Jove should have taken the day off. After the adventures with his brother, the pup was left feeling like he had been hit by a car. His little body ached, and his limbs felt heavy, but lying in bed with his foxfires had not been nearly productive enough for the little ghost.

A normal student, when recuperating from a couple back-to-back dissipations, might have gone for a casual walk. Or grabbed something to eat at the cafeteria. They might have played videogames with friends and generally lazed about. But Jove... his idea of 'not staying in bed' happened to be 'lurking at the gym for fights'. And with the way he looked all bruised and banged up on his left side, nobody he knew was willing to fight him. It was making for a very dull day anyway.

He wordlessly grumbled to himself as he paced outside the gym, and then finally flopped down on the bench outside. Yeah, it was going to be a dull day.

To Mathias, coming across somebody who looked a little worse for wear was quite common among his kind. Wolpertingers loved to fight, and they did it often, with very little regard for self preservation or safety. Of course, being the runt of his litter meant that Mathias himself underwent the brunt of said fighting in his pack, and more then often came out on the losing side.

He had the scars to prove it.

So when he was making his way to the gymnasium in hopes of finding somebody who might be willing to help him with his oddly agressive nature and keen interest in sparring, it was of no surprise to him when he caught sight of a boil, one that looked like he had maybe gotten into a recent fight of his own.

Mathias didn't waste time on debating whether or not to approach. He clomped his way over on boots that gave him an extra three inches in height and stood in front of the boil, who looked like he might actually be his size.

"Guten tag. Du ist looking for spar, nah?" He looked like he was looking for a spar, otherwise, why would he be here?

"Maybe you vould like to spar vith me?" He sounded very hopeful.

Jove was surprised when he caught sight of the new student, not so much because this one was about his own size, with a similar style of clothing and a similar use of heeled boots, but because of the snot's boldness. When he had been a new student he had been nervous and shy in between fits of defensiveness, but this one just marched fearlessly over. And asked for a match.

Or... At least he thought that was what the student was asking. The pup's ears perked, and his head tilted slightly as he listened to the unfamiliar accent. Did he dare accept? Was it gentlemanly for him to fight a new student? Although his freshly beaten up state would even the odds a bit...

After a second of long staring and internal debating, Jove nodded and darted into the gym.

Waiting for the other student to reply, Mathias's wings twitched nervously at his back, adjusting themselves, flaring slightly, folding back down. This boil looked a bit worse for wear, and the wolpertinger was beginning to wonder if he had made a mistake in asking him for a spar. As the other boil continued to look at him without answering, Mathias even turned a glance over his shoulder, half expecting somebody to be standing there looming over him from behind.

Nothing there. He frowned, turning his attention back towards Jove, mouth opening to offer an apology, baring just the hint of tiny fangs, when the other boil nodded at him, stood up, and took off into the gym without a word.

"Das war seltsam...." he gave his head a small shake, as he stared after the strangely silent boil before following him into the gym himself. He tried not to think about it too much, however, in favor of instead letting excitement mount inside of him at the prospect of yet another good fight to be had.

"Vould you like to begin?" He asked, figuring it was only polite considering the other ones current state.

Jove glanced over his shoulder once or twice, as though making sure he still had an opponent, but when the time came to actually attacking... He shook his head. Then he tilted it with an "after you" sort of gesture. It was only the gentlemanly thing to do.

The other boils silence was...different. Certainly not a bad thing, no, but simply not what Mathias had become accustomed to since arriving. Most of his opponents before this had been quite chatty, in some cases even annoyingly so. This boils quiet demeanor, however, was quite refreshing in comparison. Though it did make Mathias feel a little bit like he aught to fill that silence, because maybe the other boil was of a species that just couldn't speak, and maybe it would be rude of Mathias to assume that meant he preferred silence as well?

Ohhhh...what to do? Well, he could try polite conversation, at least! A few light questions with yes or no answers to make it easier for the other to confirm with a negative or positive gesture.

It seemed appropriate. He'd try to fit in a few questions as things went along.

With the permission to begin granted to the wolpertinger, he felt his lips twitch up into a smile, while his red eyes narrowed. "As you vish then." He stated simply, with a sharp nod, and then sped forward, wasting little time in beginning the spar with a feint from one set of black claws before slashing in with the other set instead.

Jove either seemed unaware of the other boil's "to talk or not to talk" dilemma, or he was just taking it as a matter of course. His silence had received all sorts of reactions during his time at the school. Some tentativeness was much preferred to the bullying he had received during first year, being small and nearly uncommunicative made him a ready target.

Still he had grown up strong, even if growing up didn't exactly mean... growing.

He jumped back to avoid part of the attack, but when he lunged in for his own, his left leg buckled under his slight weight. He was definitely in poor shape, and far from able to attack with full strength. Instead of a crushing chomp, his sharp teeth barely grazed his opponent.

Mathias was fairly quick to move when the other boil lunged at him with teeth ready to chomp down, managing to avoid it both by luck and with a bit of speed on his side. Who ever heard of a slow wolpertinger, after all? Still, a fair bit of teeth grazed against him before he managed to pull away completely, and he took a couple of hopping steps back, assessing his opposition.

"So you are liking to bite?" He finally spoke, accent slightly thicker now with the adrenaline associated with fighting coursing through his veins. He smiled then, flashing fangs that were by no means large, but were prominent enough to be noticeable from a distance. "This is okay, I am same." He barked out a laugh and jumped forward a little to get closer once more, eyes roaming over the side of the other boil that looked more beaten up.

"You are quite hurt already, nah? Good to fight anyvays, vill make you feel better." At least, if Matty were in the same situation, he knew it would make him feel better. He had to assume others were the same.

Jove took advantage of the other boil's approach, letting him get close. He had nothing to hide. Even if he was suffering a slight handicap, he could still fight. If he didn't push himself to his limit, how could he learn his true limits?

Besides. Fighting did make him feel better. It made him feel alive, which was quite remarkable for the little ghost. He gave his opponent a slight nod, barely more than a head-tilt of acknowledgement. Perhaps he had found a like-mind? Someone who similarly wanted to get stronger, despite being so little?

The pup too another staggering step, his left side turning his usual light-footed prance into a limp. But he could fix that. Sending out invisible ghostly tendrils to reach for the ground, he put his weight on those instead. That was his advantage, he had his ghostly ability to make up for when the fragile ghost-flesh and ghost-bones failed him. The part remembered how to be alive, and how to bruise and break, it could be aided by the part that had learned to be whatever he needed it to be.

This time when he lunged, he caught a bit more in his teeth.

Like minded indeed. Mathias had spent his entire life fighting to prove that his size meant very little, though more often than not they were scraps that he had lost. He had gone off to school because his parents thought that it would help him, that he would find his true strengths that would make up for his small size. A runt by wolpertinger standards, and their standards weren't exactly large to begin with, he was more than willing to prove to anybody that being small did not mean being a pushover.

This boil he was sparring against now seemed to be much the same. Despite his obvious injury, he was putting up more of a fight then Mathias seemed able to handle, and that thought alone brought an even larger grin to the small boils face, his ears and nose both twitching in excitement. When the ghost lunged forward and sunk his teeth into Matty's arm, he let out a small hiss of pain, but the smile remained. This was what he lived for, after all! The fight, the pain that came with it, the bruises that were left as a reminder to do better next time, the scars which were more permanent reminders of much the same, and the soreness of muscles to let him know he had put in as much effort as his small body could withstand. He loved it all. He could do this all day long and never get tired of it.

Taking a jump back and attempting to yank his arm free, he stumbled a little when the large heel of his boot hit the ground the wrong way, leaving him well open for another attack.

He would welcome such a thing.

What a vicious little student, it was like he actually enjoyed getting hurt. Wasn't there a word for that, enjoying the sensation of pain?

Jove had not always enjoyed fighting so much, when struggling for your life it was a terrifying affair and his bloodthirsty search for opponents was born from a desire to get stronger, and avoid the same failures he had faced in the past. Yet his ghostly body sometimes remembered living things of it's own volition, and the rush of adrenaline from physical competition was one of those things. Here in the gym it felt good to fight, even if he was on the receiving end of the beatings.

Suddenly the little ghost saw his opponent falter, and stepped forward himself. His invisible tendrils sharpened to raking points, but when his weakened left leg gave out again they stabbed straight downward to catch his fall. It appeared more like an awkward stagger than an attack like he had attempted.

Mathias of course didn't know what Jove was thinking, and if he did he might have set him straight. Enjoying pain was very different from embracing it, from believing it was something to learn and grow from, from accepting it as a part of his everyday life and instead of running from it, barreling into it headlong to prove that he could withstand it. There was no deep seated pleasure to be derived from it, only a sense of triumph any time he was able to face it with a smile, as though it meant nothing.

Though it was pretty easy to see why anybody would believe him a masochist. He did sort of look the part at that moment.

He thought it fortunate that the other boil had seemed to stagger, possibly having difficulty because of his injuries, just shortly after he himself had nearly fallen. He took it as a chance to jump forward and swipe out with sharp claws once more, though he actually really wanted to give the other a bite of his own in payback for earlier.

He could bide his time and wait for the right moment to present itself, however. There was really no reason to rush these things. Not when he was enjoying himself this much, a fact that was made a little less obvious once his smile finally slipped away and his brows furrowed in concentration.

It was time to take this more seriously.

Jove made a little growling noise, but he couldn't jump back in time to avoid the small attack. The best he could do was raise an arm defensively to take the blow.

Either this student was toying with him, and he wouldn't put it past someone who seemed so eager to fight, or he was just weak. If it had been a fellow third year student, the blow would have had him on his knees. Well, more on his knees than he was already.

He used his invisible tendrils to test his footing, he didn't dare try another attack before he was ready.

The growl was a little surprising, even if it was a small one. It was still enough to make Mathias pause, and take a step back, giving himself and the other like-sized boil a fairly wide berth. It was more out of cautiousness than anything, because he did not know quite what to expect. Was this some precursor towards an attack that would leave him splayed out and near dissipation on the floor? It was best not to let such a thing happen. He didn't want to end things so quickly, if he could manage.

The ghost boil, however, seemed to be having some amount of difficulty. While Mathias really wanted to attack him again, he found himself hesitating, waiting for the other boil to make a move, while wondering if he was perhaps too injured to do so. A part of Mathias admired him for continuing on with the state that he looked to be in, though. A large part of him hoped that they could keep going.

He had to bite his tongue to keep himself from asking if the ghost was okay. Back where he came from, that was just not a question that was brought up during a spar. You just assumed they were okay, until they very obviously weren't. As the other boil was still upright, there was no reason to assume anything.

The hesitation was all Jove needed, he sprung forward and lashed out with his invisible tendrils. It would feel like sharp claws, and yet look like nothing at all but a staggering lunge forward on the ghost's part.

It was nothing like the damage he was capable of, but Jove felt the thrill of success. He could still keep going, even like this. He bared his teeth in a grin, growling once again. One day he would kick those Hunters' asses. All of them.
