Trying to get his father's attention was like... It was like... He may as well of been trying to fly. Much of it was his own fault: Niklas was convinced whatever his father had to do (and he figured there was always something that needed doing) was more important than whatever he had to say. Njal was busy, important, and his son respected that as much as he respected the lion in question. And even when his father did take the time for him, Niklas was never satisfied.
Sometimes he moped about it. Warlord cub or not, he was a cub still.
He was further discouraged by his wasted efforts digging. Vikings were finding more and more holes around the living area. Some knew it was one of Njal's boys. Some could only wonder, yet to catch him in the act. Most just didn't care. They had important things to worry about too.
He stuck close to the den that morning, digging away at the ground around it.

Njord had somewhat better success getting his father's attention, but that was arguably just because he was more adamant. As long as their father didn't look like he was doing something important, the cub was content to throw himself at the Warlord's feet and try to get some training or amazing story out of him.
Of course, more often than not he ended up thwacked and shooed away with some different activities he should get done recommended. But because he kept trying, every now and then Njord had victories!
The night before he'd had one such victory, when he had successfully roped their father into maybe ten whole minutes of play fighting. So Njord awoke in high spirits that morning.
Upon exiting the den he was greeted by the sight of his brother, digging. Njord already knew he was prone to such things, and wasn't surprised. The good thing about Niklas digging was sometimes he'd be distracted and easy to attack. With that in mind, Njord grinned, crouched low, and began to stalk closer on the off chance that he had yet to be spotted.

When one did the same thing over and over, one's mind would tend to wander. Niklas' was prone to going in several directions at once. A lot of activity for someone so young, and in many cases, someone who wasn't. This pride wasn't exactly teeming with genius lions.
All that pondering was more than enough to keep him busy and adequately distracted from the presence of a trouble-making brother.
Niklas kept right on digging, oblivious.

His little attack was going better than planned, because it seemed he had caught Niklas when he was already good and distracted. Perfect!
Once he had actually gotten close enough and was satisfied he could deliver successfully, Njord sprung up with a might. "ROOOO-waaar!" The latter part was less mighty, because as it turns out, he had all the right intention but not footwork.
Somehow Njord had managed to screw up a simple pounce, he landed a bit short, tumbled, and probably more forcefully rolled into his brother rather than properly pounced him. At least he should have enough momentum to make an impact, and maybe Niklas wouldn't notice Njord's failure.
