From birth until their dying breath, a lion could go their entire life without having seen the horrors two cubs and their guardian Goddess did now. Imhotep had felt something bad before they'd made it over the hill. Somethin' just didn't smell right. But he didn't — he couldn't have imagined this: bodies everywhere, young and old, torn open at the gut or the throat; branches and rocks scattered everywhere; soil and grass and plants disturbed, trampled, uprooted.

Through the eyes of the young, high on a hill, it seemed the destruction touched to the end of the earth. A learned gaze would recognize how small an area it actually was. Whoever attacked them had probably done so fast, with no intent to do anything but pilfer and slaughter from the start.

"Uuni?" Imhotep asked, and for once he sounded as small as he was.
