knew your limits, Ndale had too much pride.

At least when it came to his arrangement with Furaha.

It wasn't that he looked forward to seeing her, of course not, but they had agreed to a perfect plan. To keep the matchmakers off of their back, they would have cubs, but without the commitment of some sort of relationship or lovey-dovey mate ceremony. This was a matter of duty, and also a matter of pride.

So it was, the lion refused to miss meeting up with her, no matter how he might feel. It surprised him how much he actually wanted to have cubs with the dark coated lioness. He assumed it was instinct demanding he produce spawn, but a very small part of him was pleased that Furaha was the female who would soon be the mother to his cubs. She was strong, down-to-earth, and though she had some . . . issues. . . she was far from a fool.

If he let himself look weak in front of her, though, he did wonder if she might reconsider. She was immune. He was diseased. There was a possibility, if she found him weak, she might decide to look elsewhere. And that . . .bothered him. Granted, he was certain it was purely his pride talking, which was a bit foolish, but . . . best to play it cautiously.

Besides, he wasn't that sick. Just . . unwell this week.

Slowly picking his way over to where they met, Ndale picked up his pace and puffed out his chest a bit, ignoring the complaints in his joints and aching muscles. The fever he felt could be disregarded for now. "Furaha." He greeted cordially as he came in to view, giving a small nod at the lioness that was perched upon her favored rock.

Furaha spotted Ndale as her approached, and as soon as he was close enough for a greeting, she jumped down from her lounging rock and padded over to him. She deliberately slowed her steps, however, so as not to seem overeager. That simply wouldn't do for a business meeting such as this - she had to maintain a certain level of dignity and distance at all times. Especially because she was dealing with a male.

"Ndale," she answered quietly, and offered him a polite smile. He looked a bit ill to her critical eye, but that was unsurprising given the fact that he was diseased. If he didn't wish to acknowledge his condition for the time being, then neither would she. At least he wasn't making a production out of it like her mother did!

Stepping closer, she took a seat before him - a silent invitation for him to sit, as well. "How have your duties been? Interesting at all or simply a typical day?" This was neutral ground, safe conversational territory. Nothing so dangerous as getting into a discussion of disease or - worse - of feelings. Still, whether or not she acknowledges it, she couldn't help but feel a bit of concern - he was clearly not feeling well, and the light in those gorgeous unusual intense, dual-color eyes seemed dimmed.

Some part of her wanted to nuzzle him and rest with him, keeping him company while he gathered his strength back a bit. Furaha promptly stomped on that part of her and told it to shut up. The dark lioness was going to deny its existence forever and it might as well give up on trying to make her feel things that she didn't want to feel. This was a business arrangement, a deal to get the matchmakers off of their backs - not a mushy, cuddly relationship with ~love~ and ~adoration~ involved!

Ndale watched as the lioness pushed herself from her rock and trotted over. They had come to a point where they were no longer strangers, and it wasn't entirely awkward to hold some sort of conversation with her. She really wasn't bad company at all, considering the circumstances. She was proud, independent, strong-willed, and not particularly needy or clingy. It was a refreshing change, and something he was glad to have found.

Honestly, the were almost a perfect match, at least when it came to business. If he had to pick anyone in the pride tom other his cubs, she was certainly at the top of his list. Still, just because he was growing comfortable around her, it did not mean that he was going to draw down his defenses right away. There was still much they didn't know about one another, but . . . that was all right. She didn't ask, he didn't pry -- it worked.

As the lioness settled herself, Ndale did the same. His joints ached, and he generally felt miserable, but he wasn't about to let on to his weaknesses. Not in front of her, at any rate. He was diseased, but that didn't mean he had to look like he was on death row. Hardly. "The lands have been quiet." He grunted, his tail giving a slight flick. "Which is well enough. I haven't the patience to deal with ignorant strangers and lostlings this day." It was the truth -- his sickness was causing him to feel rather miserable, and in turn, short of temper.

"What of you? Has your day been well?" He questioned quietly, canting his head lightly as he inquired.

Furaha was aware of Ndale's attempts to downplay his condition - at least on some level - but she didn't feel that it was worth making a fuss over or even bringing up. After all, he clearly wasn't dying yet, so there was nothing to worry about for now. Disease was just a fact of life, after all, and not something to get worked up over.

In fact, she found it rather enthralling that he endured his illness so well. Gods knew her mother didn't, using it as an excuse to win just a little more time with Jozo. What Gerda saw in that idiot, Furaha would never know - and she never wanted to know, either, because if she was to be attracted to any male, it would be to one as different from Jozo as was possible.

... Wait.

When had she decided that being attracted at all was okay?

Furaha nearly grumbled out loud at that thought, but at last shook her head and put it aside. There were more important things to see to right now. "Well, yes, but quiet. Game was a bit difficult to find at times, but I managed it eventually," she said, twitching her tail idly. She thought for a moment, and then added, "It has been quiet for some time now - were I the nervous type I'd almost say it was too quiet." Not that she was the type to shriek and jump at shadows that existed only in the mind. Some creatures, however...
