DEATH BECOMES YOU

gaia_crown [ LOCATION ]

    Aokigahara, Japan

gaia_crown [ SETTING ]

"The forest of Aokigahara is known as a place that draws from both urban legends and lore, as well as modern fact- a place of death and suicide, people go in, intending to end their lives. As a result hunters regularly go in and either pose as civilians and act to curb those who seek death, or they go in and gather remains, returning them to local officials under the guise of a volunteer group. Anything they can do to try and curb the ever growing perpetuation of FEAR the forest generates from it's notoriety. The land is quiet and has few animal inhabitants. Yet the lack of human intrusion in many parts has made it relatively difficult to trek once off of paths- a fact that poses no problem to the veteran horseman. Hunters reside in small units scattered through the forest, using high grade mobile barrier daggers and gear to protect themselves from the occasionally FEAR saturated forest. "

gaia_crown [ MISSION ]

The forest itself is a place that draws in death of humans naturally. The hunters have long fought a losing battle here in attempting to stem the flow of FEAR from these woods yet now is an opportune moment to strike. Humans are awash in hopelessness as their control of their world slips out from under them; the sound of death calls them like a siren's song. The hunters here will come if they see humans on the move, attempting to save them from their own fate. Herd the humans to their demise to draw the hunters from the safety of their hidden little hole of shields, and destroy them.

gaia_crown [ MECHANICS ]

Stage 1: Drawing out the Hunters

Roll 1d20 for encounters - after three humans have been herded to the woods, proceed to Stage 2.

  1. Human Encounter! Coax them gently into the woods and urge them to do commit their final act...
  2. Hunter Encounter! The hunter was scouting the woods and has spotted you. Move onto Stage 2 Immediately!
  3. Human Encounter! Coax them gently into the woods and urge them to do commit their final act...
  4. A gun, empty sits next to single spent bullet. Oddly, there is no body near it.
  5. The sounds of a group of humans in the distance calling for someone. They are trying to save a lost soul and thus, are not prime targets. Best to keep moving.
  6. Human Encounter! Coax them gently into the woods and urge them to do commit their final act...
  7. Signs of Life- tags on the trees show humans that have walked these paths before..yet none are here now. Unfortunate.
  8. Human Encounter! Coax them gently into the woods and urge them to do commit their final act...
  9. Hunter Encounter! The hunter was scouting the woods and has spotted you. Move onto Stage 2 Immediately!
  10. Human Encounter! Coax them gently into the woods and urge them to do commit their final act...
  11. An abandoned car on the side of a small dirt road- It looks to have been there a while, and an empty infant's car seat sits in the back.
  12. Hunter Encounter! The hunter was scouting the woods and has spotted you. Move onto Stage 2 Immediately!
  13. Human Encounter! Coax them gently into the woods and urge them to do commit their final act...
  14. A small bouquet of flowers sits near a oddly shaped stone. There are no words. Only the flowers- white lilies- that perhaps hint to the meaning of this offering.
  15. Human Encounter! Coax them gently into the woods and urge them to do commit their final act...
  16. A man with a gunshot wound lays on his back, expression shocked. He must be freshly dead, as few flies have found his corpse. No gun is nearby yet the wound is distinct in it's human origins.
  17. Hunter Encounter! The hunter was scouting the woods and has spotted you. Move onto Stage 2 Immediately!
  18. Human Encounter! Coax them gently into the woods and urge them to do commit their final act...
  19. A well decayed corpse clatters as your foot collides with bone. There is nothing left to really hint who this might have been- other than a very broken pair of glasses and a small now damaged journal rendered illegible by weather and rot.
  20. Human Encounter! Coax them gently into the woods and urge them to do commit their final act...

Stage 2: Killing the Hunters

Hunters come in sets of three. Their combined HP pool is 120, though every 40 damage you deal means 1 hunter has been killed.

Having spotted you the hunters begin their offensive, and do 3 damage for each turn. After you take out one group... dark you return to exploring to draw out more?

If you feel up to the challenge, return to stage 1 and herd more humans. Repeat as many times as you like. This mission is considered complete after you have eliminated 1 hunter group minimum.

gaia_crown [ BONUS MECHANICS ]

All Elder horsemen may skip to stage two if they so wish after 1 human encounter, their skills allowing them to herd more than 1 human at a time.

Please apply these bonuses based on your clan:

    • Conquest: So long as all 3 are alive, you do +2 damage to each successful hit.
    • Famine: Last Man standing- When the Last hunter remains, dish out +1 damage for each successful hit.
    • War: Fearsome Screech- Letting out a battle cry in the silent forest causes the hunters to be alarmed, stopping them from damaging you every 5 turns.
    • Death: Natural bonus! +1 to damage for each successful hit.

gaia_crown [ REWARDS ]

+1 Additional RP point for completion

Lurks smooshed his face to the big red crystal, touching it with his skeleton-bone fingers, with almost a caress. He didn't like it, per say, but it had its uses. He could be strong together with its help. A task was assigned to him, an honour and a duty to complete.

Which, well.

Neither of those mattered to him much, but the Famine was restless as he waited for his partner.

This was all foreign to Borr, though he was satisfied enough to perform any duty assigned to him. Gathering FEAR wasn't odd, but this was all new to him, the tower and the crystals... it wasn't at all like the old times.

The massive stallion was geared up and ready, fur and leather and buckles making the older man feel much more strapping than he truly was. He'd been assigned a partner but given no name or description.

"Greetings.." Borr was cheery enough, hands wringing and adjusting his own gloves. How long since he'd done true work?

The odd famine horseman caused him a head tilt with how he molested the large red crystal. "I am Borr.." He held out a hand for a shake. "Are we ready?"

Lurks clutched Borr's hand with his own, dwarfed by it and seemingly in awe at the fact.

"You are," he said, ignoring the question, "very very very big." He blinked, luminous orange eyes peering upwards. "Did you know?"

But ready he was. At Borr's guidance, Lurks would follow on light feet, hovering and diving and ducking through scenery as they made their way to Japan.

He'd expected the famine horseman to be odd, most were with their chemically addled minds, but this one was positively bubbly and Borr felt as if he may break the small hand when he shook it. "I'm beginning to realize.." He chuckled playfully.

There wasn't much more talking until they were crunching quietly through the fallen leaves and underbrush of the Japanese forest. He wasn't built for stealth, most death horseman weren't with buckles and jems and muffled cloaks and burnished metal. Leave stealth to the fleet footed conquests or the airborn war clan, the skeletal and light Famine. Death had a specific purpose, a final end point for all who came to them. Death came heavy and pressing, death was about determination and that inevitable end.

As Lurks ducked and dove and tumbled Borr simply strode. It was their mission to drive out the humans, why would he need to hide for that. He breathed the fresh air with a deep breath and exhale that could probably blow Lurks away were he closer.

"They are here.." he rumbled to his companion. As an ashen solider, this was his entire purpose. He may have been out of practice but all it took was jumping back in to stir the old instincts.

The sound of sobbing, metallic rattling, and Borr was drawn. A dark haired girl leaned against a tree, a palm pressed to her eyes and rubbing furiously as she shuddered with sobs. A revolver trembled in her hands, hammer cocked back.

She didn't seem to see the horseman, not yet, not until the massive shape of Borr was crouching in front of her. She blinked through her tears as if he were a spectre. His eyes... were so welcoming..

"Shhh.." His appearance had always been a tool. Large and welcoming, like a father or a grandfather, waiting embracing arms. "This is meant to happen.." He urged, though to her human mind the wordsand language didn't matter. She nodded almost dumbly as he stood and beckoned.

She followed, gun held firmly and surely.

Lurks was coming to decide that he was fond of Death horsemen. Of course, Sindri had always been there to teach him about the great many many mysteries of the universes, and all the odd little rituals that were, somehow, always time consuming and incredibly tedious. It was nice to meet yet another that was good company!

Borr was not stealthy, and as it turned out, Lurks was only stealth when he remembered to try. He alternated between being quiet as a ghost, watching Borr work with big, widened eyes. Full of wondrous awe, Lurks Beneath witnessed the passing of a girl, obediently listening to the Death horseman's final guidance towards her end.

He gleefully cheered and clapped once the deed was done, creeping closer to get just a little bit of a taste-- a bony finger scooped up a bit of brain matter, so that Lurks might get a taste.

Except.

Being loud had its consequences. A flash of gold and white glittered in the distance, and was steadily encroaching.

Borr drew small scimitars as the gold and white was caught in his vision.

"Up ahead.." He nodded to Lurks then nodded to the approaching enemy. Everything kind and soft about the massive stallion seemed to suddenly steel. His twinkling eyes grey stormy, his mouth a hard line, and his massive arms flexed and tensed in anticipation as he flipped his swords lightly in his fingers.

He glanced to his faminine companion and put a finger to his lips, nodding off the path into the tall trunks around them. Even if the hunters were looking, they'd always been rather terrible about predicting horseman movements. Inevitably they could spring a trap, but the hunters made up for it with their abominations of weapons.. and their strength.

Three of them walked into the clearing, one with a rifle and two with swords of various sizes. They were chatting with each other, keeping on alert, before they spied the body of the girl.

'Over here'
'Ah s**t not another one.'
'I told you not to stop and take a piss I bet we coulda stopped her.'
'Its the suicide forest dude, take her home and she'd probably just do it there.'
'Harsh dude.'

Borr motioned with his fingers to Lurks and sprung himself with a heavy crash on the nearest one. The sword in their hands was unwieldy, larger than the hunter themself, but Borr had weight and size on his size.

Their weapons clashed, the hunters crying out in alarm and Borr roaring with a ferocity that was a far cry from his usual personality.

"Hello!" Lurks offered brightly, waving with both hands as the rifle hunter put a bullet through his vacant ribcage. "Hello, I am Lurks!"

He dashed towards them, skipping instead of fighting, probably much to Borr's disappointment.

Beaming up at the giant sword hunter, he laid a hand on the man's arm for a brief moment. "I like hunters, very very much! What is--"

He was interrupted with a sharp shrug and a sword to the arm for his kindly efforts. "Don't ******** touch me," she hissed, disapproving and with hackles raised.
