No one had been more surprised than Saskiranel when her youngest son's romance resulted in cubs. As in grandchildren. It was just...mind-boggling. She knew that while it wasn't common for lions and leopards to have children, it did happen. But the lioness also knew that those hybrid children rarely had children.
For her son to be one of those rare fertile exceptions was disconcerting. Even moreso was the fact that his...mate?...the mother of his children?...was also a leopon. And they had more cubs together than Sas and Hantan did! It was so incredibly strange.
Not to mention awkward. The fact that Hashiel and 'Divy did not yet have a den of their own meant that Sas' had become the (temporary) default home for the cubs.

Osrod's little paws stomped on the ground as he tromped around the den, bored bored bored. He knew that it wasn't always the best to wander out alone, and he didn't want to upset his parents. Still, there was only so much ear tugging and paw chewing he could handle. He wanted adventure! Action! Romance! Ok, not so much the last thing. Girls were kind of icky.
He was looking at his paws, and not paying attention to where he was going. Thunk! He ran right into the wall of the den, and flew backwards, his little paws twitching in the air.
"Oooowww!" He cried a bit, more surprised than anything.

Sas looked up from her reminiscing with a resigned smile. Cubs. They were always adorable, no matter whose they were. And she couldn't help but love the little furballs anyway, they were so cute.
Looking over, the Guard saw that the crying came from Osrod. The leopon always touched a chord in Saskiranel's heart, being the one whose appearance most resembled her own. Perhaps it was something she should try to avoid, but she couldn't help feeling a bit partial to him. It would probably be okay, as long as she didn't allow such inclinations to influence how she treated any of her grandchildren.
The adult lioness stood over the cub. "You're not bleeding...why are you crying little one?"

He sniffled, doing his best to be 'manly' and straighten up. It wasn't very easy, mainly because he wasn't very old yet.
"It...it scared me," he said through a few more sniffles. He looked up to see his grandmother, and buried his face into her large arm. He wasn't crying more, he just wanted to wipe off the rest of the tears so he would look better.
"Um...do we always have to be in here, Grandma?"

Sas raised a mental eyebrow at that one. What in the world was there to scare him in here? Hopefully he'd grow out of this phase soon enough. "What was it that scared you?" she asked instead.
"And no, you don't have to be in here. Where would you rather go?" the lioness asked kindly. Inwardly she grimaced. Boy had motherhood, and now grandmotherhood softened her approach!

"It attacked me!" he whined, pouting a bit. Why didn't grandma get it? Maybe...you didn't understand things when you got older. Oh, how wrong Osrod was, he just didn't have a clue.
He blinked his wide lavender eyes at his grandmother, amazed that she had asked that. "Where...where would I go?" He looked down for a moment, still cuddled against her leg. "I dunno...I dunno what's out there." He hadn't really seen much, and before he had been more worried about when his siblings would pounce him more than what was around him.

The Guard blinked. There certainly wasn't anything in the den that struck her as being able to attack, so she was going to chalk this up to cub clumsiness. Not that she'd tell Osrod that. The kid didn't need that kind of confidence hit.
"Well, there's your grandfather," Sas mused aloud. "I'm not sure if you mother lives with him or not. Not to mention an entire pride's worth of creatures." She smiled down at her grandson. "But I don't know that you're quite ready to wander around the whole of the pride yet."

Osrod pouted a bit. He didn't quite understand why he couldn't go wandering around. He didn't understand the dangers, but also...that perhaps his family wanted to shield him from what the pride was, at least for a little bit.
"Sounds boring," he grumbled. "I want adventure, Grandma!" Lots and lots of it! Why didn't anyone want to take him out on their errands, or just give him some sort of area to play it? The den had to be enough for him now, as much as he disagreed with it. Grandma wasn't the weak link, she wasn't going to give him what he wanted.

Saskiranel smiled at the cub. "It's not that we want you bored, but I don't think you have the endurance to walk all over the pride yet. That's all. When you're a little bigger, okay?"
Not that she was planning on being the one to take the kids all over the pride. But she certainly wasn't interested in trying to carry the entire litter home because the small cubs weren't strong enough to walk the distance yet. There wouldn't be enough space even if she carried some of them on her back!

The leopon blinked up sadly at her. She did look a lot like him....or well, he looked a lot like grandma! It was sorta neat, looking so much like her compared to his siblings!
"Ummm....grandma?" he asked her, shuffling his paws to and fro. He had an idea, but he wanted to see if she would even listen to his request before getting his hopes up.
"D-do you think you could do something, just for me?" He liked to feel special, only a little bit!

This was the problem with small children. You had to be very careful to not show any preferential treatment to any single one, else there would surely be resentment between the siblings. Still, Sas supposed there was no harm in at least finding out what Osrod wanted before agreeing or rejecting his request.
"What is it, little one?"

Osrod's eyes could glisten with how excited he was. "Um, do you think you could find something cool for me to play with in here? Something out there, somewhere." He didn't really know what, but he figured his grandma could read his mind. Something neat! Better than the few, minimal things that lingered within the den. Even if he had a great stick to play with, or something!
"Then I can play more in here without the wall attacking me..."

"It was the wall that attacked you!?" Saskiranel lost her train of thought for a moment at the surprising realization of what had caused the young cub to cry out earlier. That was...not what she'd thought to hear. And it was proof, if she needed it, that it was likely Osrod would end up a fighter.
"Well, I'm not sure I have anything more interesting to play with than the wall," she mused aloud slowly. Then the lioness made a show of catching sight of her own tail and a mischevious glint entered the green eyes.
"Hmmm...I seem to have a tail. Will this do, Osrod?" she asked the leopon.

"Hmmmm." He mimicked his grandmother, acting like this was a hard, hard decision for it. It seemed like something a lot of the adults did, so he figured it was something important to do.
"I guess so," he finally answered, wriggling his butt as he got ready to pounce on her tail. He'd miss, since he wasn't coordinated at all right now, but he'd get better! "Than maybe later you can bring me a stick!"
Then he'd be the best adventurer ever!

The lioness smiled at her grandchild. "Maybe. We'll have to wait and see."
Her tail, contrary to her words, moved to taunt and entice Osrod into moving here and there, almost as if it were a separate creature from the rest of her body. It was the first and best toy that Hashiel and his siblings had known, it was only right that his children should know it as well.
It was moments like this that made her appreciate her family for their simple existence.
