The King bustled around the kitchen, putting the last remaining items in the hamper he'd purchased just for this occasion.

The title had been...unexpected. He'd entered the competition mostly to get his hands on some high quality apples, and had wound up winning the entire thing. Sure, it made sense. He was an elder horseman, he was accustomed to working with Fear and harvesting it. He had had centuries to figure out what his palette liked. But that didn't necessarily translate to what some simple Halloween citizens might think.

With such a title under his belt it was only natural that he should cook for his priestess. Oh he had made food before, but not going all out. Now his basket strained with ciders, tarts, cakes, and all sorts of dishes. He'd even chosen the spot carefully, a sunny field to visit in the human world, in a place that was warm despite the chill of the 12th month of Halloween.

Closing the hamper he lifted it, using both hands to keep it steady before heading to the living room to find his priestess. "Neru." Her name was all he said, but his fine could speak volumes enough.

Nergui of course had always considered her stallion a King, but she had been overjoyed to find he'd taken home the crown. A cooking contest, yes, but from what she had heard the competition had been fierce, and the judges hard to please. It was no small feat, and Soren had excelled. She'd rewarded him fro the victory, a few times already, they hadn't yet exhausted the excuse for impromptu rolls in the hay.

When Soren came looking he'd find her perched on edge of the couch in the living room. She had finished dressing, and was now work silver curls into a thick braid over one shoulder. Nimble fingers were tying it off as the mare looked up at him. "My guardian?"

Their suite had been thick with the smell of apples for hours. It was absolutely, mouth wateringly delicious. Some scents she recognized, but the majority, even bled together, were new and enticing. "You've been busy?"

"Mmhmm," he hummed, setting down the hamper and moving closer to her. The stallion was like a moth to the flame as he leaned down, pecking her lips with his own before trying to remind himself he had a mission. But at least it was a fun one. "I hoped you'd join me on a picnic," he admitted, trying to sound nonchalant and like this wasn't one of the sappiest things he had done to date. But he was proud of what he had created for her, and he would be proud to go anywhere with her at his side.

"There's no rush, so if there's anything you need to do this can wait. And I've arranged for a portal when you're ready."

When she was ready he would take up the basket and escort her out, but until then he would happily watch her. He had not yet memorized all of her movements or quirks, the little habits that would stick in his mind no matter how long they may have to part for something came up like a long mission.

Nergui tipped her head back as Soren leaned in to lay a soft peck of a kiss against her lips, and she'd a second before he was able to straighten. "You know, that sounds lovely." An afternoon with just the two of them, away from all responsibilities and distractions/. It sounded like a wonderful idea.

There was nothing currently occupying her focus. True, there was an old book resting on the couch beside her hip, but she'd set it down nearly ten minutes ago. So, smiling, she rose to her feet, collecting the book, and reached up to stroke gentle fingers along the scared side of his face as she passed him on her way to the meditation room. When it had been returned to its proper place she headed towards their bedroom, though paused in the doorway. "Are we heading somewhere warm?"

"Yes," was the simple reply, and it gave away none of the detail that had gone into the decision. The times that he had snatched a few minutes here and there to visit different places without her knowing, trying to keep it a surprise. The fact that he had three possible locations, ranked, and depending solely on the weather (which he had even paid a soldier to check just a couple of hours ago) was something he didn't actually want her to know.

He was tempted to follow her into the bedroom, but knew that if he did he probably wouldn't want to leave. And while a picnic in bed had a certain nice ring to it, he still wanted to make some memories outside of their quarters. Then he realized he'd forgotten to get a blanket, and went to pick out a quilt that they wouldn't be too upset about if it had too many grass stains. That was folded and set on top of the hamper and then he simply waited for her, not wanting to rush her. Today was all for her. Just like every day should be.

Certainly they'd have gotten distracted, so it was better the stallion hadn't followed. Yes was all the answer he was willing to give her, so Nergui was wearing a soft, pleased little smile as she headed for the wardrobe. Warm; it meant light fabrics and light colors. A white dress with delicate little designs that hit her at mid thigh. A lacy shawl was draped over her shoulders, and she took a moment to check hair and jewelry before heading back out to meet him in the other room.

He was laying a folded blanket on the hamper she knew held everything he intended to bring with him, and she came to stand at his side with a light hum. Ethereal in appearance normally, it was helped along by the deliberate absence of shoes. As if she were some creature carved of light and darkness.

"Ready my love?" Her fingertips trailed up the strong line of his back.

The reappearance of his priestess breathtaking, and until she spoke he merely drank her in with his eyes. Her words did reach him, but he still took a while to rake his gaze up to her eyes. He merely hummed his assent, grabbing the basket by the handles and offering his free one to her. In some ways he was glad they were merely going for a picnic, he wasn't sure he could bear all the looks she would doubtlessly get for hours on end.

He was already making plans to thank her for dressing up for their day out.

When she was ready he would lead here out of their quarters and down from the Death floor, making their way to the portals. The portal was already waiting for them, manned by an ashen soldier that he nodded to. He had chosen one that two could go through side by side, and it would open up to a meadow with a small hill, a tree crowning the top, leaves rustling lightly in the wind.

The look in his eyes could have made a younger mare blush. As it was, Nergui met that heated gave with one in return, full lips ticked up in one corner as her chin rose, almost a challenge, but she'd take his arm as it was offered. Demure and lady like. A hand at his elbow, and one on his wrist.

In truth Soren might not have had as much to worry over as he'd assumed. While lovely, Nergui's skin tone marked her as other. She and her cousin were both seen as bad omens. It had meant a lonely childhood, and even now she still received the occasional odd glance, though certainly not half so much. It seemed to the priestess that many of those that had stuck to the old beliefs were now gone, or conformed. For the Insanity tainted mare, this came as a relief.

She walked at Soren's side, a picture of elegant grace, and delicate features belayed a humble pride. Pleased to be on the arm of her guardian. Pleased their life had gone from sorrow and suffering to the bliss they were now living.

As they walked through the portal the mare gave a soft little gasp as she took in the scene around her. Wild flowers and flowing grass, a rolling hill, and there, at the top, a lone tree. It was breathtaking, and Nergui gave Soren's arm a squeeze. "This is beautiful."

Soren smiled, and it took a moment to realize that his face was slightly too warm. Startled he realized that he was actually blushing like a live-sick colt, and not at all like the mature stallion that he actually was. The realization only increased the flush darkening his cheeks. He cleared his throat and had to look away, focusing on the tree which was where he had thought they might like to spread out.

"I hoped you would like it," he said softly. "The hill has a good vantage point." Whether he was referring to the scenery or as a tactical advantage was somewhat up in the air, but it would at least explain where he was headed to as he kept walking.

The hill wasn't too steep, nor did it rise that high above the rest of the meadow. At the top the stallion set down the basket and once the priestess let go of his arm moved to spread out the blanket, not wanting to risk grass stains on the dress his lady was wearing. "I hope this is fine," he said a bit gruffly, trying and probably failing to pretend like he totally had this all under control and he wasn't battling his nerves that practically screamed at him to make sure everything was perfect. If he was going to do this, he wanted to do it right.

It took a moment longer for Nergui to become aware of the darkening of his cheeks. She was captivated by the scenery, it was beautiful after all, and she didn't glance up again at him until the deep rumble of his voice. When she did see, it brought a thoughtful tilt of the head from the mare, and she stroked a hand along his arm, smiling adoringly up at him. "It's absolutely gorgeous, my guardian. Prettier than the gardens of Conquest." And that was saying something.

She released his arm as they reached the top of the hill, standing patiently as he lay the blanket out, then lowering down to sit with legs folded to one side. The picture of elegance and grace. "This is perfect." The weather, the location, the picnic, but most of all, Soren's presence. They could have been doing anything, anywhere, and she would have been content, but this was enough to make her heart swell.

It was a little odd seeing him like this--nervous, almost shy. It had a soft, amused little smiie resting on full lips as she smoothed the layers of her skirt along her thighs and folded her hands on her lap. Waiting patiently for him to join her.

He couldn't help but want to preen, and as he finally knelt down and started to unpack the basket there might have been a few subtle flexes of muscle.

The basket contained food. Food, food, and more food. He had packed it as if it were a puzzle, and first came the delicate goblets accompanied with a couple of different bottles. One of a nicely aged red wine, the other an apple cider (to no ones surprise). Then came the food. First the entire meal he had made for the finals of the Hell's Kitchen competition, then even more apple-based items. A walnut and apple salad. An apple tart. Stuffed, baked whole apples. Chicken and apple sausages.

Several more dishes were revealed and finally out came the plates, serving utensils, and utensils for their own use. It was a rather impressive spread if he did say so himself, and it was clear why he had spent the entire morning in the kitchen (and part of the night before). Finally he settled back, curious to see what she would want to sample first and also to see her reaction. "Bon appetit."

Brows arched as Soren began unloading the basket. Dish after dish after dish. More food then she ever would have guessed might possibly fit in there. It was an impressive bit of packing, to be sure, and as the last of the delicious smelling items was removed she gave a very low whistle as slightly widened eyes rolled up to meet his. "Have I told you lately how wonderful you are?" The mare rolled onto her knees, rising up so she could cup his cheeks in her palms and claim his lips in a kiss.

He had been busy. It was quite impressive, but more than that, it was incredibly thoughtful. He'd done all this for he. Not just the beautiful location, not just a day to themselves, but a plethora of handmade goodies they could share. goodies he'd spent hours upon hours making.

When she drew back she was smiling at him, and a tilt of her head let their brows meet. "This is amazing." I love you so much.

The thought passed between them.

Soren let the kiss linger as long as she would allow it, leaning forward slightly when she started to pull away only to let it end with a touch of reluctance. What he had done was no more than what she deserved. A simple offering for her to enjoy, and so long as she even remotely liked it he was satisfied. He liked this, liked showing her how he felt in different ways, whether it involved slaughtering at her side or offering her a tasty morsel with his fingers.

"Thank you," he murmured, not caring that no one was around them to hear him if he spoke louder. He preferred to stay quiet, to keep an air of intimacy around them. He worked at pouring her a goblet of a wine he knew she preferred, trying to take on as many tasks as possible so she could just relax. "I love you too."

He didn't say it often, the feeling always present but rarely put into words, shown with actions instead, and he was oblivious that he was answering a thought that had never actually been voiced.

She still had his cheeks cradled between her palms, and she gave him a look as her whisper through his mind went seemingly unnoticed. Lips pursed, the corners tugged up in amusement, she leaned into him again, very nearly crawling right into his lap as she caught his lips in a kiss that made their previous pale in comparison.

It was then, as their mouths were otherwise occupied, that she would try to catch his attention again, in more ways than one. My love. It would have been impossible to speak naturally, and her voice would find him clear as day, like the soft chime of tin bells.

You spoil me, my stallion. Thumbs moved along his cheeks, following the contours of handsome features until her fingers sank into the warm cinnamon mass of soft hair.

He welcomed her in his space, loving when she demanded more from their kiss, letting it deepen rather willingly. Food could always be eaten lazily after other activities, and he could be persuaded easily. With a mere suggestion really.

Her tongue was in his mouth when he heard her speak again, momentarily distracted though and the endearment didn't quite get through to him. No, it wasn't until her other words reached him that he let the kiss falter, mind piecing things together before he refocused, groaning at the sensation of fingers in his hair.

You deserve everything that I can give you. It was strange to put the words into thoughts only, nudging them toward her. He lifted a hand to her back, wanting to keep her close.

Now when did you learn this?
