After returning to HQ, Dan decided he needed a test, a challenge to determine how strong he'd gotten since away from Snagem. Of course, that meant leaving Snagem again but screw it! He decided to test his might by battling the pokemon champion with the dragon. Of course, he'd have to challenge the region's E4 and before that, defeat all of the gyms.
And so, that is what has brought Dan to Oreburgh City. The trainer stood before the entrance to the gym with full confidence that this would be an easy victory.
"I mean, it's the first gym. Can't be that hard, right?"
Then again, he'd never battled a gym leader before so who was to say. With a shrug, he entered the gym with little to no knowledge about this gym.

Entering into the Gym, Dan would be greeted by a strangely enthusiastic man that appeared to be a greeter of sorts. "Welcome to the Oreburgh Gym, young challenger! You have taken your first step into the Sinnoh league, and I hope this intro does not disappoint. Your Gym Leader for this gym is Roark, a local miner and avid fossil finder. But to fight him, you have to find him." The greeter had bee blocking the view into deeper within the Gym initially, but moved as he mentioned finding to reveal they were sitting within a rock cavern with three distinct spots to dig through on the back wall. Presenting a tool to the trainer, the greeter man continued with his introduction. "Here you are, your very own Pickax, returnable when you either lose or win in this Gym. Now then, lets see how you do."

The first thing Dan didn't expect was some guy to be in his face with his enthusiasm at 11. It was great that he happy go luck guy and all but...
"Wait, what? I have to find the gym leader?"
He took the pickaxe and at the rock wall ahead, feeling his eyes roll to the back of his head. Just how long was this going to take? And why was he being forced to do the gym leader's job all of a sudden? With a groan, Dan placed the tool over his shoulder and picked a spot on the wall. If this was the way it had to be... He swung the pick into the center and began chipping away at the rock.

Watching as Dan began to dig through the wall, the greeter began tapping his chin in thought. "Did I forget something? Nah, couldn't have. He'll be fine." The man reassured himself, as Dan punched through the thin wall. On the other side, he would find himself with a large empty room that appeared to be an arena. What possibilities could this bring about?

As the wall crumbled, Dan stepped through and entered a empty room. There was something about this room that looked familiar. And then he recognized the ground looked like one of those battle fields he saw on TV. It's been a while since he'd watched TV now that he thought about it. In any case, there was nothing else in this room but there was more walls for him to knock down. Since they were so brittle, he figured it wouldn't take long. Dan made his way across the field to bust out the wall across from him.

The greeter would finally dawn to a realization as Dan reached the middle of the room, smacking his fist down on his other hand. "Right! The rooms are booby-trapped if there is no fight or Roark in them! Oh well, he'll figure it out."
Within the room, the battlefield would begin to shift beneath Dan's feet, likely sending him heaving around as the very ground appeared to lift and lower at random. Occasionally, one might spy a path through to the only wall you could dig through but it might take some observation for that to occur. And the heaves seemed to only get bigger as time kept on moving.

The sudden jerking of the floor beneath his feet caused him to quickly lose balance and take a seat on the floor. What was happening was very unclear to him but he wished for it to stop. Dan looked around, trying to get his bearing but the moving was making it hard to concentrate. Soon, he found the soft spot that would lead to his escape, the trainer tossing the axe hard at the wall.

A small knock from the other side of the wall would open the way for Dan to continue his charge through the wall, a shorter man standing on the other side of the wall. "Hi, I'm the miner here who you get to fight. Eh, beat me, you get to a hint as to which wall to dig through. Don't beat me, answer is obvious. Ready to go then?" Finishing his small introduction, the Trainer released a small Sheildon to stare down the trainer. Cutely at that.

Leaping head first through the gaping hole he made, he ended up in a crouched position. Dan let out a sigh of relief, only to be face to face with a trainer. What exactly was going on here? He only came to fight the gym leader, not other trainers or deal with bizarre rooms. The little Shieldon looked like it was ready for a Pokemon Contest but he digressed.
"If I must..." he grumbled.
Dan tossed out Nova, his Pignite who was less than enthralled about battling. How could he fight something so cute looking? His first command was Fire Pledge, a pillar of fire rising from beneath the fossil pokemon as the boar punched the ground.

The Sheildon would find itself projected into the air on the pillar of fire, flipping as the attack ceased. "Earth Power! Make it count!" The Miner cheered, watching the small yellow Pokemon manage to flip so it could crash into the ground. Which it obviously did, triggering jagged pieces of rock to shoot up from the ground and cause fissures as the attack aimed to smash into the Pignite.

Nova covered his arms in front of him as his trainer instructed, braving the hit as best he could. They would do well to avoid anymore hits like those if they wished to win this battle. Dan knew he might encounter ground type moves but wanted to conserve Rain for the gym leader.
"Alright then, let's finish that thing off quickly then. Arm Thrust, Nova!"
The boar nodded and ran at the fossil with hooves raised. He'd begin "punching" multiple times with a "Nite!" at the end of each strike.

The little Sheildon would cower close to the ground, the first strikes going flying over his significantly smaller form before the rest came raining down on his cowering form. "C'mon buddy! Endure it! And then the Take Down!" The Miner crowed, staring down his fossil Pokemon as it began to stumble through the blows and go for a sucker punch of a Take Down, aiming straight for the Pignite's exposed and unprotected gut.

It took a few misses before landing the rest on the little pokemon. Three out of five wasn't bad; however, the following counterattack caught the Pignite off guard. He went sliding back a bit before hearing Dan tell him to grab the dino by the face.
"Now blast it with Flamethrower" he instructed.
Nova did as he was told, snorting the flames out of his snout at his target. Dan hoped any other trainer battles wouldn't exhaust his pokemon like this. His boar was going to need a long rest after this one.

The Sheildon knew it wasn't gonna be surviving this blast of fire and it simply faced it with dignity. Nodding his head before returning the Pokemon to its home, the Miner sat down on the ground. "Well, you win. Guess you get to figure out which way to go. Left route, you are gonna find a gem. Middle path, you end up down the more treacherous tunnel. And the right path, that is our sealed off section. Take your pick, mister." Finished the confusing riddle, the miner laid across the ground to wait for Dan's response.

As the battle concluded, Dan swiftly returned his Pignite. Since this was a rock gym, obviously, there was bound to be a lot of ground attacks which would make Nova a bad match for the gym leader. He began thinking of what pokemon to conserve for the real battle ahead when the miner began spouting out riddles. And when he was done, he laid sprawled out on the ground, making Dan raise an eyebrow at the man.
"Riiiiight. So. Gem, danger or sealed. Well, I didn't come here for gems and I'd rather not go down dangerous path. So sealed section, your wall is coming down!"
Picking up the axe he threw earlier, he approached the wall and struck it as hard as he could. It wasn't really necessary but he felt like making a spectacle of it.
