It was a difficult trek up the mountain, but between herself and her mate, Buyu knew that there was no stopping them once they decided to investigate the supposed volcano that rested in the midst of these abandoned lands of evil reputation. Counting on the fact that the evil here was more concerned with lions, the little dog had convinced herself it would be perfectly safe.

They were only a few minutes into their explorations of the caves and they didn't seem to be getting anywhere especially interesting very fast. When they arrived at a section where the path split into two options, they paused.

"What do you think?" she murmured, looking back and forth.

Less determined but perhaps more curious about the lands, Uokotaji had been all too happy to follow along. He was happy to be moving slowly through the caves, not believing they would be completely abandoned and knowing if they were to come up to something mean they were not a good size to defend themselves-- not to mention they weren't exactly well-practiced at mountain climbing.

When they arrived at the split, he sniffed at the air and then along the ground.

"Hard to say," he responded, "They might both end up in the same place."

He had never been to a volcano before but he had a guess of what it might smell like, if only because there were scents here that he couldn't identify. And either that was messing with his head or both paths had that same smell.

"We could split up," she suggested mischievously.

"I don't think so," he answered, rolling his eyes and shaking his head.

"Alright, then you pick which way we should go."

Uo hesitated, looking back and forth between the paths. There was no clear reason to pick one over the other, so he decided to trust his instinct that they were the same and he took a step forward-- and then he paused when he heard Buyu make a noise.

"Really? That one?" she asked, "Not the one I would have picked."

"Yes, this one," he said, circling back around so he was behind her and headbutting her towards the path he had selected, "Get a move on, Bu. We're wasting time!"

He chuckled, and she went ahead.

It was dark, though he could see. It was warm too, far warmer than any ordinary mountain would be inside. Of course, if this was an ordinary mountain, the white form would not be here.

Lengidökk had only recently heard about this place, this dormant volcano. With the disbanding of the pride that had lived and worshipped here, he'd seen this as the perfect opportunity to go and see the place in person. There were those who might be surprised that he would so easily leave the snow of the Haven, but any who knew Lengi and knew how seriously he took his domain would only nod and smile.

Out of life comes death. Out of death comes life. This was the cycle that the Winter Solstice represented and reminded the people of. Which made it fitting that the god of said solstice should sit here in the darkly glowing cave, contemplating the molten rock far, far below.

He sat still enough that he could almost be mistaken for a painted statue. But never a mortal. The wings folded against his back made sure of that.

With no more discussions, Buyu and Uokotaji alternated picking the path- which got harder as the cave got darker and darker.. but almost all at once it seemed like it was getting lighter. She had no idea if that meant they were headed back out of the mountain, if they were headed for a window, or if they really were nearing what she imagined to be a fiery centre to this so-far-very-boring chunk of rock.

In the dark, Uo stuck close to his mate and tried to focus on the smell they were headed towards. He was starting to think they might not be able to find their way back out when he was distracted by another new smell, a scent from something that was almost certainly alive.

"Buyu," he murmured in a hushed voice, "Do you smell that?"

She nodded, then realized he probably wouldn't see her head move.

"Yes," she replied, "We're almost there."

"Where?" he asked, wrinkling his nose.

"Wherever we're going," she said with a shrug.

"Shh!"

Around another corder, they were finally at the edge of the hollow where the cliff and bridges were found- and where there was another yet unidentified creature lurking. Buyu stopped at his warning and Uokotaji went out ahead of her. In the dull light offered from far below the bridges, he was far more difficult to spot than Buyu-- or the white god sitting unnaturally still not far off where they were.

Puzzled, Uokotaji froze and stared- unsure of what they had found exactly.

Buyu waited while her mate went ahead but when he froze, she slowly sneaked out after him. She didn't notice the god at all until she reached Uo's side and followed his gaze- startled by what she saw.

"Oh!"

Lengi had been contemplating the meaning of the chamber in which he stood and how that related to the world at large and his domain in small when he heard the unexpected noise. The god turned and smiled, blue eyes lighting up as he saw the wild dogs. As a god with a lion's shape, he tended to have less to do with other races, but that didn't mean he wasn't still known to them, or that he wanted nothing to do with them.

"Well hello there," he greeted the pair. Dark and russet, what an interesting mix. It seemed to him that the dark male was trying to protect the russet female, meaning they were likely kin or mates. Well, they could be friends, but this chamber was a bit far to go as friends. Or so it seemed to the god. Sometimes mortals did the most inexplicable things.

"This isn't exactly a tourist site," he observed dryly, still watching them.

Buyu looked rather excited to see a god, though he was much larger than even she had imagined and he hardly looked like he belonged there either. If this was his volcano, that was hardly evident from his appearance or demeanor.

Uokotaji was less enthusiastic, having a less certain concept of gods and focusing much more on the fact that this land was supposedly inhabited by lion demons-- and here was a lion, a big one, with wings. Still, he could practically feel his mate's excitement.

"Hello!" she said brightly, "You're not a demon, are you?"

She didn't really think he was, but it was the best ice breaker she could think of considering the circumstances. She knew enough about gods not to be afraid but they were in what looked very much like it would be a good place for a demon.. in lands once inhabited by demons.

"Quest!" he murmured, stifling the urge to scold her for being so bold-- but even he thought it was a good question to start with.

"I should hope I'm no demon," the god replied with a smile. The two wild dogs were rather charming, and he wasn't going to refuse company in this desolate place. The mountain itself might have trees on the outside, but in here it was all rock and magma. Not the nicest of places at all.

Then he remembered something. The person who'd told him about the volcano had mentioned that the pride which had lived here had been known as "demons". Which the canines undoubtedly knew.

"Oh, you mean, do I live here? Not at all. I simply came for the view. What of the two of you?" Lengi asked, turning the conversation back to his guests.

Despite his mild scolding of Buyu, Uokotaji looked on with as much curiosity- though his was truthfully much different. He was reassured by the god's assurance that he was not a demon and so let himself stare, taking in this strange sight.

Buyu smiled in return, but then tilted her head curiously when he said he didn't live here. It wasn't surprising, exactly, considering he hardly looked like a volcano dwelling god.. but he was still a god in a very unusual place.

"We heard there were demons here once," she answered, righting her head and answering honestly, "But they've all gone away, so it was safe to come see.. if we could figure out if it was really true!"

Uo nodded along with Buyu's explanation, and when she finished he was the first to realize they had skipped right over introducing themselves-- and, slightly intimidated by the god, he didn't think it would be best to skip over that.

"My name is Thornroot," he said, using his wolf name to avoid starting the same old argument with Buyu in front of a stranger, "And she's Questseeker."

"I am Lengidökk," the god replied politely, inclining his head towards the pair. They seemed to be communicating without words in some ways, a language of movements and gestures that only two had spent a great deal of time together could interpret flawlessly. That was good, good for the two of them and boded well for their future together, if they chose to remain together. He still wasn't certain what that relationship was, but he did wish them well in whatever it was.

Which reminded him...

"If what was really true?" Lengi asked with mild curiosity. "I can understand why you wouldn't wish to come here when it was a pride's sacred place, but what brings you here now?"

He had to wonder if this might be the first of a trend, if mortals would come on pilgrimage to visit this site. Were the three of them the first of hoards? Or...or...well, he might as well wait to see what the two said first.

Uo was pleased with himself for remember to introduce them, but it ultimately didn't seem that important. And learning the god's name didn't help much in determining his identity. His name wasn't in any language that the wild dog was familiar with- or maybe it just wasn't any words he was familiar with.

Oh well.

"The demons!" Buyu exclaimed brightly, "If they were really here, then there must still be evidence. And where better to look than this mountain? It was supposed to be their lair, wasn't it?"

She wasn't entirely clear on the finer details of the pride that once lived here, but she was certainly eager to find out if it was true.

Uo nodded, and glanced around them curiously.

"It's been mostly just dark until here, though."

The striped god smiled and kept his chuckles to himself. Mortals didn't like to be viewed as amusing children, no matter how young they were or how old the god in question was. Still, he didn't want to interrupt their play too much.

"I see," Lengidökk answered, getting to his feet. "This chamber is a wonder in truth, where molton rock burns the heart of the mountain. Do be careful."

He padded towards them - not really going up to them, but the exit was behind the pair. He wasn't going to get much thinking done if they were here and, truthfully, he'd seen what he needed to.

He might not return to the Haven just yet, but he'd leave the wild dogs to their fun.

Both wild dogs nodded, and Buyu stepped aside when the god stepped towards them and it became apparent he intended to go by-- she bumped into Uo, who stumbled over to the side, too. They watched him go, silent.. and sure, despite his assurance that he was not a demon himself, that this would count as evidence of it this being a truly haunted place.

If demons counted for haunting.

They exchanged a look and headed off deeper into the cavern.
