[HH 1v1] Hunter or Hunted? (Manyara & Madison)

Manyara had heard about this 'haunted house' place. It was a labyrinth laced with Insanity, it could only be accessed by stumbling into it from the cursed Halloween school - she had every reason to stay away from it.

But she had one very good reason to go, and that was the reported presence of Hunters. Her desire for vengeance burned in her, not bright like a flame but low and sullen, like acid eating away. Home was a wasteland, only worth saving because of what it had been, and what it meant to the Clans. It was a symbol. But she couldn't bite the Titans there, not really.

She could bite Hunters.

So the Horseman wandered, glaring sharply at any student who dared come within range of her as she stalked around the campus, waiting and willing the place to spawn around her...

Until she rounded a corner, and there it was. Or there she was. She let out her breath in a low, pleased hiss and dropped to all fours, taking a deep breath and seeking the scent of something human.

Madison's time was running out. The Hunter stepped out of the portal and into the Haunted House and summoned her weapon immediately, tension evident in her frame as the swords in their belt settled around her waist. For everything she'd learned from Gale and Mei, it had been a bust as far as her immediate needs went. And she didn't want to keep Caelius waiting.

So she was reduced to this - coming here, trying not to breathe too much fog, and hoping the way this place seemed to react to will was enough to bring one of the pet monsters or a Horseman into her grasp. And then, hopefully, she'd be able to take it down.

Madison drew one sword grimly, then headed for the nearest door, pushing it open a crack and peeking through.

Manyara's nose twitched, and a slow, toothy smile spread over her face. Something was stirring - something that smelled of warm, hot blood and of FEAR. The FEAR was too tamed for an ordinary human, too quiescent; she couldn't smell it. It was either a Hunter or another damned student. She'd have been happy to bite either, but Lord Death's warning made her grin turn to a grimace. Ugh. Being dependent on such weak, foul things for survival...

The faint creak of a door drew Manyara closer - and to her delight, she saw the telltale flicker of a white coat. Oh yes. Yes. Hunter. And facing away from her.

She charged, her bare feet thudding on the floor before she pushed off and leapt at the Hunter's turned back.

At the sudden sound of running footsteps behind her, Madison had only enough time to curse her own stupidity before the attack landed. Or, more accurately, the attacker landed. She let out a strangled yelp and slammed her elbows back, trying to jab them into the belly of her attacker. She felt claws, teeth- <********>, what was it?! She couldn't tell-

Manyara opened her mouth to shriek in triumph, but it turned into an aborted whoof! as the Hunter's attack connected, driving all the air out of her lungs. Her grip slackened for a moment, and it was enough for the Hunter to tear free, sending Manyara tumbling to the ground.

The Horseman dropped down into a low crouch, staring up at the Hunter with pure hatred in her eyes. No words were needed. Only action. Only fists, feet, elbows, knees, teeth. She leaped forward again, this time coming in low, aiming for the leg, She felt her fingers touch and snapped her head forward, trying to sink her teeth into vulnerable muscle. She caught only the smallest bit of flesh - but that flesh was hers.

Horseman- Madison grinned right back at the crouching thing before her. Good. Very good. She could see the tell-tale gleam of a crystal tucked in the folds of the creature's clothing. Her coat was now tattered across the back and she could feel the fabric sticking to fresh wounds, but the prize she wanted was in sight. Maybe this place wasn't so bad after all.

And then the Horseman lunged at her, and she jumped back not quite fast enough. "********!" she yelped as the thing LITERALLY tore a strip off her leg, cloth coming away with flesh attached. Not much, true, and a bad smack into a sharp corner would've done about as much damage, but the sight of the Horseman eating a bit of her...

Ugh.

She jabbed at the creature, but the thing scrambled to one side in a movement that was quite frankly disturbing. Nothing so scrawny - no, emaciated - should be capable of movement that swift.

Manyara swallowed the bit of flesh with a delighted snarl, then scrambled to one side as the Hunter lunged for her. "Tassssty," she laughed, her voice low and dangerous. "Eat you up, drink your blood. Take you home for worm foot. Keep you just alive enough. You know we can do it." Her eyes crescented with feral delight. "You know. Hunter."

She leapt forward again, but this time the Hunter was ready for her, leaping away like a dancer.

She did know. All too well. For a moment, her stomach twisted as she remembered the Lair full of bodies, what she'd carried out, what it had smelled like- and then, blessedly, the Horseman sprang towards her again, and she let movement and adrenaline purge the memory from her mind.

The memory, but not the sense of justice owed. The Insanity blossoming over the home of the Horsemen wasn't payment enough for what they'd done. "That was then. This is now - your power is broken, you little b***h-" She lunged, and while the Horseman tried to evade Kouki broke through, sapping away FEAR along with the cut that opened along one emaciated arm.

Manyara snarled at the feel of the blade biting her flesh, but the anger was a balm, not a bane. It was good for them to struggle. Challenge only made everything sweeter. "We rise again," she hissed, summoning her own weapon with a crack. She flung the bolas in one smooth motion.

Madison tried to dodge, but the bolas caught one leg and wrapped, nearly tripping her; she stumbled, badly, and felt something tweak in her ankle. <********> But Kouki was in her hands, the runes humming. So close. Then the Horseman would see what she was made of.

And hopefully the answer wasn't lots and lots of blood.

She tore the bolas free and flung them away, then stabbed at her adversary. Kouki tasted blood again, just a little bit, but that didn't matter because a long stream of FEAR came away with the blade. The serpent-sword hissed in utter triumph as the runes brightened to full potency.

She lunged the instant the bolas hit, but the Hunter fended her off with a quick stab. Manyara withdrew for an instant, then veered to the side and dove for the Hunter's back once more. The Hunter pivoted, but Manyara sank her teeth into the shoulder, staining that pretty coat bright red.

Madison screamed, and a bit of actual, genuine terror was audible in the sound. "Kouki!" she shrieked, and released her weapon's FEAR. At once, the blades rose, all four of them, and descended to bite at Madison's attacker. At the first hit, the Horseman tore free, taking some of Madison's shoulder with her, but the blades pursued her until their FEAR was expended. They had just enough to return to her hands before the runes went dark again.

Madison's breathing was raspy, but her voice was triumphant. "Don't you ever touch me again, b***h." God, her shoulder hurt. She could feel the sticky warmth of her own blood beginning to soak what was left of her coat.

Manyara staggered under the sudden assault, whipping up her head and screaming pain and fury at the blades - they'd told her that the Hunters had tamed FEAR for their own use, but she hadn't truly believed it until this moment. She lunged for a hilt as the swords returned to their mistress, but missed.

But it seemed the swords took a moment to return. She lunged immediately, moving again to grapple with the Hunter, this time delivering a punishing blow to the Hunter's side.

Madison saw a blur as the Horseman moved, and then she was being battered by those emaciated limbs. She fought back, clawing at the Horseman and driving every strike she could into the creature's thin body - thin, yes, but absolutely not frail. She smashed Kouki's hilt into something, and the Horseman scrambled away with a shriek of pain.

But Madison followed, striking across a trailing leg, and the Horseman snarled in absolute fury as the blade opened up the ankle. The foot flopped uselessly, the Achilles tendon severed.

Grimly, Madison dropped Kouki's blades and dropped down on top of the half-disabled Horseman, slamming the thing's shoulders to the ground. Still she fought, spitting and hissing and snapping wildly at Madison's face like a rabid dog until a blow to the side of the Horseman's head made her eyes lose focus.

"Game over. I win," Madison said, her voice cold as ice. She reached down and tore the Distortion crystal free from its setting, then delivered one more blow to the side of the Horseman's head. The creature went limp.

In one swift movement, Madison retrieved the nearest blade and pierced the Horseman's heart; the body under her convulsed before dissipating, leaving her alone with Kouki and a slick of blood that had now soaked her entire left side. The shoulder wound, she realized, dizzy.

But she had what Caelius wanted.

"Deus... ex machina," she breathed, and vanished.
