I'm sure I'm the only loser that has ever heard of this game, but that's alright. Feel free to bask in the reflected glow of my super nerd powers. :B This is also a game that I've had going in another thread, but never really thought to put it in here. Go figure.
Anyway, the name of the game is Alpha and Omega. The object: to say a word that begins with the same final letter/syllable as the previously mentioned word. A quick example: If I say "blue", then you have to say a word that begins with "e"; "eagle", "emulate", "effigy" or "enormous" are all acceptable, for example. The general rules:
- Any word may be used. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc. - No using different conjugations of the same word unless the conjugation is irregular. (Ex. 'be - is - was' are all acceptable, but not 'jump - jumped - jumping'.) - If you so choose, you may use the entire ending syllable or, in the case of silent vowels, use the penultimate consonant. (Ex. "blithe" [using the entire ending syllable] => "theatre" [then, using only the consonant, due to the silent e] => "ripple".) - Don't repeat words.
The twist: You can use any word from any language that you know. (If the word isn't in English, please translate [even if everyone might already know the word], and if the language uses a script other than the Latin alphabet, please transcribe.) I've never played this way before, so there are no specific rules for the other languages yet other than the ones previously outlined. I'll just jot down ideas for rules if problems or difficulties should arise. The only one I can think of is that repeating the word in a different language is acceptable, so long as the letters (or syllables) coincide.
Here's a quick example spanning several languages: Fury => りんご (ringo, "apple", Japanese) => oriens ("rising", Latin) => 好き (suki, "like", Japanese) => κυκλός (kyklos, "circular", Greek) => свобода (svoboda, "freedom", Russian) => daller ("to pave", French)
So, we all just take turns doing this. I'll start with an English word (so boring, I know). Ready?
Converse!
