User ImageHe couldn't hide out in his father's den forever, Yolla concluded after about an hour of sniffling, sobbing, and generally behaving like a flowery-blooded outlander. His dad would be embarrassed if he came back to the den and found his son in this state, and Yolla would be even more so. It was definitely time to get out of the den.

There weren't that many other places Yolla felt he could go without running into the lions who had so recently witnessed his humiliation at the paws of some creepy white cub, but Yolla didn't plan to wander the pride at random. He knew where he was going to go. He would visit his cousins. Maybe between them he and Nits and Resi could think of a way to get back at the ghosty git.

He took the journey at a very brisk trot that was almost a lope, trying to make it the short distance to his cousin-things' den without anyone seeing him.

Quote:
User ImageNits had somewhat designated himself as Resi's bodyguard. It felt pretty nice to have that sort of role in life. It wasn't that he was big or hulking, really, it was just that he had a really mean stare. At least, he'd been told it was mean. Sometimes he practiced it at the lake so that he could see his reflection - and he had to admit, it looked pretty scary.

He sat near his father's den while Resi soaked up some sunshine; that very same mean look was on his face, and every so often he'd get up and walk a circle around 'the perimeter' just to assure Resi that he was on the ball.

It was during one of those circles that he saw his cousin. He groaned quite loudly.

Quote:
User ImageNits' groan was enough to rouse Resi, and the brown youth forced an eye open. He knew that Nits took his 'job' very seriously, and he wasn't about to tell him how ridiculous he looked, honestly. If it made Nits happy, it made Resimus happy. Besides, he was pretty ace at keeping away both Dyre and Heldig.

In fact, Nits was really great at keeping all of the young females away that might have an eye on him, thankfully.

When he caught sight of Yolla almost-loping towards them, Resi rose to his feet and yawned before staring curiously at his cousin.

"What.. are you okay, Yolla?"

"Hi, Nits!" Yolla said.

He felt like s**t, so he had to force himself to sound enthusiastic. Nits certainly didn't sound the least bit enthusiastic to see him, but maybe the groan was unrelated. Or maybe he'd already heard about what had happened earlier in the sparring grounds and was bemoaning their relation.

"I'm fine!" Yolla lied with so much energy that his voice jumped up an octave on the second word. His extra-wide smile made his cheeks hurt.

He slowed his pace once he was within Nits' silly perimeter. He knew all about that, of course, and ordinarily didn't think it was as impressive as his cousin-thing did, but right now it served as a clear boundary between the utter suckage that was the majority of the pride and the relatively relaxing place that was his family's den.

"How're you doing?" he asked the pair.

Quote:
"He looks a little beat up, I think. Maybe even like he been crying a bit, Resi."

It kind of irritated him in the 'nobody messes with my family' sort of way, but then again Nits was an overprotective sort - even if his cousins dad was kind of crazy - Nits really tried not to hold that against Yolla. It worked, usually, but sometimes it didn't.

Especially when Yolla was acting strange, himself.

"You sure you're fine, Yolla?"

Quote:
Resi gave Nits a look before giving Yolla his full attention. The sight that greeted him wasn't something that looked like the result of a friendly fight, or a soft-pawed wrestle or anything of the sort. The gashes and gouges that covered Yolla's hide were fresh, some of them quite deep, and it panicked Resi to the point where he moved towards his cousin rather quickly and frantically.

"You are not fine, Yolla. What in the name of the Gods happened? You're battered and .. ah, Gods. Yolla. Tell me what happened!"

There was no denying that Resimus sounded a bit motherly, but he couldn't help it. Nobody liked seeing this kind of thing - at least, he certainly didn't.

Once in a while, Yolla thought, it would be nice if his cousins were stupid. Then they wouldn't keep asking him all these questions that he definitely didn't want to answer. Because if he answered them he'd probably start crying again. Not because he hurt mind, but because he was embarrassed that he'd let someone hurt him like that to begin with. And then he'd be more embarrassed because he'd cried and that would make him cry more.

Maybe he didn't need stupider cousins. Maybe he needed less leaky eyes.

"I'm fine," he repeated, growling a little at Nits. To speak to Resi he moderated his tone and said, "Really. I got into a fight is all."

He plopped down on his bum, which was probably the least painful part of him all things considered, and decided that it would be most expeditious to give them an abridged account of the afternoon's events so far.

"I went down to watch the reavers spar and see if I could convince one of them to teach me to fight, like Dad wants." They knew about his dad's wish for him to at least learn to fight, even if he wasn't going to be a reaver. "And I ended up in a fight with this creepy cub whose voice is really weird and he was just...really vicious. I think I made him angry."

Belatedly it occurred to Yolla that he might've met another lion like his father. But he dismissed the idea. He'd seemed a lot more reasonable than Yolla's dad did in his berserker moments. Just angry.

Quote:
Nits remained silent for a moment, almost as if he were trying to deal with the fact that Yolla had just growled at him. At him! He was just trying to help - there was no reason to get all uppity. Had he really just been growled at by Yolla?

He sat in stunned silence as he tried to reconcile the fact that yes, he'd just been growled at by Yolla, and yes, his feelings were actually kind of hurt.

Quote:
Resimus was surprised, too, but for another reason altogether!

"What kind of fight was this, then? You've got yucks all over you - that one looks particularly brutal, that one there - and you haven't even really gotten them tended to yet, have you? Have you gone to see a healer?"

Resimus continued with his clucking.

"And what were you thinking, going out to spar with Reavers." He gave his cousin a look. He was really good at giving looks.

"I bet Nits would spar with you. This was no simple spar, either, looking at the damage left behind."

Resimus grunted softly as he circled his cousin, tsking and shaking his head all around.

Quote:
"Can't believe y'just growled at me, Yolla."

Nits sounded a little miffed. Put out.

Quote:
Resimus paused, sighed and gave Nits another look before lifting his paw to gently pat his brother's shoulder.

"The jerk took offense when I told him he couldn't possibly be related to the Warlord because none of the High Priestess's cubs had cubs. Or maybe it was because I said it sounded like he had a cold. I don't know."

Explaining fighting things to Resi was hard. Resi was even less of a fighter than Yolla was, and trying to explain why he had to get a reaver to train him rather than just figure things out wrestling with Nits was beyond Yolla's abilities. He looked to Nits for help, but then realized that Nits was already being given a look.

Watching Resi give Nits a look Yolla felt guilty that Nits was the only one being treated to that expression when he'd been just as rude."'M sorry I growled at you though. Wasn't necessary."

"But you said it looked like I'd been crying," Yolla grumbled at Nits. "What'd you expect me to do?"

Nits should count himself lucky Yolla wasn't like that arse from the arena. Otherwise Yolla probably would have just launched himself at his cousin-thing with teeth and claws bared and proceeded to tear him into bloody strips.

Quote:
Nits merely grunted in response to Yolla's apology, pale eyes still holding that rather wounded expression.

"I was just trying to say to Resi in case he couldn't see himself that it looked like you been crying, that's all. Gods." There was a definite whine to his voice, but he quelled it. He was the big protective brother, there was no room for simpering and sobbing. No room at all, and by the Gods if he earned one more look from Resi he was simply going to go insane.

"Da's got some salve in the den. I'll go get it, Resi."

Quote:
Resimus was silent. He gave an absent nod to his brother - who promptly ran off - before turning his crimson eyes to Yolla.

"Maybe," Resi said softly, "he's tender about being the son of a b*****d."

Heldig was good at gossip if nothing else. She was keen on hiding around the adults, picking up on hints of chit chat among the members of the pride. She'd been one of the first to find out about Herryk's litter - and she'd immediately come to him about it.

One of her better qualities, really.

"Or maybe he's touchy about this high-pitched voice you say he has, I don't know, Yolla."

"Thanks, Nits. Dad probably has some at home, but balls if I know where he keeps it." It felt good to swear gratuitously. Grown-ups and reavers swore like that. It made him feel a bit less like a wimp who just got his a** handed to him.

"I don't care if he's tender about that. Or about his stupid voice," Yolla grumbled. "I just don't want to lose the next time we fight."

Once Nits was at least out of eyesight, though perhaps not out of earshot, the blue-eyed cousin confided something else in him. "He said that if I lost to him again he'd take me as his thrall. Can he do that?"

The whole thrall thing was kind of confusing to Yolla, who knew that one of his dad's cousins was a thrall by choice, or something like that. No one in his family kept thralls, maybe because of that. He wasn't sure. Either way, the threat of being taken as a thrall by that crazy, creepy b*****d was a horrible thought.

Resimus stared long and hard at his cousin, speaking only when he felt certain that Nits was gone.

"I don't know if he can do that, honestly," Resi was troubled seeing Yolla like this. Nobody liked to see their family brought down a notch or five (even if they probably deserved it), and this was no different.

"Maybe you should talk to your da about it."

Of course, this was coming from a lion who had been pretty much pampered each and every day of his life. If he had an issue, he went to da. Da took care of all the terrible things that Resi didn't want to have to deal with.

He shrugged, falling silent once more as Nits returned.
Quote:
The green and white lion drew up quick, skidding to a halt as he panted softly around a large leaf that contained the healing salve.

Nits dropped it at Yolla's feet, rolling back to his haunches as he watched his cousin expectantly.

"Go on, then," he tapped it forward with a paw, frowning. "I can get yer back if you can't reach, but I ain't smearin' it all over you."

He sniffed quite manfully.

Not surprisingly, Yolla was not reassured by Resi's reply. He'd really been hoping to be told that it was ridiculous, and impossible for a freeborn to be made into a thrall by another freeborn. Granted, the Warlord could probably make a freeborn into a thrall, but that was different. And probably only used as a punishment. Not for losing fights.

"Maybe."

In the pit of his stomach Yolla felt very sick about the whole thing. Thinking about it only made it worse. Outlanders could be made into thralls without question and Yolla was, after all, an outlander of sorts. He was vikingborn to a reaver who had been born an outlander.

"That's great, Nits. I can get most of it, I think. Just the bits on my shoulders where his claws dug in. I can't quite reach." At least not without horrifying amounts of pain.

He wrinkled his nose at the smell and feel of the goop on his paws as he began to smear it over anything that hurt. Before long he realized this was going to use up all of the smelly gunk, and perhaps he should be more selective and only apply it to places where the skin was broken.

Quote:
Nits looked a little too eager to get muck all over his paws, and with great relish he dove into the goop and started smearing it liberally over his cousin-thing's shoulders and back.

"So what're you gonna do about this jerk," Nits started up quite conversationally. "You know I got your back if you need it. Resi too, though he shouldn't be fighting."

Nits cleared his throat and sent his brother a sideways glance, settling back to focus his goop-administrations to Yolla's haunches.

Quote:
"I don't think there should be any fighting," Resi said with relative timidness. "But, I mean. You can't just let this guy push you around, Yolla. It's a show of weakness, and if you want to be a fighter then you're going to have to get stronger."

Resi was suddenly pretty glad that he had no interest whatsoever in becominga Reaver or a Captain - make him a lawspeaker any day, or maybe even a dye-crafter. That wouldn't be such a bad life. Even being a healer wouldn't be half bad.

Clearing his throat, Resi watched over his brother and his cousin, looking thoughtfully troubled.

"Ow, ow, ow!" Yolla muttered as Nits began to help him putting the goop on. He wasn't whining. He was, um, doing something else that definitely wasn't whining.

"Yeah, I know. And I'm definitely going to get him back, but I'm not really sure how yet." He winced.

Resi's opinion in this case went completely unheeded. Yolla wasn't much of a fighter either, having been raised by a very sweet, peace-loving mother just long enough for it to make an impression, but in this instance he knew there was no option that didn't involve violence.

Besides. He wanted to hurt that freak. For the first time in his life, he really wanted to hurt someone. He had been publicly humiliated in front of the very reavers he was supposed to be impressing so that they would train him.

"I don't really want to be a fighter, Resi. You know that. But Dad wants me to learn to fight. This creep made me look like an idiot in front of the whole pride. I have to get him back. I have to kick his a**."
PostPosted: Thu Jul 19, 2012 9:41 am

Quote:
Nits merely rolled his eyes at Yolla's grumbles and kept right on slathering the goop all over his cousin's back. He kept quiet, though, up until the point that Yolla mentioned some a**-kicking. That thought made the patchy lion perk up. He was pretty good at fighting.

"I'll help. I can help. Can I help? Let me help. We can think of a real good way to bring him down."

Nits' almost-gentle ministrations of the salve turned almost savage as he thougth about bringing the pain.
Quote:
Resi merely sighed loudly, his gaze flitting between his brother and his cousin.

"If you don't want to fight you shouldn't have to fight," he finally said, sounding rather disgusted.

"And I can't really help," Resi grumbled, eyeing Nits. "I mean, I don't think you should face him alone again, and certainly not with your scratches barely healed but.. come on, Yolla. Maybe it would be best to just forget about him, but if you insist on getting him back, we should come up with a good plan."

"Ow! Yes you can help. I want you to help," Yolla agreed, flinching away from Nits. He sidled away from Nits to finish up with the gloop. He was nearly done anyway. "But you have got to stop jabbing me. It hurts."

After he finished he wiped his paws on a clean patch of his own fur, figuring it wouldn't hurt to have it there and it was better manners than to make a muck of his cousin-things' den. At that point he had to deal with Resi's disapproval, which wasn't much fun. He knew Resi was smarter than he was, but he didn't seem to understand the ramifications here. No one expected him to learn to fight, and that was fine because he was smart. But Yolla wasn't like that.

"I'm not going to face him alone. I'll have Nits with me. And before you say that won't be fair, it's called retribution. He hurt me, so I'm going to hurt him worse." He knew the word retribution, but he hadn't yet learned the words feud or vendetta. If he had, he might have understood Resi's reluctance to go along with his plans.

"Besides, it's not like I plan to go off right this minute and deal with him. I'm going to wait and get him when he least expects it. But when everyone will see. Maybe I won't even have to fight him. Maybe I can just make it so he'll be in an embarrassing situation and I can step in and rescue him. I bet that'd be more embarrassing for him than losing a fight."
