This area of the Great Hall has been reserved for people to rest their feet or to sit if they choose not to dance. It is in close proximity to the refreshment area, and people can bring refreshments over if they so choose.

Wendy and Vander had both met in the common room but neither were particularly close in proximity on their quiet walk to where the Yule Ball was held. Merely a nod and the necessary customary greetings-they sounded oh so nice-said so much but said nothing at all. It was merely a habit almost as natural as breathing. Or it was for those of older pureblood families who cared about keeping that air of superiority. Both had families of that sort and aliances of that sort. No, the Lillantine family and the Chaisty family-even the Avery family never aligned but the options of alliances were dwindling. Besides, Wendy found Vander amusing. His little puffed up ego, his arrogance, his insistence on appearing to disagree with her even if she said what he'd agree with-but if she said it first... it was amusing at least. Not that she bothered to admit it much. And she'd rather stick with the story of having no opinion or feelings on any matter. She was a puppet and it was easier to appear as such. Too bad some idiots in the family tree didn't realize that. It wasn't like the family would stick someone in some horrific fate-the Avery head was practical but not evil or sadistic.

She passed by all the couples who were busy looking all cute and awkward and sat down in a seat-assuming Vander had kept up more or less. She sat, back perfectly straight, leg's crossed, hands folded in her lap, perfectly practiced, and perfectly natural-as a slump would be for many 12 year olds. She glanced at Vander and said, "I assume there will be some time before anything half of interest happens. And I see no reason to dance on a mostly empty dance floor-but you are in charge, of course?"

She nodded her head politely and her blue eyes went back to scanning the growing crowd completely impartial to it all.

Dateless...that was what he subjected to...the very thing a few years ago he never would figure would happen to him personally. But, he was dateless...to a dance of this sort...for the first time in his life. Well, this is the second time he's ever been to a dance like this, but he had a date the first time, but he didn't know of a person that he wanted to go with. At first, he wanted to ask Alexandria, one, because that was the only person that he could ask, but then again, he went back on it...not knowing why, but he knew it probably had something to do with blocking his feelings for her...or at least...attempting to do so.

He sat there for a few moments, downing liquid courage from a small flask that he had concealed within his pocket, not really caring what was too happen. So what if he was found? What would happen? It wasn't as if he drank a lot of it and reeked of it...it was just enough to get his thoughts away from the fact that he seriously was there...alone. He had no idea why he even went...but then again, his adopted father had already spent the money to buy him clothes...so might as well work with what he had and maybe find a girl who was as dateless as he was. Sounded like a great time...and serving as a cheers for it, he downed the rest of the liquid in his flask, but it wasn't really enough to get drunk off of...unfortunately.

I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.

Consuming space and time you welcome it.
And drawing side-by-side the lines you see fit...
Truth or consequence; you yield and go-
And take control!
You’re getting big, you’re wanting more...
You’re hiding behind your plastic soul.
Screaming out loud, "Give me it now!"
I don’t have a doubt who’s in control.

You're getting big: Amused | You're wanting more: ... | Hiding behind: Wendy | Your plastic soul: Yule Ball

Vander still wasn't sure that this was a good idea, at all, but it was far too late now and he didn't want to look weak or indecisive. He'd met Wendy in the common room and told her she looked nice, since that was what you were supposed to do with girls. Wendy was strange, though, and it irked him. She didn't look shy or nervous or flustered or anything he'd ever been told girls were supposed to look around boys. But, on the plus side, she wasn't whining or rambling or immediately demanding they they do things. He sat down next to her, back just as straight, though he didn't cross his legs or fold his hands in his lap. She was obviously sorting through the crowd in her head, and he did the same for a moment, knowing he'd grow bored enough soon and they'd have to do something- until he saw something out of the corner of his eye. He could have sworn a nearby older boy was drinking something out of his pocket, and Vander wasn't that stupid to not probably be able to guess what it was. He was amused, to say the least, since he was aware that people either drank in this situation to loosen up or to feel better about themselves and he had a feeling about which one this was. He wasn't sure how to get Wendy's attention to point it out. Usually, when he wanted his siblings to look at something, he just kicked or elbowed them, but he had the sneaking suspicion you weren't supposed to do that to your date. He settled for tapping her on the shoulder as subtly as possible and jerking his sharp chin in the vague direction of probably-has-a-flask-boy. "Either he got stood up or there was no one to stand him up," he muttered, eyes gleaming with a spiteful sort of amusement.

If you follow everyone it’s easier to find-
You have the courage and the heart to lose your mind!
Behind the curtain there’s a certain man you know...
You can’t control.
You need it now, you want it more...
Hiding behind your plastic soul.
You scream out loud, "Give me it now!"
I don’t have doubt who’s in control.

Dylan had made his way to the tables where the dateless students had gathered. There weren't a lot of them, and the only one he recognized was Wendy, and even she had a date. He let out an exasperated sigh and took a seat with the glass of whatever seemed the most appealing that he had gotten earlier at the refreshments stand. He sipped at it lightly, glancing at the two other dateless students. They were both older and he hadn't seen them around the castle as much. His mind then wandered to why he hadn't had a date. There weren't very many people he wanted to go with, although Emily crossed his mind at one point. But he had overheard that she had gone with her friend. He sighed and shrugged his shoulders, sipping at his drink a bit more as he looked down at his attire, a nice suit that seemed like it had gone to waist.

Wendy glanced to Vander as he barely tapped on her shoulder and raised a brow briefly before retruning her expression to its generally neutral state and her gaze followed his slight nod and she leaned over a bit and listened as Vander suggested his thoughts on the matter. "I almost feel sorry for him," Wendy said. "Almost. It isn't like any of us are forced to go to this." She sat back in her chair as before and thought for a moment before she smiled and said, "Unfortunately for him, no matter how weak his mind may be or strong the brew, he'll still have some time of sobriety to worry about." She shrugged and said nothing else on the matter just hands folded in her lap, eyes flicked to the younger Slytherin briefly before scanning the crowd and her eyes paused briefly on one of her fellow second years-the Ravenclaw who was terrified of her and had to have the obnoxious Gryffindor girl stand up for him. Davenport was the girl's name, correct? Pathetic, hiding behind someone else.

"Oh, well, our possibly soon to be intoxicated senior in age isn't the only dateless male here," She nodded to the sighing Dylan Burgamy, "That mouse is dateless too by the looks of it. Maybe a flask would have been less sad. Then again, he hides behind some girl most of the time in classes, so maybe he hadn't the courage to even ask a flask to be his date."

Dylan's eyes switched to Wendy, her not-so quiet words drifting over to him. He frowned, gritting his teeth as he began to sit up and grab his wand, but quickly sitting back down as he noticed what he was doing. He slowly unwrapped his hand around the end of the wand, placing both of his hands into his lap. It was true, he was tired of her attitude towards him, and it seemed to be getting worse, but it was nothing to start a fight over. The fact that the thought of confronting her angrily about it just made him realize that he needed to calm down a bit. Maybe it was the quidditch injury influencing him a bit, he didn't know. He just knew that it was a bad idea, and he would've ruined his calm and collected reputation he thought he had if he did anything brash.

I'm back in Liverpool,
And everything seems the same...
But I worked something out last night,
That changed this little girl's brain!
A small piece of advice,
Sixteen years in the make-
And I will break it to you now,
Please learn from my mistakes.

~ Halfblood Twin ~ Sixth Year Prefect ~ Hufflepuff Seeker ~
{feeling: thrilled} {thinking: ...yeah, I look hot} {with: Dorian} {at: Yule Ball}

Jess would be lying to herself if she wasn't pleased Dorian's reaction. Even if was due to something else entirely, like the sudden horrific realization that he was actually going to have to put up with her for an entire night, any reaction was better than no reaction. She noted his snort at her compliment- he didn't believe her, but he was even more likely to disbelieve her if she pushed the issue. She wasn't necessarily the brightest in school, but Jess had a good grasp of what people were likely to do, in social situations at least. She talked a lot, with a lot of different people. It had paid off, in a way.

"Thanks," she said, and didn't try to hide the pink in her cheeks at the compliment- sixteen and still blushing like a twelve year old when a boy told her she looked good. But that had never really happened when she was twelve, so she figured she was making up for all of it now. She did hope, though, that he wouldn't be too shy the entire night. It was probably selfish of her, but she did want to have a good time, after all. "Let's go, then, before we have a crowd to fight through."

Upon entering the Great Hall, Jess tilted her head back to gape at the snowflakes gently spiraling down from the ceiling, and the giant icicles lining the walls. There was an unearthly blue light to the whole place, as if they were in another world. She was pleased to see that there was one, room to dance, two, places to sit, and three, food to eat. All were equally important, after all. "It's so pretty," she murmured under her breath, before glancing at him with a small grin. "What'd you wanna do first? We can just sit for a bit first, if you want- my twin's over there with his girlfriend, anyways, and well, you know siblings. Sometimes it's better to pretend you don't know them," she said dryly, smoothing her skirt as she sat.

I swear I'll find the cure for a broken heart.

Cara MiaKitty

Let's dance to joy division,
And raise our glass to the ceiling!
'Cause this could all go so wrong,
But we're so happy!
So if you're ever feeling down,
Grab your purse and take a taxi-
To the darker side of town...
That's where we'll be.

spaceDorian had followed Jess to the Great Hall, mentally berating himself for not trying to hold her hand or something. He was her date, he was supposed to escort her or something, wasn't he? Still, he kept tripping over the fact that he was her date (though, there had been no literal tripping as of yet, thank God). Her comment about how pretty everything was was almost completely missed, he was so wrapped up in his own thoughts. When it finally registered, he nodded in agreement. "Yeah it's..." He struggled to find a word. He didn't want to just repeat what she'd said, he'd sound like a bloody parrot or something. The word 'cool' came to mind, but he stopped himself before it slipped out. Now was not the time for awful jokes, he thought, and anyway, he wasn't nearly as funny as Miles was, no way he could pull that pun off. "It's really nice," he finally said, wanting to scowl at how lame it'd sounded.

spaceHe was taken aback when she asked what he wanted to do first. "Uh, it's really up to you. I, um. I wanna do whatever you wanna do," he told her, turning pink again. Dammit, just when his complexion had returned to normal, too, he thought. He was sort of grateful she didn't seem to keen on the idea of dancing, at least right now, though he knew that eventually she'd probably want to. That was going to be fun, he thought sarcastically. But, her comment about her brother snapped him at least somewhat out of his nervous state, and he scowled. "There are plenty of times I want to pretend I don't know my brothers," he said, nodding in agreement. "Almost as many are there are times that I wish they'd do the same with me." Like when Julius had poked his nose into Dori's life and asked Jess to go to the dance with him, he thought with some aggravation. Not that it hadn't worked, obviously, but still. Dori was pretty sure the night was going to be awful, and she was going to have an awful time, and then they wouldn't even be friends anymore because it'd be too awkward. He did sort of wonder, though, why she didn't want to be near her brother. He knew why he was avoiding Julius, of course, and honestly he had no idea if Tyson had even come to the dance at all. Honestly, the whole thing had just been an excuse to stay at school for the holiday instead of going home and being on house arrest. That didn't mean they'd been obligated to attend. Ty might be sitting in his dorm reading for all Dori knew... actually, that was probably exactly what he was doing. But, that didn't explain why Jess didn't want to be near her brother and his girlfriend. He hoped that it didn't have anything to do with him. It wasn't like she would be embarrassed to be there with him, right? She wouldn't have said yes if that were the case, he reasoned, though there was still a small part of him that remained unconvinced. Still, at least it meant he wouldn't have to embarrass himself trying to dance with her yet.

Rosabella felt a mixture of emotions: mad, lonely, homesick. You name it as long as it wasn’t happy. She wanted nothing more than to be home for Christmas, to have woken up today to find an array of gifts under the family tree and open them with her family just like she had done during previous years. The brunette let out an exasperated sigh as she slumped into a chair. The only reason she was stuck at school was because of this stupid Yule Ball. Because Alex and Dalton wanted to go, their parents decided to bring them home for the remaining week of the holidays after the dance. As much as the fourteen year old loved to dance, the only way she would have had fun tonight was if she had a date (just like anybody else who was going to have fun tonight). In fact, she wouldn’t have even come if her parents hadn’t sent her a new dress and basically guilt tripped her into going. Oh, how stupid life was sometimes. Why go home and see her muggle friends when she couldn’t be stuck at school, surrounded by hundreds of students who didn’t give a damn about her?

Well, actually, maybe it was to thumb his nose at his da a bit. Considering the things that he had been explicitly told he had to do by his adopted father, he was sure that staying at the school instead of coming home was one of those things he would get into trouble with. Oh well, it wasn't like Ciaran would be able to stop him. He gazed around the hall quietly before settling down in a seat next to a girl, looking for Jer. Of course his brother wasn't here, he probably was off snogging Gypsy at this moment. Sighing, Kenny crossed his arms and looked over to the girl, and then blinked. The girl seemed to be depressed, and Kenny bit his lip before deciding to say something. "Ball's not really what you wanted to do?" He knew he had seen her around before, but he couldn't place her, other than the fact that she was in his year and a Gryffindor. He didn't care about that, really. Heck, he was practically invisible in the school considering he never really spoke much.

Vander wondered just how long Wendy had been perfecting that look of neutrality. He'd never met anyone his age capable of molding their face into such a blank look like that for the majority of the time. While he probably wouldn't have felt sorry for the older boy, even if attendance of the ball had been mandatory, she did have a point. There were plenty of places to get drunk in peace and quiet. Vander had to assume that the older Slytherins made good use of the labyrinth of dungeons in that regard. He waited almost eagerly while she scanned the crowd, knowing she was about to pick someone out. She settled on an indeed mousy looking, in his opinion, brown haired boy. He snorted at her description of the boy, even if he was in the year above. Vander had never hid behind anyone in his life, and felt that hiding behind a girl was even worse. It was like something Cyrus would do, though it could be argued that he saw his younger brother in anyone and everyone, simply because of how much he hated the younger boy. The Ravenclaw must have heard them, though, and Vander watched with great interest as he seemed to start to get up and grab his wand. Vander didn't stiffen or reach for his own wand, in fact, he almost relaxed and let his hands curl loosely into fists, the beginnings of a smirk on his face. He knew he had a habit for picking fights, and he'd never fought a fair one in his life, but it wasn't a requirement that the other person be unable to hit back. He just liked fighting. But the other boy apparently snapped himself out of whatever anger had momentarily taken control of him, and sat back down. Vander felt a flood of disappointment about the whole thing, but then again, he felt like getting a letter sent home about his behavior would just spell bad things for when he actually went home come summer. His pale eyes widened in faint surprise as a redheaded older girl, who seemed tipsy already, approached the Gryffindor boy trying to flee from sobriety himself. "Speaking of flasks for dates," he muttered, "What do you make of that?" He was entirely unused to asking anyone's opinion on anything, but who else was he going to speak with?

If you follow everyone it’s easier to find-
You have the courage and the heart to lose your mind!
Behind the curtain there’s a certain man you know...
You can’t control.
You need it now, you want it more...
Hiding behind your plastic soul.
You scream out loud, "Give me it now!"
I don’t have doubt who’s in control.

Valentina said as she was taking a sit and taking off her shoes. "Man that's allot better" She told herself. "The jumping to the Black Lake still sounds good. " As she giggled to herself. "Still haven't seen Jasper or Alice. Or anyone that is evening interesting a slight bit" Valentina told herself. "Yet I could of been doing something that wasn't wasting my time." She told herself as she took a sip from her flask. "Dateless, That's me, Dateless Valentina that can't even get a date for a school ball." She said as she was drinking from her hip flask. "Maybe I should get drunk here. Sounds good to me." Valentina giggled to her plan
