Asper was not the only member of the family who was incensed by the the harm which had befallen Atheris at the pugilistic paws of some red-furred ruffian.
When Galning heard about it he was pleasantly buzzed. About an hour later he had passed beyond pleasantly buzzed into dangerously drunk. It was at that point that he came to the conclusion that he would have to kill this lion who had so wounded his cousin.
He had actually reached that conclusion immediately, but it had taken him an hour of steadily consuming fermented fruit and chewing mint to work himself up to being in a state to issue a challenge. Because this was, after all, Hinoko. The lion who had beaten him to get into the pride and then...well.
Let's just say Galning was not ready to deal with him sober.

Hinoko was in a sorry, sorry state of misery and self hatred. His life, it was so terrible. His leg, it was still pretty ******** up. His wife, oh, his wife. Melinoe was a brute. A brute that he hated. He prayed every day that she would find herself with cub so that he would be a little freer to do as he wished. As of yet she was not with cub. He could feel her disgusted looks. It infuriated her - and while Hinoko supposed he should find some sort of pleasure in her disgust, there was none to be found. None. Days had passed since his altercation with Asper, and while he could walk, he could not walk well. Thick scabs marked his rump and hind leg. These wounds would undoubtedly scar, but Hinoko could not bring himself to care. His life was filled with woe. The woe dissipated slightly when he caught sight of Galning as he was limping past. He couldn't help but pause. Yeah, Galning looked pretty wasted.

"Hinoko!" Galning roared as he tore through the pride. Sober he would not have been able to do this. He would have been too conscious of the spectacle he was making, and afraid that if he failed there would be a pride full of witnesses. But under the influence, Galning was invincible.
Under the influence, Galning also could not go berserker to save his life. Both fermented fruit and mint were the sort of intoxicants which tended toward depressants rather than antidepressants, and so hyperactivity of the sort required for berserking was simply out of the question. This was probably a very good thing for Hinoko.
Standing outside of Hinoko's den, Galning continued to roar.
"Hinoko get your flaming a** out here so that I can bugger you so hard your...braaaap!" Whatever was going to happen as a result of Galning's vengeful wang was cut off by a tremendous belch.

Okay, Galning was beyond wasted. Galning was supersonic-blasted-off-his-a**-tore-up.
"Gods be damned, Galning, you reek of mint and berries -- and what do you mean, bugger me? Bugger me so hard my what?"
Really? Did Hino really want to know what Galning had been about to say? Probably not.
Hinoko lowered his voice.
"You look like a fool. You sound like a fool. You smell like a fool." Hinoko shook his head in disapproval. At least this was taking his mind off of his own dire straits. That was worth being thankful for.
"You're not going to be buggering my anything," Hinoko grouched haughtily. "My leg is wounded - but perhaps when I heal I'll beat the ever-loving s**t out of you."
Hinoko gave a manful sigh.
"Go home and sleep it off, fool."

"And you reek of cowardice and cruelty and...cuntliness!" Galning retorted.
"You will be buggered so hard that your a*****e won't close properly again and your s**t will just run out all the time." That wasn't what he was originally going to say, but it would suffice. The original thing had been better, but it was in the past and Galning did not live in the past while inebriated. Except for grudges. He remembered those very, very well. It was why he was here, after all.
His opponent was wounded. Well, that would take away some of the glory of this victory, but Galning would not be deterred. His clouded brain whirred and churred and eventually came up with an appropriate response.
"You attacked a thrall. Do you see any difference between doing that and fighting a lion with a wounded leg? Because I don't. We fight now or I make this an official holmgang and if you don't show up in three days, the entire pride will know that you are a worthless piece of tripe."

Hinoko couldn't help the flash of surprised that washed across his face. Cuntliness? What in seven hells. He limped closer to Galning, eyes narrowed dangerously.
"Yes, I attacked a thrall. So what? Have we all gone suddenly fluff-hearted? You think to toss around idle threats?"
He drew closer still. He might be wounded and his pride already trampled to smithereens, but he felt as if Galning needed a reminder of their last fight.
Hino lowered his voice.
"Do you forget our last spar? The one where I buggered you, Galning? Is that what you're really after?"
Probably not his wisest move, but he was irked by the threat of a holmgang.

"Does anything about this look like an idle threat?" Galning snarled. "I am doing you the courtesy of not formalizing this challenge so that when I beat you, you can slink off to lick your wounds without an audience. Otherwise, I assure you, we would be meeting three days hence with witnesses."
Hinoko drew closer. Much too close for his own good, given how Galning probably smelled. After he had spoken his piece, Hinoko was definitely too close to Galning. Because Galning had been getting himself drunk specifically to forget that episode before coming to issue his challenge. The reminder was an unwelcome one that could only be met one way, and that one way did not involve further speech.
Galning didn't even have to lunge. Hinoko was so close he had only to turn his head and strike, aiming for the small but vulnerable area beneath Hinoko's chin where his mane did not quite reach. He would rip Hinoko's throat out if he was able and if not his sharp teeth would undoubtedly find some painful purchase. After all, his foreclaws had also shot out to drag Hinoko closer and prevent him from fleeing or dodging.

Hinoko had regretted the words the instant they spewed forward from his lips. As soon as his verbal vomit had ceased, Hinoko realized that he was in for a world of pain. Sure, Galning was completely schnockered off his a**, but it didn't mean that his bite didn't hurt. Gods. Hinoko let out a screech of pain as he felt Galning's teeth sink into his throat - and he was trapped now. Utterly trapped. An acute pain arced through his leg, and Hinoko went down when Galning's claws jolted out to draw him closer.
At least that b***h Melinoe wasn't around to see this. Oh, she'd just love it.
c**t.
Hino didn't even bother fighting back. Whatever was going to happen was going to happen, and there wasn't anything he could do about it.

If asked at a later date what happened between him and Hinoko, Galning really could not have said, no matter what threats or inducements were offered. The whole thing really passed in something of a blur and all that stayed with him were momentary sensations and impressions. Claws piercing flesh, the tang of blood, the pounding of one muscular body into another. More than all that, what lingered in Galning's mind was the feeling that this was something of a hollow victory.
"Nobody hurts my family and gets away with it," Galning growled around a mouthful of mane. He shook his mostly-limp opponent for emphasis as he repeated, "Nobody!"
It was necessary to remind Hinoko as well as himself why this beating was taking place. Galning's opponent had been wounded from the start and he did not make any effort to fight back, only to defend himself. Had he been facing an outlander or sparring, Galning would have stopped, pulled back, and shown mercy, and a part of him wanted to do so now.
"You're done," Galning said, dropping Hinoko and stepping off of him.

Hinoko had no fight left in him. He had no urge to defend himself. His dignity was at an all-time low. He was utterly and completely shamed. After getting his a** completely handed to him there was nothing left to do but admit defeat, which he did willingly.
"I give, I yield," he rasped harshly. All he wanted to do now was sulk - alone. No b***h of a wife hovering, nagging him about all the failures he'd managed to accomplish in just a few short days. It was ridiculous, and in truth all he wanted to do was just... die.
Once Galning stepped away, Hinoko remained where he was. He made no move to rise, no move to strike.
He was done.

Galning's head was beginning to hurt. All that movement and energy expenditure had allowed him to burn through his intoxicants much faster than usual, leaving him dehydrated and with the beginnings of a hangover. Or, to be more accurate, a drunk-over. He had to get out of here before he undid all of the excellent work he'd accomplished here with ******** you, man," he said indistinctly to his felled opponent. Not the height of wit, but his vision was blurring and his ears were ringing and he was experiencing all the signs of a truly hellish morning to come.
As he moseyed away, taking the fastest dignified gait available to him, Galning decided that he did not want to think about how Yolla would react when he came in. He was going to focus on the positive here. He had defended his family's honor!

Hinoko did not move from the spot where he fell. It hurt to much, and he would rather die than go home to face his wife. He'd never been a kind or gentle lion, but in that moment Hinoko couldn't help but ache for a little bit of compassion, a little bit of anything except what he felt right then and there.
Morning would come and find Hinoko in exactly the same spot where Galning had left him.
