They'd been traveling for days now, heading in the direction he was certain led towards the sea. At least, that's what he thought. The information had come from a reliable source after all. Well, mostly reliable source... Fine, semi-reliable. At least 45%. In retrospect, that wasn't terribly reliable at all, but it was an adventure either way, and that was what really counted in the end. Of course, he did want to see the sea someday, but the journey was half the experience, if not more!
They were just coming over a rise when he heard something. "Hold on," Kumi said as he paused, holding out a paw to silently tell Feli to stop. His ears perked up, listening intently. Water, in a way it sounded like the crash of a waterfall, but it was more rhythmic instead of a constant drone. Like a magnified version of water lapping the edges of a lake. This was it, he was sure of it! He turned to his companion with an excited grin on his maw.
"Are you ready?" he asked, his tone dripping with an almost cub-like exuberance. He certainly was!

"Only one way to find out!" he exclaimed and, flashing a grin at her, he took off at a run towards the sound.
A few more rises and the grasses began to give way more and more. Kumi started to feel the slip of sand under his paws until... He skidded to a stop at the top of a sandy hill, overlooking a long stretch of beach before them. And beyond that... He had never seen the like. Everything was blue, as far as the horizon and then farther if that was even possible. Gulls flew in the air, shells littered parts of the beach, but it was the water that held him captivated. It swelled back and forth, like the beating of a heart, the water rushing the beach in white-capped waves before crashing, only to be pulled back again.
Gods, it was magnificent. Suddenly remembering his companion, Kumi glanced over his shoulder, eyes seeking Feli. His grin had grown softer with reverence over the view, losing the general excitement, but replaced with awe and wonder. His breath came quickly after his mad dash, but he didn't seem a bit put out by it. "Isn't it beautiful?"

She was speechless and that made him chuckle a bit as his head turned back to gaze over the waters. "I've heard of a god that watches over these waters, and another for all the creatures that live within. And fish the size of elephants. Can you imagine?" Whether any of that was really true or not, he wasn't entirely sure. He hadn't seen it, after all, but someone had. Or someone lied, but what did it matter? Life was far more interesting if you believed in such fantastic things.
"Well, the day is hot and I don't think it'll be getting any cooler any time soon." That was all he said before he headed straight for the water, curious about if what he'd heard about a bitter, salty taste were true. Perhaps he'd fins some interesting beach creature to study. Either way, he'd have fun just playing in the crashing waves. Would she join him? Well, that would be up to her, now wouldn't it? He'd just have to wait and see.

Kumi stopped just far enough in for the water to wash over his paws, almost up to his knees when the waves came in and then almost not at all when they went out, pushing at tugging at him each time. Finally he had found a word for the feelings that seemed to constantly flow through him now, waves. The ebb and flow of urging to move on, see something else, something new. To learn, to observe, to interact, to experiment, they pulled and tugged at him, begging to walk into deeper waters. The shore had safety, as his pride had, at least of a sort. The world without was fraught with dangers, as the sea was, no doubt. And still the waves tugged at him, pulling him another step forward and another, drawing him deeper.
So lost in his thoughts, he'd completely forgotten about his companion until she cried out, sputtering. His head snapped back around to catch her spitting out water, he blinked when she exclaimed that it tasted horrible. Doubting Thomas, Kumi dipped his head to try it himself. Salty, much too salty and it went up his nose. Wouldn't be at all good for quenching a thirst. He recalled someone mentioning it might help keep cuts from festering, but at the moment couldn't recall where... from... His musing about medical practice trailed off as he watched Feli continue to wade out into the water, farther and... Farther.
"Feli... Feli, I think you're going out to far." It wasn't light a playful like his voice usually was, and a small frown marred his features. Drowning, dangerous sea creatures, he'd seen enough death in his life, he didn't really feel like risking adding her to the count.

She couldn't hear him, Kumi's ears swiveled forward to catch her question. She wanted him to come in as well, farther than his simple wading. No, it wasn't a good idea. He was a fair swimmer, any lion worth his salt from where he'd grown up would be. But this... This water was different. It was deeper, far more treacherous. He didn't want to risk it and was growing steadily panicked as his companion continued to do so.
"Come back!" he called out louder, hoping this time she'd hear it. And then he saw it, a gray fin brought in on a wave, the bearer of the fin heading straight for Felallt. It was surely just a fish, but... the fin was large. It would have to be a big fish. Kumi's eyes grew wide and he ran towards her, stopping when the water reached his chest.
"Feli come back now!" he yelled, knowing he shouldn't let his concern show so much. It would just scare her and send her into a panic, but he didn't know how else to get her to come back immediately.
