VERSIERSEL

It wasn't that 'Siersel didn't want to spend time with her brothers and twin, it was that she spent so much time with them that they were booooooring. Even her sister. Which was saying something. So the white and gold cub had decided to poke around the pride and find someone new to play with.

She didn't want any stupid thralls this time. Just some other young freeborn, like herself. Then she wouldn't have to worry about...stuff. And hopefully it wouldn't be too boring!

So the young lioness was on the prowl, looking for a potential playmate.

User ImageThe very instant that Aska and her siblings had been capable of moving on their own, they'd been made to understand that they were no ordinary cubs. They were the cubs of the daughter of the High Priestess, Yakuti, and they were to carry themselves with the dignity and grace of their station in life. This had been told to them by Brynja, who really did act more their mother than Yakuti did, but it wasn't something that the little ones wasted time dwelling on.

No, Aska was far too busy lording her bloodlines over any youth her age that would take the time to listen - and even those who didn't take the time. She was a mean little thing, graceful even for her young age, and the thralls of the pride had taken to giving her a wide berth. She was young and proud and pretty, and she would not tolerate insolence from those deemed beneath her.

...everyone was considered beneath her.

Grooming herself in a small spot of sunshine, Aska was oblivious to anyone who might approach.

Aha! There! Another cub about her own age! Perfect. Someone that she didn't know and therefore couldn't be bored of. Yet.

'Siersel sauntered over to the other lioness who seemed absolutely oblivious. Well, htere were ways to fix that. The gold and white cub moved so that she was standing squarely in front of the other female. Then she spoke.

"Let's play." It was less an exclamation than a demand. Versiersel wanted a playmate and this was the first eligible person she'd found all morning.

Aska paused mid-lick and slowly turned her eyes towards the interloper. She didn't move a muscle otherwise, aside from the slow narrowing of her eyes. How utterly annoying. Play? Couldn't the other cub she how busy she was?

Aska lowered her paw and gave the other lioness a frown. Perhaps if she'd asked nicely, Aska might have been bothered to play. As it was, Aska didn't budge. She merely sniffed and gave a very high-and-mighty sounding, "I don't want to."

Icy blue eyes narrowed as the other cub studiously ignored her for several long moments. She didn't want to? This child who was no older than herself was acting...acting like an old lion!

"Oh, I see," 'Siersel observed. "I thought you were a cub, like me. But I guess you're really an old hag." Only elders laid in the sun all day doing nothing. Everyone else had some sort of job to do, and cubs were, well, they generally had better things to do than just laying around doing nothing.

She watched carefully to see if her words had their intended effect.

Aska snorted, and loudly. It wasn't a pretty, dainty little snort like she'd heard so many well-behaved females make. It was an ugly, scoffing snort that almost hurt as it came out of her. An old hag, hah! Hardly.

Aska debated slapping the other youth, just to show her her place, or merely ignoring her. Finally she rose to her feet, swished her tail, and graced the intruder with the coolest look she could manage.

"Fine. We can play. Pretend. I'm the high priestess, and you're my thrall. It will be such fun."

'Siersel returned the girl's green gaze coolly as the other finally got to her feet. But her own expression grew dark as the brown cub described the game she wanted to play.

"That's stupid," 'Siersel scoffed. "It would be more fun to play reavers. Or warlord and first speaker. Or rogues. Why would anyone want to play a thrall?"

It cut her in her pride, the intimation that Versiersel was somehow lesser than this nameless cub. Sure, her mom had no ambition for herself, but Skinnende wanted all of her children to grow up strong and take their places in the pride. 'Siersel, for one, had no intention of disappointing her mother.

"Well, because I won't be a thrall, and I won't be a reaver. I guess we could play Warlord and First Speaker, or Warlord and High Priestess, but I'm not going to be the Warlord. That's what boys play as, and I'm no boy."

Aska was heavily insinuating that the stranger cub was boyish, and a sharp smile curved her lips.

"My grandmother is the High Priestess of the pride right now. What does your grandmother do?"

The white and gold cub's tightened as the other girl continued to denigrate. Sure, 'Siersel played plenty of rough and tumble game with her brothers but that didn't make her boyish in the least. It meant that she actually knew what those paws and claws were for, unlike some who were content to waste their day away sunbathing.

"We could play either," the cub pressed on, unwilling to let an opportunity to play with someone unrelated pass without at least trying. "But I don't know why you care what grandparents do, they're oooooooold."

Which was a way to avoid saying that her grandmother was, like her mother, a simple Freeborn lioness.

Aska leveled a narrow-eyed look in the other's direction.

"Well, whatever. I'm Aska. If we're playing, you can call me High Priestess Aska." She tossed back her braid and glanced haughtily around. "I'm going to curse the Warlord - that's you - because he - you - think that females should be reavers."

It sounded like something that could be true to life, really.

"So what now?"

It was probably becoming clear that Aska didn't really know how to play.

The lighter cub considered the scenario Aska had laid out for them. This was actually somewhat interesting. Aside from the cursing. She didn't care for that idea.

"It's stupid to curse me for something like that. Obviously females should be Reavers - there's nothing that makes us - them - weaker or slower or anything compared to males." Okay, Versiersel wasn't entirely certain where to go with this either. But if this was the game, where she was supposed to oppose whatever Aska said, well, she'd play it. Gladly.

She wasn't really sure that she liked the other lioness, but at least she wasn't playing with her brothers for once.

"Oh," Aska sniffed before falling silent, pinning the other cub with a look. It was one that clearly said, You're one of those. She'd heard her family talking, and it really was obvious that the family strongly believed that females should not be reavers and were much better suited to other tasks, such as healing or crafting.

Truthfully, Aska didn't really know much about what it all meant, but she was quite a sponge when it came to listening. She hadn't ever been a part of any conversation regarding pride hierarchy, but she'd made the opinions of her mother, grandmother and great-uncle her own.

Aska was almost certain she didn't like this pale female, and it became rather obvious when Aska said, "That's something a filthy outlander would say."

She'd heard Thorgrim say those exact words, and right now she was repeating them verbatim, even though she didn't actually know if the cub was old blood or not.

Aska was quiet for a long time and 'Siersel didn't much care for the look on the other cub's face as she stayed quiet. She had no way of knowing what was going on in the other lioness' head but one thing was certain - Versiersel was probably not going to like it. In fact, she was rapidly coming to the conclusion that she probably did not like Aska very much. This kind of sucked, as it meant that she would not have someone unrelated to play with, but at least none of her siblings gave her weird looks like that.

Pale eyes narrowed when the darker lioness did finally respond. An outlander? Sure she wasn't from one of the old bloodlines, Versiersel knew that her grandmother had come from elsewhere before settling in the Stormborn and having cubs here, but it had always been something of an intellectual knowledge. Nothing that really had a bearing on what the white and gold lioness should choose to do. But something in Aska's tone said that it did matter, that it was something 'Siersel could never escape.

That was true, in a way, but it didn't mean that she had to look down on 'Siersel for it!

"Well, maybe outlanders know something we don't!" she retorted at last.

Aska's face remained expressionless for a long, long stretch of time. She merely stared at Versiersel with hooded eyes and a look of disbelief etched on her youthful face. She wasn't sure whether to laugh outright or to squelch the sudden surge of laughter that bubbled up in her throat.

In the end, there was no way that Aska could stop the laughter that warbled forth, loud and obnoxious. She laughed and laughed and laughed until her lungs burned and tears dampened the fur of her cheeks.

"L-like what," Aska stuttered in between barely-stifled giggles. "What could they possibly know?!"

'Siersel rolled her pale eyes in exasperation at Aska's willful blindness. "How can we know," she countered, "if we don't know what it is they know that we don't?" The words came out a bit garbled, but the white and gold lioness decided that enough of her point had goten across. It had sounded better in her head, but that was besides the point.

"Besides, without outlanders, everyone in the pride would be related to everyone else and all the cubs would be bad." The cub didn't actually understand how the one led to the other, but her mother had mentioned it once so it was obviously true.

Aska was just too stubborn to admit that outlanders were a good thing.
