Science fiction? Creepy? Horror? History? Children's books?

What are your favorite reads?

Do you still read books or use a Kindle (or an e-reader)?

Manga? Hentai? Yaoi? Yuri?

Ah, don't you just love Japan for giving us tentacle porn?

DC Universe? Marvel Comics? Vertigo? Image?

Are you a fan of the New 52?

Fan of Marvel NOW?

Talk about series!
List books you love...or hate!
This would be the place to recommend all the reading love. heart

First thing I'm going to list is for nostalgic childhood reasons:

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. (1981)

More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. (1984)

And Scary Stories 3: More Tales To Chill Your Bones. (1991)

Now, if you have heard of these, just seeing the name of the books should have made you re-live those horrifying pictures by Stephen Gammell.

I have posted a few of the stories on my tumblr:

The Walk.

The Thing.

Cold As Clay.

The Big Toe.

What Do You Come For?

Me Tie Dough-Ty Walker.

The Girl Who Stood on a Grave.

And the one all readers remember The Haunt from The Haunted House.

Audio of the story Harold.

Audio of the story Room for One More.

Anybody enjoyed these as much as I did? twisted

Also add that I do use a Kindle. His name is Sir Roland: Egads Ye Hobags!
I have my own library, tho. I just love the smell of books.

I find that collecting physical copies of comics is pressing my limited space, so I mostly use digital now.

While we're on the subject of creepy books, I just so happen to have written one: ALiCE.

To quote the back cover...

Quote:
Christopher Robinson was a typical young man working as an orderly at a children’s asylum, completely unaware that a car accident would change his fate. Now trapped on a strange island inhabited by even stranger people, Christopher must find a way to rescue the child that appeared with him and return to the asylum. Faced with the island’s mysterious, bloody history and his own descent into insanity, Christopher must either save the child (and himself), or spend the rest of his life as a lunatic in a hellish Wonderland.

ALiCE has just the right balance of horror, camp, and reference hunting that makes it an enjoyable read, especially around this time of the year! However, it DOES cover major phobias and issues like sexual assault and child abuse, so while it is oftentimes camped up, it is not for the faint of heart.

The Mad Tea Party Edition is the (very) special edition of ALiCE, and contains the story plus fun bonus features like character interviews and biographies (complete with new art by my illustrator), commentary from the illustrator and I, a new short story written by our other team member, and more! But be warned—the commentary DOES spoil the ending a few times.

We are pulling ALiCE out of distribution on November 1st, but The Mad Tea Party Edition will still be available past that date. For now, both it and the original ALiCE paperbacks are on sale for 20% off on Lulu.com.

You can buy ALiCE in paperback on Lulu.com (20% off), Amazon, and BarnesandNoble.com, and in ebook on Lulu.com, Amazon Kindle, iBooks, Nook, and Kobo.

The Mad Tea Party Edition is available in paperback from Lulu.com (20% off)and in ebook from Lulu.com and Amazon Kindle.

That is most impressive.

Is it quite the pain to self publish? Do you have to pour a lot of money in to it?

The service that I used, Lulu.com, is free and painless. However, it doesn't get you a lot of notice, unless you're willing to shell out a few hundred for marketing. Another self-publishing service, Ingram, costs a little bit of money but puts you in a better position with book stores since they are a wholesale publisher.

Currently my production team and I are in the process of cleaning up the books again as a final edit in the hopes of finding a third party publisher, which is why ALiCE is going to be taken down after this month. We hope that a third party can give us the exposure and marketing that self publishing cannot, and thus make our books more successful than they have been. ALiCE has been available for about two years now, and I had another book up last summer, and to date we've sold just over 100 copies total.

You can make it work, but as we are busy with college/work/life in general we don't have the kind of time to devote to marketing that would make self publishing a truly successful venture. So our fingers are crossed!

And this also means that if we DO become successful and famous, these earlier editions will be extremely rare, and possibly VERY valuable...~

How much of a percentage does LuLu take off your sales?

The description does interest me. I'm planning on moving so it will be the Kindle version for me. smile

Not a lot, actually. You are able to set your own price. The biggest expense is the printing cost; Lulu.com only takes a very small percent for its own profit, and it's directly proportionate to how much revenue you give yourself. It was always low. I think I make $3 on Lulu.com sales and they get something like 30 cents, for a $10 book. Other distributors like Amazon and Barnes and Noble take much bigger chunks out of your profit, usually $1.50-$2. But they also give you more exposure through which you make more sales so it evens out.

We would very much appreciate it if you would buy it! Supporting independent publishing is always good because it means no executive meddling or focus groups getting in the way of the story.
