When it had been suggested that a Firekin or two should show the rogue, Yevir, to the outpost, it hadn't taken long for Kalimoto to volunteer herself. Anything was better than standing on guard duty for days on end with no one but an infuriatingly patient Shaak, a chatty Heti and a sheepish Vesta as company. Any excuse to be away from them and out in rogue lands was a blessing. And maybe they'd even run into some proper Nergui and not some fool rogues who had made her think they'd been the savages.
Still, one of those 'fool rogues' had managed to best her in a duel and now, for her haste, she had a bruised ego and an ear striped with drying blood.
She shook her head for the umpteenth time in an attempt to make the wounded ear feel more 'normal' - though it made little difference.
With a snort, she looked across at Yevir and at Hraga (who had also opted to come) and narrowed her eyes a little. "I don't think you'll make a very good Firekin." The statement was grumbled and bitter and probably not one worth taking seriously. Still, if he didn't improve, then he'd never earn his place.

Yevir had been quiet throughout the entire trip. Kira was gone- something he wasn't entirely sorry for, but at the same time, she was one of his own people. It felt strange not to be shadowing her. They'd been able to put aside their own personal disagreements for the trip, but...
His eyes flicked upwards. This 'firekin' woman had been sore ever since she'd lost to Kira. He supposed he could have alleviated her sore ego with the assurance that Kira was one of the best...but decided against it. "I don't have much of a choice," he said flatly. "My people are already scattered, I don't intend to lose the only one I've got left."
Hraga, too, had been quiet. Although for a different reason. He'd been attempting to determine just how far into the trip they were, and whether or not they were likely to encounter his niece at the end of it. "You'll still have to best one of us for a spot in the pride," he said, his nod mirroring Kalimoto's. "After all, being red isn't the only thing we're looking for."
Yevir rolled his eyes. "I suspect the nergui are not so scrutinizing. What should you do if they outnumber you? Even well trained warriors can be overwhelmed."

Kalimoto growled low in her throat. She had decided that she didn't like this rogue, nor his 'friend' who had set off for the heart of the Firekin pride. The whole situation reeked of dishonour and her need to sate her feelings of 'being hard done by' were strong enough to last weeks...or months.
Most likely months.
"If the Nergui let in lions like you then we have nothing to fear," she spat back. "If a lion can't fight, that's a weakness in the chain. If the chain breaks, what do you think will happen then? If there's a vulnerability like that, we can use it as an advantage and claim an easy victory." She wrinkled her snout in distaste. "We believe in quality over quantity."
She huffed, pushing ahead, maybe she should have stayed after all. Maybe it would have been easier to listen to Shaak prattle on and on about watching one's temper.
Still, at least Hraga seemed agreeable. She'd cling to that as some small recompense.
"Besides, we haven't seen any of those cowardly Nergui in weeks. The stupid bastards probably ran off to pick on small, weak prides like the one you came from. I say, if they don't show their faces soon, we should go take the battle to them. Firekin have their reputation to keep, isn't that right, Hraga?"
She dug her paws hard into the sand, coming to a halt; lifting her head to test the air for any untoward scents. Still nothing.
"How much further is it to the outpost anyway? I still don't see anything." She squinted against the sun, trying to pick out any markers amongst the dunes.

Although Hraga had to agree with Kalimoto's assertion, Yevir's words did trouble him some. He didn't like to think that the nergui were the sort that would simply throw warrior after warrior upon them. Firekin could take down many, but could they be overwhelmed by sheer numbers? He liked to think not. But they wouldn't have been the first pride to underestimate how savage the nergui could be.
"It might be true that the nergui take whomever they can get. But they would still have to trek that force out across the desert," he said. It had been the key feature that had served the firekin for generations. Both as a warring force, and an army at home. Not many could survive out in the heat, and if the nergui wanted to overwhelm them, they would have to get their forces passed one hell of a natural barrier.
Yevir nodded. He supposed that was at least true. "Then I suppose we'll have to hope you never run out of sand." As he said this, he kicked a small plume of it as he walked. Miserable place. Why had Kira picked here of all the places they could have run to?
Leaving Yevir to his thoughts, Hraga kept pace with Kalimoto. "It shouldn't be too far now. Maybe another couple of miles. We'll start to feel the sands get a bit more flat over the next couple of dunes."

(( So, I totally need to apologise ): I took so long on this and I really have no excuse except that I got completely tangled up with Guild Wars, in any case, with my pvp tournament and other big goal now done/almost done, I have more free time. I'll catch you on AIM to do more plot talk and such very, very soon.))
Kalimoto rolled her eyes, growing impatient with the dumb rogue's assertions. Deserts didn't just disappear. If anything they grew bigger. The Nergui could not come to them in force and they had already learned that. Maybe that was why they were being left alone now. Retreated before I even got the taste of battle, she thought with a low hiss.
Still, Hraga's reply to the location of the outpost did detract from her bad mood a little. The sooner they got there the sooner they could get back. And hey, maybe there'd be some other dumb rogues there she could smack around to make herself feel better.
True enough, beyond the dunes the sand evened out and they were able to hasten their pace. "I hope you like it at the outpost," she scoffed, "you'll be there a long time." Maybe forever. Poor lost soul, too weak to be accepted to the Firekin but too foolish to ever give up.
Foolish, or afraid?
"So what do you think, Hraga? If the Firekin mounted their own force to take out the Nergui in their own lands, would you volunteer? You look like you could pack a punch...for a guard, that is."
