OOC
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. [ Task of Conquest: ] The Virus
This task requires a group of AT LEAST three initiated members (students or Horsemen), to a max of five members. They may go anywhere in the Human World using the portal catacombs in the Lair. These catacombs lead to small human world towns only. All players must follow these steps to successfully create a virus and then harvest the Fear from their virus. Follow the steps listed.

gaia_crown [ Step 1: ]

- The virus must first be created, from Fear. All players must imbue their Fears TOGETHER into a Fear-storage container. They may choose to use their natural ability, a Fear item they have, for example, something they won from school, or even something as simple as something a part of them, such as their hair or piece of clothing, a lab chemical or plant, etc etc, and PLACE IT INTO THE Fear storage container.
- Rp out all results as usual

- Roll a 10-sided dice. Conquest clans members roll 2d8 instead
1- 3: The Fear level from your offering is extremely weak.
4- 7: The Fear level from your offering is average.
8 - 10+ The Fear level from your offering is very good.

- ALL ROLLS ARE THEN averaged between all players. So if we have three players who rolled 2 + 5+ 10 that equals 2+ 5+ 10/ 3 = 6 TOTAL virus points. ROUND UP.

gaia_crown [ Step 2: ]

- After everyone has rolled and rp step 1, they can all now move to step 2, distributing the virus. Let the Fear-storage container do its work, for a little bit. Then, it is time to release it into the Human Town. You can release it anywhere in town: in a local water supply, spread it to the animals first, or simply attempt to find the local shelter to see if humans will pick up on it. As this virus is Fear-based, its requires Fear to be evoked from the atmosphere. That means you need to make the town nervous and paranoid so that their natural defenses drop. Only then will the virus do its work, seeping into the Human's own paranoia to stir their Fears even further and eventually kill them. There can be physical effects, this is up to you, or the virus can be entirely psychological/ fear-based. Talk it out with the rpers as to what you'd like the virus to look/ be like.
- All players can roll two times MAX. Rp out all results as usual.
- Conquest clans members get an extra roll

- Roll a 100-sided dice:
1- 2: You manage to find a shelter with old, elderly people. They are easily scared by your movement, as they think they see shadows, something moving in the corners. The Fear Virus seizes them easily and you gain your first victims. +2 virus points.
3- 4: You see some livestock milling around, well, the human livestock sort. Some strange dull cattle-like creatures. They are easily spooked by your presence and succumb easily to the virus. This is good news, it means the humans will directly consume your virus. +3 virus points.
5 - 6: You try to scare a group of Humans that look very busy in their household but they pay you absolutely no attention. They look way, way too happy, chatting with each other as they work. You cannot even evoke simple Fear here.
7- 8: You see a group of children, and they see you immediately, screaming. Human children are the most susceptible to Fear after all, with their wild imaginations. Their parents don't seem to be as susceptible though, the virus does very little for them as a whole. +1 virus points
9-10: You find a broken-down, decrepit place that resembles a haunted house. There are young Humans who are keen on exploring the inside. You scare them easily, and it is only a matter of time before they succumb to the virus as well. +2 virus points.

gaia_crown [ Step 3: ]

Once you have enough victims who have succumbed and you are happy with your result, you can now gather the Fear you have collected. Simply match your virus points to see how many Fear Points you have collected.
- You can conclude the town as your wish: destroy it, watch it rot itself, however you please.

1- 5 virus points: 1 Fear Point
6 - 12 virus points: 3 Fear Points
13 - 16+ virus points: 5 Fear Points

The most experience Mort had with horsemen was the time, on the Isle of War, that a brusque youngling had beaten him severely in three different bouts of combat with such casual ease he was almost disappointed each time the zomboil had trudged back for more target practice. Needless to say, Mort's opinion on their race was tenuously neutral bordering bleh.

Still, Medea had given them a chance to do more than sit idly by for the next disaster, and thus Mort reported when he was called for the task without hesitation. As it was he had the fortune to be paired with his zomboil, which would make things easier to bear, and he greeted Alex with a shoulder clasp and small smile; he wanted to ask after Yin, but now didn't feel like a good time. Maybe after heyvwere through and felt more energized by Fear.

The horseman, however, received a blink and small, apprehensive nod. It wasn't the blood that disturbed Mort (like something so simple would make an undead cringe): no, it was the way he looked at the zombies that sorta creeped him out. Mort's shuffle might have been just a bit hastened to get through the portal if only to escape that gaze for several seconds.

The group was lead to the outskirts of a town nestled at the base of the tall-grass hill they were deposited atop of, small trails of smoke coming from several chimneys. Farmland took up most of the space surrounding them, covered in corn and squash for the most part.

Quiet, unassuming, and a wellspring of good natured, if tired, citizens be labored under the heat of the sun.

Mort tugged at the collar of his shirt, his other hand covering his eyes from the bright not-pumpkin in the sky. Jack damnit, did it have to be so hot? "Mrrr...Wish could have someplace with snow," he murmured, squinting and all too aware of how he weather would affect his body. "Let's finish quickly."

Oh yes Mort, Sal was watching you.

It was hard to tell when the Sage's staring went from curious study to outright trying to be unnerving. He found the reactions he elicited from the new (to him) Zombie to be simply adorable. The way he blinked at him, the brief non-commital nod, the way he walked faster; oh yes, he was liking this Zombie already. Mort would likely have heard him chuckle to himself as he stepped through the portal shortly after, the various trinkets in his hair and clothing clinking in an almost happy way.

The Horseman didn't need much of a look around to get a general idea where they were, but his red eyes were back on Mort as he spoke, eyes lidded but brows raised in amusement. "Oh you young ones, always so eager." With a head tilt and a dramatic sigh, the Sage unwound one of the scarves around his head and shoulders; it took a few seconds of unwrapping before it was free and deposited on the boil's head. "Wear this~" He instructed, not offered. "It will keep the human sun from biting." It was an almost bored footnote reasoning; he had gotten used to it. The second wrapping was produced off of his shoulders, this one deposited on Alex.

He had to take care of his Zombies, naturally.

"This is your first time, you should savour it." He tutted as he adjusted what was left of his high necked robe, the emaciated Sage still hidden under a generous amount of layers. "Now, class, who knows what we are going to do here?" He seemed all too happy with playing School; his lidded eyes moving from zombie to zombie, clearly waiting patiently for an answer.

Alex had remained fairly stonily silent, even when he saw that he was going to get to go on this little 'task' with his good friend and fellow zombie, Mort, and the only horseman he really knew, Sal. He had debated even coming, really. He'd thought long and hard about whether this was the right path for him, his indecision wavering, the urge to just hide his gem fragment away and try to continue on with his unlife as usual conflicting against the anger that continued to consume him, and the unquenchable hunger for something...though he wasn't quite sure what. Really, after what had transpired with Yin, it was only a matter of time before the hunger won out. He wanted to do this. He wanted to get stronger, and he especially wanted to be able to get his revenge. On hunters. On humans as a race in general. Anything would do, really. It was just Mort and Sal's bad luck that they got to be partnered up with the zomboil when he was in such a sour and bitter frame of mind, and not anywhere near his usual cheerful and exuberant self.

He didn't even care to try and pretend.

He shuffled through the portal after the other two had gone, following along towards the town they were to...do whatever they were supposed to do with. Gather fear from, he assumed, else wise why would they even be here? His hand came up towards the skull clip on his neck tie, his red crystal tucked in safely behind and out of sight. The sun beat down on his head, and that only fueled his annoyances and set his face in a deep scowl. "I agree." He stated, his voice a growl that matched his mood almost too perfectly, before he shifted his attention to Sal, just as some kind of fabric wrapping thing was being tossed over his head.

Sighing, he closed his eyes and counted to five before opening them and doing as he was instructed, trying and probably failing to wrap himself up in the way he'd seen many famine horsemen do while he'd been on their isle.

"Nah, that beach during the famine trials was worse then this." He grumped a little, peeking out from the slit in the scarf, before attempting to answer Sal's question.

"Collecting fear?" Wasn't that obvious? Though really...Alex hadn't a clue as to what was really required of them. Were they just supposed to go around frightening everyone like they had in that fun house back in professor QB's class? Some how that didn't quite seem fulfilling enough. Somehow he felt like he needed to do more then just deal out a little bit of fright here and there.

Such was the starkness between their moods that Mort was forcibly reminded of a certain Pocket Monster from his game, Goredrio: a three headed murderous bird whose heads each represented anger, ambivalence, and amiability. It was probably a good thing he hadn't broached the Yin topic; it wasn't easy to get over the rage those Hunters had caused and, he'll, I'd Bell had been among the capture he'd be still simmering himself.

The horseman's gift was taken with a nod before Mort pulled it about his head as best he could without disturbing his glasses, and his wariness began to ante some. Certainly they could do worse than someone who just smiled a lot. "Thanks," he murmured through the cloth. "And, uh, what Alex said. Was mentioned would have to use machine f-for something?" he prompted, still a little squinty in spite of the scarf. "For facilitate Fear getting."

Alex's grump-tastic mood didn't get by the Horseman who, for the moment, chose to let him dwell on whatever it was that upset him. He often encouraged the children to feel whatever they needed to without fear of being told to suck it up or move on, and so far it seemed harmless to let Alex have his feels. Eventually though, like any parent, Salbei would put a stop to it one way or another.

"Yes, well, that was on your territory and ours. This one is neither." For now. Salbei tsked softly, clicking his tongue despite how cute it was that the grumpygus was trying to put up a tough front. The Sage was from Famine and sometimes the Human sun was too much for him. Sometimes.

"Correct! For the most part." His arms disappeared into his robes, pulling out the fear container moments later. It was held out carefully for the boils to inspect. "We are here to generate fear. We will start with the basics." He worked the container between his hands, humming thoughtfully. "I'm not sure what your school has taught you, but we have methods, you see." The Sage concentrated, red eyes narrowing seriously at the container as his fear crackled around him, focusing in on the item itself.

"In order to get a good haul we need to work up to it. It does take time, but all we have to do is plant ideas and their simple little minds run with it. They get nervous, doubt themselves...and it is contagious. Soon they're all on edge, they begin to panic. Regular shadows become Monsters, the comfortable things they knew suddenly feel wrong..." As he spoke he started to sound frustrated; since the fall of his isle he had been so weak...the container held some of his fear now, but it was only a small fraction of what he was capable of.

Perhaps this little trip would change that.

"...And then they become easy pickins', so to speak. We are going to use our FEAR to spark theirs, and when the time is right..." His amiable smile turned dark, twisting crookedly with the promise of bloodshed; it reflected in his narrowed eyes. Suddenly he was back to himself, handing off the container to Alex, who was slightly closer to him. "Focus your fear - or perhaps put a trinket if you wish - in there, both of you. We will be creating a virus today."

There was a slight pause.

"For starters, anyway. I hope neither of you are squeamish." Or human rights activists.

Alex chose to ignore Sal's comment, his irritation flaring at every little turn of phrase. Instead he focused on the lesson at hand, treating it like he would a class back at Amity, absorbing the knowledge that he was being given. Right, so they were going to do some scaring, but it was going to be more wide spread, something that would hopefully escalate out of something small and continue to snowball. Well, that's the impression he got, at least. That bloody and twisted smile sort of indicated more then just that, however, and for the first time Alex began to feel something besides anger worming it's way through him. He was nervous.

"A virus?" He actually perked up a little at that, standing up a little straighter. Sure his voice was still held the edge of a growl to it, but it was a vast improvement over earlier already. The zomboil did love to learn new things, after all, and this actually seemed straight up his ally, considering what his natural ability was. "Sounds fun."

He reached out and took the container from Sal, staring at it, thinking about what he was supposed to do. Focus his fear. Right, he could do that! And he had a pretty good idea what he could contribute as well. He concentrated a little, made a bit hocking sound in the back of his throat, opened his mouth, and spat into the container. His saliva, when imbued with fear, held a strange sort of temporary zombie virus. Sometimes it just made others feel slow and stupid, other times it actually hurt them over a period of time and made them feel sick. It seemed appropriate, anyways, and Alex handed the container over towards Mort next.

Oh Sal, you had him at "virus". And "panic". But very specifically "virus" made the zomboil's eyes light up with hidden fervor. It was one thing to play with the dumbed down mad scientist toy sets on a made up population, and actually creating a real specimen on live subjects another. This, coupled with the new crave that milled away within him, made thus eagerness at the idea all the more palpable.

Mort took the machine when offered and examined it further do a few moments, not even the bright sunlight enough to deter his curiosity. Feed it? Oh yes, gladly...Raising his right hand, he curled his fingers slightly and made as I to reach within the container, stopping an inch above the rim to deliver a strong bout of green electricity. The bolts arced both within and without the machine for several seconds before they disappeared and, satisfied, he hande it over to the horseman.

"Think Medea will allow borrowing afterwards?" Mort asked with a mischievous grin large enough that the contours of the scarf gave it away. "Would, ah, love to know more of horsemen t-tech."

"Virus." Sal confirmed, rather pleased that both boils seemed very keen on the word. It was a good start; a horrendously good start, really. "It IS fun! Great fun. I---" He paused as Mort spoke up, his red eyes widening in surprise as he took in the boil's words. His own gears started to turn and the Sage found himself grinning a real plotting grin, not just the tolerating parent one.

"That you will need to ask our Priestess, however..." As the container was handed back to him, he placed his free hand on the Blue boil's shoulder. "I was an Alchemist in my youth, you see; it is still a profession dear to me. Viruses were...somewhat of a speciality..." The subject triggered a cough, but it was one he could easily control. There would be no hacking up his lungs here! He hoped, anyway. "Perhaps you and I should have a chat one day." He imagined the boil had knowledge he did not; at least on the front of the going-ons of Amity. At least he could find some use for the boil, he was sure of it.

"This will do~" The container was eyed carefully, and then he held it out for either boil to hold on to. "Now, we need to plant this somewhere. Seeing as this is your first time I will leave it up to you as to where it is planted." Hence his holding it out for them to take and decide. Not wanting to influence them he kept his usual methods to himself, more curious as to what the boils would do.

"I will wait here, you two plant this somewhere in the village - together -" He gave a pointed look at Alex, who didn't seem to be okay with group work today. "-and come back to me. Do nothing else for now." They had to let it seep in before igniting it, after all. He gave a soft 'ah', as if remembering something. "Make sure it is in a common spot, or can be distributed easily once the time comes." Once the boils had the container he made shooing motions with his thin hands, content to wait for them to do their thing.

Alex watched with a certain amount of fascination when Mort added his own fear into the mix. Surely between the three of them they had been able to concoct something powerful enough to work with, and Sal was giving them praise for their efforts so that was probably a good sign.

Alex reached out to take the container from the Sage, taking in the next bit of instruction. Plant the container. Right. That sounded easy enough.

He decided to ignore the pointed look he was getting from Sal. Yes, he was in a bit of a sour mood. No he would not screw up the project by acting out or trying to do everything on his own without help. Besides, Mort was his zombro. He could trust him and any suggestions he might make were likely valuable.

"So, what do you think?" He asked, as they turned to make their way into the town. His voice might have still been a little gruff with the hint of a growl around the edges, but he was making an effort to not be a complete a*****e.

"Maybe throw it into their water supply? Or the middle of some place that is frequently used by the public? Like a park or something?" He was really just spitballing some ideas, hoping that together they could come up with a good plan.

An alchemist? Mort was briefly filled with all sorts of eager feels as he thought so loudly he was sure they could hear, JACKPOT. emotion_kirakira "Would be delighted!" he chirped with a boyish smile, all previously unflattering thoughts scattering. The coughing went without comment; scientists would always bear the marks of their professions after all. But first, the task. He saluted with his mechanical hand before hobbling off with Alex.

Mulling over the other zomboil's suggestions, Mort surveyed the village again as they walked. "Mrrr . . . Don't think we'll find park here. Too small, mostly farm. Water supply's viable, river runs near." He tugged at the cloth about his head to adjust to the shifting sunlight, spots dancing in front of his eyes from watching the water. Mort would have offered to help carry the machine, but Alex's simmering mood made him less inclined to ask; for now, he'd have to act as though it was a non-issue. As they passed through the fringes of the town unseen, Mort turned his head this way and that, nostrils flared. The smell of humans was terribly delicious, and he was this close to trying to concentrate his FEAR and immobilize a child right then and there to eat.

Well, it was what the strange gnawing in his core wanted at least: More. It was vague enough that he could constitute it as hunger.

But before the idea could spring into action, Mort heard what sounded like a cacophony of voices off to the side, deeper into the town. Leading Alex through the street, the zomboils eventually found themselves near the heart of the civilization, a rounded, noisy marketplace where peddlers exchanged goods for more of the strange paper currency he'd seen in the DETH field trip, and urchins ran unbridled in their games. Mort looked to Alex with a devious smile. "Strike at heart of population will make work faster," he theorized, taking the initiative to locate a niche for Alex to set the machine down.

And when they were through, Mort gave the occupants of the poor, unwary town a passing glance before heading back to Salbei, feeling nothing but quiet enthusiasm at seeing the virus in action. "Settled in their center of trade, sir," he reported. "How long should wait before check in on effects?"

As promised Sal had not moved from that spot; not even his mess of robes seemed different than when the boils left. He was observing the humans mulling about from where he stood, red eyes shifting from one to the other as they came into his line of vision. So tiny, so young...so beautifully fragile. On the inside he was dying of excitement, but outwardly he was calm and still, smiling away in that fox-like manner of his.

When the boils returned his gaze moved towards them almost reluctantly, though at the update (or perhaps the way he was called Sir) his smile widened. "Very good, young ones!" He praised, his hands appearing from his robes to clap softly like a fawning teacher. "Soon," He assured Mort, his bone feet clinking softly against the ground as he walked on past them, heading the way the boils had come from.

"We need to kick start our little toy~" The Horseman explained, figuring the pair would just follow him. He paused on the edge of town, where the amount of Humans became a little more dense; he was excited, so excited, but he had to wait. Patience for the sake of the little ones; they were still learning, and so he could wait to get his kicks.

"So, my Undead Pumpkins...now you do that you were born to do~" Salbei's amiable smile widened again, twisting into something more dangerous. Scaring was not something he wanted to do, sure he enjoyed it greatly...but it was the killing he preferred. Though, he supposed it was nice to play with his food every now and then.

"Go scare some Humans." He swung his arm out in invitation, in a tone of voice that sounded more like he was letting students out for recess. "Have fun, be creative, and do not be caught off guard!" He called after them. Stay put, Salbei. Just a little longer. All the boils had to do was get started and he could go play himself.

With the odd fear storage contraption set in what he hoped was an ideal location, the two boils had made their way back to Sal. The zomboil remained silent. letting Mort and Sal do all the talking and discussing, but listening with rapt attention as an explanation for what they now needed to do was given. He turned around to shuffle along behind Sal, who was leading them back towards the town again, stopping to one side of him when he stopped. So, the virus would only spread once they had done some scaring? Well, that certainly seemed easy enough. Unbidden, a smile began to spread across his face that did not at all match the evil intentions in his eyes.

"Yes, sir." He mimicked the title that Mort had given the Sage. This was a task that he was more then willing to take on. He remembered the feeling he got in professor QB's class after he had generated a little fear out of the humans in the funhouse. That high, that rush of energy. It had been delicious. He would only happily do what he could to re-experience that feeling once more. It would be a hell of a lot better then stewing in his own dark and rage filled thoughts any longer, at least.

At that point they all separated, even if doing so often seemed like a bad idea to the zomboil. That was likely just his instincts talking, though. He was used to 'hunting' in a group, and being part of a horde. This going solo business was not something he was really accustomed to. Still, there was a first time for everything.

It took some wandering around before he found what he might consider ideal. As he shuffled along a street in a more run-down area of the small town, his gaze was drawn to an old and decrepit house, where young human scarelings were standing in the yard, creeping forward towards a door that hung off of it's hinges. They were clearly on some kind of dare to go inside, and the zomboil cocked his head to the side as he watched, that same creepy grin from before spreading across his face.

Humans. They made things too easy sometimes.

He followed behind them, shuffling ever closer, concentrating on his fear as he loomed up behind them, skeletal foot scraping along the wooden floor. One of the young boils turned, eyes wide, asking his friend if he'd heard something, and Alex let his concentrated fear die away as he brushed past them , ghosting his fingers across the other boils cheek as he went past, which made the child reach up and rub at the area, likely thinking it just a spiderweb. Whatever hushed conversation they had at that point Alex ignored as he took in the surroundings, trying to decide how to utilize what he could.

And then it was just a matter of putting his actions into play. The boils were already ripe for the picking, really, and needed very little to push them. A few well planned creaks in the floorboard, some looming shadows in places that there really should not have been shadows. What really seemed to send them over the edge, however, was when he managed to slam a door behind them when they'd entered into the bathroom, keeping it 'locked' shut so that they couldn't escape. The electricity had long been turned off so they were trapped in near complete darkness, the only light coming in through a murky window that allowed little to filter through, their panic almost palpable as they rattled and banged at the door, screaming in terror. And then if either of them should have happened to glance at the mirror, a flash of white. Deathly pale eyes reflected back at them instead of their own features, and a mouth that quirked up into a bloody smile.

He let the door go, and the scarelings ran in fright, and the power of their fear as it thrilled through him left him chuckling as he shuffled his way out of the house. His only regret was that they had left too quickly for him to see what effects the virus might have had on them.

+2 virus points.

"Sir!" Again Mort saluted, his grin wide and toothy as he shuffled off after Alex, parting once they hit the town. Like Alex, he was not used to working as a single agent - but there was a first time for everything.

Wandering past the marketplace just to make sure the machine was still humming, Mort perked at the sound of high-pitched laughter and followed the peals around the bend. It seemed the urchins from before had moved their game of tag to the wider street. Nonchalant as could be, Mort adjusted the shawl on his head to leave his mouth open and his eyes in the shadows and moved himself closer and closer until he was almost in their midst them, whereupon he began to growl and gurgle as if his throat was mangled.

The children turned as one to look up at him, half of them stunned, the other half immediately yelping at the sight of some unnaturally blue figure lurching into their midst. Mort's grin was strong enough that it split his seams and offered them a lovely view of his newly sharpened teeth - all of them - and the other half soon joined the frightened as they fled and screeched back to their hovels. One tried to stay behind and look intimidating, but he too was sent screaming away once reddish saliva began to seep from the corners of the zomboil's mouth.

Mort leaned against the wall and threw his head back in an ecstatic cackle that his ghoulfriend would have been proud of, wiping at his mouth with Sal's scarf as he felt the exhilaration of their Fear wash over him. This was what it meant to be of Halloween!

The children returned to their respective caretakers with wild tales of the walking dead in their midst, but even still most of the parents dismissed it as overactive imagination. Still, the look of fear in their eyes was not imagined . . . The virus slowly began to do its insidious work, planting doubt in the minds of those who heard the outlandish tale. It had been strangely quiet in the village today, like an invisible haze had descended upon them and muffled their sounds.

But that had to be nonsense. The dead were dead expressly because they could no longer live, nor talk, nor walk. So where had the children gotten their morbid descriptions from . . . ?

Salbei watched as the boils left in their separate directions, miming wiping away a tear. They were so precious! He felt like he was watching his own children go off to school for the first time, and he was so incredibly proud.

Who needed to have little baskets when you could adopt a hoarde of someone else's babies?

After they vanished from his sight he moved off himself, wandering until he came across what he was looking for; a shelter. He always liked to torment the elderly, they were easy to frighten plus, if they had a loving and gullable family, his virus could spread pretty fast. The ones who weren't on the verge of being senile always had his favour, they were more easily believed.

Plus, sometimes it lead to unnecessary tests to see if they were senile, and all the more fun when the tests came back negative. He managed to make it through the shelter without being seen, ghosting along and causing a few people to shiver for no apparent reason. He searched the rooms and found a common area that was somewhat populated.

There he turned off their TV before ghosting over and blaring the radio - after a few flickers of the lights (yay lightswitch raves, those were also fun), he started to prey on a select few individuals. He tapped them on the shoulder, he whispered things into their ears, and when he left he made sure to be a shadow, just before slamming the door shut on them.

He also loved the classics.

Somewhere, somehow, he just knew that one of his boils was making a mess of his scarf.

Oh well, onto the next one!
