Aquila was finished with her training for the day and found her paws wandering... Wandering towards the borders, for reasons unknown. But as she had no duties immediately, she didn't find anything interesting to do at the core of the pride. Besides, there couldn't be too many eyes out here.
On top of that, the lioness was a little... bored today. Training left her with plenty of energy to burn. Perhaps that's why she had found herself near where the rogues tried to duel their way in. She sat and waited for someone new to appear, someone on whom she could spend that energy she had, and someone she could sharpen her skills with.

Moshi had at first been startled by how dry the desert was. He'd heard from his grandfather, but never actually set paw in it before. But the sand wasn't much different in his mind from silty mud - The only true differences were grain and water content. Sand was larger than silt, and had zero water. He closed his eyes, feeling the sun on his face and back. Yes, he could enjoy this... He could enjoy this a lot. He wasn't entirely sure... Why had Paa ever left such a wondrous place? It was just as well... If he hadn't, Moshi wouldn't have fully heard about the desert - His grandfather didn't know too terribly much, so he wasn't able to tell him much, which was what necessitated asking the spotted lion.
Now, he stood at what he'd been told the duel grounds. He shifted his paws in the sand, before spying the lioness. "I'm taking a guess, you're my duel partner today!" He smiled. "May the best lion win, then?"

Aqui's blue eyes brightened as the red lion stepped forward- she would indeed get her chance to get in more fighting today! She rose quickly to her paws and rolled her shoulders while he spoke. "Indeed, I'll be your opponent today. Prepare yourself!" she said with a slight snarl as she charged in. She would make a feign forward charge and instead jerk to the right at the last moment before lashing out with her paw hoping to strike his shoulder or ribs.

Moshi watched the lioness' movements, and as she began to charge, he gave a snarl and did so, too. It may have been a duel, but he was going to treat it like a very real fight. It was, after all, a fight for him to get into the pride. To be a member... The way the sand felt under his paws as he ran was amazing, shifting in a way that silt didn't. He had to correct his footing every few steps, which ended up making it possible for him to dodge a blow. After he'd passed the lioness, he pranced around, letting out a laugh. "Exciting already!"

"Glad you're enjoying yourself," she said with mild annoyance. Was he not taking this seriously? If this was going to be a battle where her adversary was going to simply prance about on her sands and avoid her, it would not have been a success on her part. No, he'd learn just how serious the fight was. Perhaps she was reading him wrong, but she wouldn't be afraid of that for now.
She was quick to redirect her energy into another attack- I will /not/ miss this time, she told herself in her head. She dug her feet into the sands the way she needed to to get the proper push-off; she lunged forward and aimed to sink her teeth into something- anything. Keeping in mind she didn't want to hurt the challenger permanently, she would bite with a little holdback should she connect. However, she did want him to know the sting of a Firekin- it would not be a gentle bite either, should it land.

When the blow landed in the form of a bite, Moshi let out a snarl. Oh, this was not going to be taken LIGHTLY... He wasn't taking the whole thing lightly, either. If he failed at this, he'd have to come back and try again after his wounds had healed some. Time wasn't something he was willing to use like that, though, and he retaliated, swiping a paw to land a blow. He snarled at her again, a growl rumbling in his throat, before he disengaged their battle stance. As he shifted in the sand, he looked at the lioness. "Having fun? Of course I am!" He gave a grin. "Defeating enemies can be fun, can't it? Make it a little entertaining..."

Good, that will have lit a fire under his paws. She was quite content with her move as she felt her teeth sink into the lion. His counter came really quickly, though, unexpectedly quickly. His paw connected with the back of her neck, and she quickly released her bite with a snarl. That hurt- she'd have a little ache in her neck for a short while, she was certain. Aquila would have to hide it, though, lest She was foolish to leave herself open like that- it would have been safer to bite elsewhere so she was more secure. She made a mental note of that for future training sessions.
In the meanwhile, since she was freed from his grasp, she put distance between them. "I do have to admit, defeating enemies is fun," she said, a bit of a smirk forming on her muzzle as she circled to charge again and strike with her claws.

His momentum was up, and Moshi circled the lioness before charging again. He felt his shoulder connect, though he wasn't sure where it had hit her. As he moved away, his paws shifted in the sand and he looked back, a grin on his face. "I think this day may be mine!" He didn't feel like he'd be coming back for another duel. If he wasn't winning, he was at least squeaking by enough to get in. For Moshi, that was enough, and then he'd be in a new pride with new faces to learn, and his coat would thin out from what it'd been in the swamps. He'd visit... One day... But now, his confidence was up and he was prepared for this change in his life.

Aquila felt his shoulder jam into hers, shoving it back. He had been braced for the impact, she had not- and so it wasn't exactly a nice gentle little brush. She wanted to lay off that leg for the rest of the duel, at least... Being her dominant swiping paw, she felt the need to keep it in good shape, in the long run. This outsider would not get the best of her, though!
The time for words was over, a simple snarl associated with her movement was all that would be audible from her. As they passed one another, Aqui made the quickest turn around possible and aimed to do the same as he had just done- a tackle-ramming type move, impacted with her good shoulder, was her aim. Where exactly she planned on hitting was unsure, as long as she knocked him off balance, hopefully for her next strike after her ramming idea.

Moshi just avoided the move, keeping his paws moving step-for-step. He wasn't letting her get him just yet. There was still time, and so far favor was tipped to his advantage. He couldn't help but prance a bit, though, a grin on his face, as if taunting Aquila.

That prancing... That had to stop. It was annoying and impractical, and she would prove so to him before this duel was done! Not to mention a little arrogant. "Sands too hot for you, boy?" she asked. Though she meant it as a counter-taunt, she knew many found the sands stinging to their paws. Heck, when she first got here, it took some getting used to. But she had since toughened up, something she was grateful for.
Her shoulder smarted a bit, but she would hopefully land one more blow, even with that dull ache. She had lost the feeling for future preservation of it, it could handle the strain of what she had in mind. The lioness darted forward, making it look like a feign, like the one she had started with. She made a quick small jerk to one side, hopefully making an opening, before lashing out quickly with one paw aiming for his shoulder. Hopefully if it landed, the impact of that attack would bring the battle back to even. Aqui wouldn't stand for twinkle-toes here defeating her if it could be helped.

The attack missed, just barely. Moshi turned, swatting at the lioness, only for his attack to come up far from short. Her tail was already out of reach. He gave a sneer, backing off. "No, the sand's not too hot... But the prancing did what it was supposed to... It made you mad." He smirked again, that taunting look. But the fight was over, and he knew it. They'd come out even, a square draw.

Perhaps, but insolent taunts are dealt with more viciously by others here... She hoped for the red lion's sake that he would realize the time and place for such things. Aquila was never much of one to appreciate condescension. Either way, she had at the very least removed whatever advantage he had gained, they were as flat as the sands. Continuing the duel would not gain any benefit.
"And made you look stupid," she said simply. An entertaining show, however, that she had to admit. "We seem to be evenly matched on this day, and your strength and resolve seem pure enough. Welcome to the Firekin," she said, making room for the newcomer to enter. "The name's Aquila," she added, wanting him to know her name.

The smirk vanished, replaced by a genuine grin of elation. He was in... He was in! It wasn't a WIN, but it was close enough. For this case, coming up even was good enough. As he started to walk into his new home, he paused by the lioness, listening to her name. "I'm M--" He stopped, thinking for a moment. "Leek. My name is Leek." From smoke to fire... It was fitting.
