Nuru was happy. He was even humming a nice little tune while he skipped amongst the piles of bones beneath him. He almost tripped on one of the lion skulls, but managed to regain his balance and continue skipping. After a while he stopped skipping, but continued to hum and smile cheerfully. Even in this gloomy atmosphere he had managed to find some speck of happiness that made him want to sing. He was an odd Hyena wasn't he? Filled with glee in a world that thrived off of terror and anger, what had caused him to be such a way? Well today, that cause was his delightment of going out to hunt. He hadn't caught anything yet, nor seen a corpse around where ever he happened to wander; but he remained confident that he eventually would. After all, in this place of death, life would be found somewhere, wouldn't it?

Amanita trotted two steps behind his friend, but he felt no need to burst into song. He rarely did. Nuru was probably the happiest hyena he knew... He could act like a big puppy, but he was never mean so Amanita didn't mind. And no matter how absent minded he could be at times he had a huge advantage over the majority of the pride - he wasn't female.
Amanita was raised by his father, and he had inherited a healthy skepticism towards the fouler gender. They simply couldn't be trusted...
"How far do you want to run today," he asked, "Out in the roguelands?"
The hunting was better closer to the edges of the Elephant Churchyard, and better still outside their territory.

"Hmm... Pretty far." He said between hums. "I have a good feeling about today, so I want to look all over the place." Of course, he had a good feeling about everyday, it was just that this day was exceptionally good. Like instead of bringing back a corpse that had died two hours eariler, they'd find a live zebra to kill. Besides from that, Nuru liked exploring the roguelands. It had a lot of grass there, and he was well aware that other creatures liked to live in grassy places, not ones with bones littering it. Even if this was true, Nuru was not those other creatures, he was perfectly content living where he was currently. Or, anywhere for that matter. "We'll just come back when we get tired, right? Not anytime sooner?" He wanted to stay out of pack territory as long as he could, not because he didn't like the pack, he just was very curious in different surroundings.

Amanita nodded and settled into a pace he would be able to keep up for hours if he had to. A hunting trip that lasted all day would be perfect. Just the two of them and no interference from the rest of the pack. He'd talked to the other hunters about herd movement and knew there had been a lot of antelope not too far from their borders not long ago. Unless the stupid lions had scared them away they should be able to make an easy kill or two...
"Did you hear about the herd of antelope," he asked. "We could start with that and see how far they've moved."

"Alright!" Nuru chirped. He did recall hearing something about antelope when he was chatting with the other hunters. Though most of that conversation was "blah, blah, blah, antelope, blah, blah, blah, food." In Nuru's mind. So he was pretty happy to know that Amanita had actually heard what they were talking about. "They are..." He thought about his conversation again. Trying to remember the begining of their chatter before Nuru started falling asleep. "Near the border right?"

It was a pleasant surprise that Nuru had picked up that much. Amanita rounded a badly cracked elephant skull, wondering if anyone lived in there. There were always fights for the best skulls, but he had managed to hold on to a decent one for quite some time now. Unfortunately the war had thinned them out considerably, and elephant skulls in really bad shape were usually not inhabited at all. Even slaves could live in half decent skulls.
"Yeah," he said and nodded, "That's where they were seen last at least. I just hope they haven't moved closer to those stinking pridelanders. I'm not sure if I'm up for a hunt close to their turf."
The two of them might have a chance against an adolescent lion if they met one, but Masuko would gut them if they stirred up s**t with the lions. And aside from that, Amanita didn't feel like starting a new war.

"Mean either." He responded, eyes glued to the ground. He was watching where he placed his paws. Last time he had walked near this area Nuru had tripped and his jaw ended up hurting for a week. So to avoid that he watched where he stepped, not inticpating on there being a large skull of all things in his way. When his head bounced smashed against the elephant head, Nuru merely muttered a weak "Ow." He backed up a few feet before leaping over the tusks this beast once owned and carrying on humming like nothing had happened at all. "But if they are near the pridelanders, we have all day to hunt other animals. So it'll be all good." Required Nuru didn't accidently fall into a hole or something...

Amanita winced as he heard the hollow sound of skull meeting skull. Ouch! How did he do that? But Nuru didn't seem any worse for wear.
"Good thing no one lived in there," he said, "I tripped and made some noise outside a skull closer to the center of the pride when I was just a cub. The b***h who lived there nearly chewed my head off for that... Sometimes I think all females are raving lunatics..."
He didn't have the energy to start a full scale rant about unpredictable females, but Nuru had probably heard all his opinions on the matter anyway. 'Why females are evil, mean and complete nutcases' was a reoccurring theme in Amanita's rants.

Nuru continued humming, now practicing humming very softly, so his voice could not be heard. That way he could hum even well hunting. He was just so happy, and he trying his very best to spare Amanita the pain of having to listen to Nuru actually sing. He had been told by his mother time and time again that his singing voice was ear-piercing after all. "Well, some of them have to be good. Not all of them can be evil, right?" Sure most of them had... Anger issues... But there was always the odd one out. Like Nuru himself. All the females in his family used to make fun of him for being weird. He was sure that there was at least one girl Hyena out there who had experienced a situation like that.

CaliWolfe Sorry for being so late! We can probably end it after one more post from you if you want. "Hmm... Maybe not evil," Amanita said, "But I don't believe in good ones until I see one..."
He stopped to sniff the markings along the border. They were fresh, and there was no need to renew them, but he did anyway. He lifted his head and scanned the horizon for telltale signs of moving herds. There! A cloud of dust close to the horizon marked the location of a large herd. And luckily it hadn't moved any closer to the lions.
"Yes!" he exclaimed, "Looks like we're lucky, huh? Best not talk too much while we sneak up on them."
There was a time for talking and a time for stalking, and while Amanita could go on forever about the evils of female-kind, it didn't mix well with hunting. He started moving towards the tantalising dust cloud that he knew marked a herd of tasty and hopefully stupid prey.

Annchen Oh, it's fine! And alrighty then, we can do that. Nuru skipped happily behind Amanita, his humming quieting until it had seemed to have finally stopped. When his friend spotted the herd, Nuru couldn't help but do a stupid little dance while Amanita wasn't looking. It was such a good day! No, a great day! A wonderful, musical and mostly pain-free day which had already brought fortune to him in pounds of meat. Of course that meant Amanita had great fortune today, as did the rest of the pack! As the black, quite girlish hyena was about to burst into song, he somehow managed to convince himself otherwise, and instead turned mute. Although, one could probably feel his enthusiasum even from a distance. And Amanita could probably tell he was wearing that childish grin of his without even needing to turn around. Nuru continued foward with his jolly atmosphere, prepared to bring home a kill...
