His first duel had not quite ended as Nkera had expected. He had recovered quickly from the previous match - one he had fought against a former member of his former pride, interestingly enough - and so the green-eyed lion who had traded the mountains for the sandy desert was once again approaching the borders of the Firekin in order to make a second attempt at joining the desert warriors. There was still talk of a war looming close but Nkera gave it little importance. His decision had been made the moment he’d first heard about this desert pride and would not give up until he had found a spot amongst the Firekin ranks.
As he stepped closer to the place where he’d lost his first duel, Nkera let out a challenging roar and waited for one of the patrolling lions to join him.

Aquila sped across the sands in response to the roar- who knew what that could entail these days! While it could be as simple as someone crying in frustration of thirst, it could also be an enemy at the borders. No matter what the cause, it was her duty to ensure that it wasn't a threat. As she approached where the sound had come from, she eased a little. This spot was a common place for rogues to do their entry duels, and before her stood one such figure. He looked like he could be warm, but she could be quite wrong. To give him a mental disadvantage off the bat was a bad thing for her- made her cocky. Instead she approached to a normal dueling range and introduced herself. "I'm Aquila, and I'll take you on," she stood ready for the start at any moment.

Light Atago Man, your girl is tough! XD (1,3,3,1,1)
Nkera was not the least bit surprised when he was greeted by a female. He’d grown up in a pride where a lioness often took the role of warrior and they were just as fierce in the defense of the pride. His own mother had been a strong warrior whose level of skill he’d always admired and aimed to match so this situation made a lot more sense in his mind than the customs of some of the prides he’d met on his way to the desert, ones that often had constricting gender roles that the green-eyed lion failed to comprehend.
“Nkera.” he introduced himself briefly, quickly getting into position. It had taken some time to get used to the sandy ground and the relentless heat but the pale lion was confident that he’d have better luck today. Still, he might’ve been too eager because when he lunged forward, he didn’t feint or plan out this first move and his movements were terribly predictable and most likely easy to avoid.

Mogami ((She apparently has had a very bad day before this duel. O.o;;; *kidding* XD;;; )) Nkera... A good strong name. Aquila would have normally gone for the first move, but the male had beat her to it. Aquila watched his move carefully, expecting the black-and-white lion to feign to one side or another. He, however, was charging straight in. The lioness sidestepped simply, but would not let that be all that she did. She turned as she sidestepped, keeping herself facing him. He, however, would not exactly have that advantage- he'd have to alter his momentum to face her once more. Aqui made her move by going to give the male a solid shove to the flank, hopefully knocking his balance off. She kept her claws in, as this was a duel and shredding the rogue was not the idea. Still, if it connected, it should open his guard and allow her to land what blows she wanted, at least for a while. The lioness watched him carefully while quickly planning what her next attack would be, should she be given the chance.

Nkera winced as he took the blow to the side and his mouth opened in a silent snarl, feeling a couple of ribs scream out in pain. He was unusually quiet when fighting and today was no exception. He tensed as the lioness’ shove pushed his body to the side. It was a bad start of the fight but at least this was a move Nkera knew how to counter – though, obviously, knowing was only half the battle. The instant he felt his body being pushed from the side he instinctively gave in to that momentum and turned on the spot, one paw already in the air as he aimed at the lioness’ head. Claws sheathed, of course.

Mogami ((Sorry for lateness, life got hectic for a bit on me there. DX )) Good- her shove had sent him into something of a spin. It did mostly what she had hoped for- though it gave him an unanticipated opening as well. She should have seen it coming, that was the thought running through her head as she saw his paw coming, but it was too late. She took the blow to the cheek and across her face, grateful the challenger had had the sense to keep his claws in. She was momentarily forced to regain balance mid-battle, and did so by allowing herself to lower her body close to the sands. She struck out now quickly at one of his legs, putting as much power into the blow as she could muster. She hoped to knock him off balance, or better yet, put him on the ground. Though, she would have needed more power to succeed at the latter- she would have to make due with being off-balance, depending on whether her hit went through.

Light Atago No problem, I went through a really busy time as well. =) Nkera was motivated by the fact that his paw had connected with the lioness but he didn’t have much time to dwell on that pleasant feeling because she seemed to react remarkably quickly and crouched low in the sand. The pale lion would’ve liked to have seen her take a bit longer to recover but that would obviously not be the case and he was in awe at the way these desert lions seemed to be so comfortable on the unsteady ground. His eyes widened as he saw her go for his legs, knowing he would not have the time to prevent the attack fully. So he took it with a grunt, perhaps more surprised than he should’ve been at the strength she’d put into the blow, and then threw his body forward with the intent to hit her with his shoulder.

She was successful, despite the blow the lioness had taken to the head, she had connected with some power. What came next, though, was unforeseen. She felt a heavy blow to her own shoulder- the pale lion had managed to take the blow but still turn it into a ramming attack! A good move- it would have taken skill to pull off. And it would not be untrue to say she was surprised by that move.
She staggered back from the force of the blow, giving her shoulder a quick roll once she regained balance a little bit away from him- that would smart for a couple of days. The distance forced by the blow would have started the fight anew, and Aquila didn't waste any time launching herself forward once more, hoping to return the shove give to her.

Nkera stepped back as the lioness recovered much faster than he had hoped. He took the blow in its entirety and visibly winced under its pressure. He tried to push her away with one paw but failed completely and the front leg that was supporting him – bruised from her previous attack – buckled under his weight the moment she made contact. He cursed in his mind, his upper lip lifting in a silent snarl of frustration.
Scrambling for support, Nkera attempted to throw another hit her way but the sand kept shifting under his unsteady leg and he almost certain that, unlike hers, his attack would fail again. He could see the balance of the fight switching in her favor, hinting at a second defeat for the new recruit.

The lioness could tell her training had served her well. Not only her preparation to duel just as Nkera had done, but also training as a soldier. Aquila was sharper and quicker than she had been before, and the sands worked to her advantage now. Not only had she grown accustomed to the temperature fluctuations between day and night, but she'd also learned how to use the hot sands.
She knew that the next few moves, if not the fight, would most likely be in her favor, just from his buckling. Yes, she had the advantage now! His swipe was easy to avoid, a simple sidestep allowed her that... But his paw was now out there, beyond the main space below his body. She moved to grab it with her teeth.

Nkera winced as his paw missed. He could anticipate what would happen next by judging the lioness’ movements and it was nothing good as far as he was concerned. Not only did his attack fail but he was suddenly finding himself with his paw caught. In a last effort not give up, Nkera lifted his other front leg abruptly in order to slam it against the lioness’ head and release his paw. The moment his center of gravity shifted, however, his back legs slid on the unsteady surface and the pale lion felt his back quickly approaching the sand. He wasn’t an idiot. If she didn’t point it out first, Nkera knew he would have to admit defeat soon.

To say that this particular sudden turn of events had come expected to Aquila would be an outright lie. She had expected Nkera to attempt to free his paw, yes, but she had not expected him to do so with his other paw, nor for him to slip up and start to fall. His blow managed to graze her head, but it was too off-center to do any true damage. The lioness had to use this to her advantage- she would have her foe pinned. That wasn't entirely ideal, but it would signal the end of a fight, she supposed.
She kept his paw in her mouth for now and shuffled with the sands, lifting up her front paws to push on his chest. She dug her back paws into the sands as anchors, reared up, and aimed to push with all her weight. She released his paw half-way through the move and put all of her weight into the effort of pushing him down.
"That's enough," she said, certain that he too knew the duel was over. "I cannot give you entry to our lands today. You have potential, though." Her tone was flat. "If you truly seek to become a Firekin, return to our borders after more training." The lioness pulled back away from him and stood attentively- she would ensure that he at least headed into the roguelands before she would be on her way once more.

Light Atago Whee! Last post for Nkera! I don't know if you want to end it here or throw one last post. <3 <3 Nkera’s body went down under her weight, shaking for a few moments before his back legs finally gave out and allowed his back to slam against the sand. When she finally released his paw, the pale lion took it back with a curt nod and a resigned but obviously not very happy expression.
“I understand.” Nkera said simply, standing up slowly. He shook his body from head to tail, shaking the sand off his coat and quickly realized there were many bruised areas in his body that hurt but would probably hurt a lot more the next day. “I’ll be back.”
He nodded again as he turned on the spot and once again stepped away from the sands he wanted to call home.

"Very well," the lioness said as she watched his pale form go. Her mind went back slightly to her own joining duel as she watched him, before she snapped back to her senses and turned, heading back into the desert. She supposed she ought to find something to do in the pride's lands now that she had had her "break."Mogami ((Last little tag and finish~ :3 ))
