Houri paced herself through the cliffs, “What an amazing sight.” The lioness couldn’t help appreciating how beautiful the ocean waves were as they crashed against the rocks in the evening light. All of her life she had been training in the darkness how to fight against darker lions and yet had never taken a moment to appreciate the beauty of the nature around her. Finding the ocean finally had forced the lioness to take a step back to appreciate things. Pya as well. She smiled at the thought of her grumpy mate. He was another reason she had been taking time to breathe more than just rushing around.
“Perks of finding a home.” The lioness chuckled lightly to herself as she watched over the ocean.
Eris found herself strolling through her usual haunt in the cliffs. Each evening the lioness preferred to find solitude rather than the company of others. These cliffs were perfect as others would be mostly inside of the pride now if not preparing to go out into the rogue lands. Her pawsteps were gentle and quiet as she skirted around the loose rocks. She was personally not a fighter but still had plenty of grace and balance in her stride. A perfect wife for a Viking. She teased herself quietly before slipping down to the lower rocks.
I would much rather make the ocean my mate. It truly was beautiful to see the striking colors against the waters. Each danced with their own beauty and Eris truly wished she could fly out over them with the birds. If she wasn’t so afraid of being bothered the lioness would be more tempted to go slip into the waters. Maybe a late night swim wouldn’t be such a bad idea. She smiled a rare smile before just shaking her head sadly.
It was easier to appreciate things from afar after all.
Maybe I can convince Pya to take a stroll here with me. Houri flushed at the thought. She was a much better warrior than a romantic. The lioness never understood how her aunt and uncle always seemed so lovey dovey yet could rip a new one into any enemy at the same time. “Maybe I was better on my own.” The lioness wrinkled her nose before sighing softly. For her mate though she would deal. She had already tried leaving him once and had hated herself for it. Guess I’m stuck with him.
Still her paws stopped as she heard a light rustle behind her. Others may have not noticed it, but the lioness remembered all of the nights she had been pounced for letting such noises slip under her notice. Gaze narrowing Houri spun around on her paws to glance about, “Hey!” She braced herself. Even in a pride the lioness could never let her guard down for a moment. Vikings after all could be a rather rough crowd.
Eris had to suppress her growl when she found herself staring back at the golden lioness. Why in the world did others suddenly want to start coming to this area? This was supposed to be her sacred ground! Not that she could truly claim it, but the lioness had been comfortable without others wandering around. Lately though it seemed she couldn’t get a break.
Taking a breath Eris called out softly, “I didn’t mean to startle. I’m just passing through.” The dark lioness nodded her head before taking a few steps to the side. She was no fighter after all and had no such desires to do anything of the sort. That was why she often found it easier to just slip past unnoticed.
Huffing Houri pulled back, “It would help if you didn’t try being like a shadow.” Her gaze was stern as she gazed over the other lioness, “You don’t seem like a fighter at all so why be alone out here?” She shook her head, “Pride or not it’s still dangerous to go out alone.” As much of a feminist and a strong individual as she was the lioness hated seeing weaker females on their own. A bunch of trouble usually brewed from that. Honestly it wouldn’t be the first time that she had jumped in to rescue another.
Look at me playing the mother type. She wrinkled her nose again before shaking her head, “Never mind I have no reason to chastise you. Just go on then.”
Biting back her sharp retort Eris blinked in surprise. First she gets after me and then she lets me be? What a strange lioness! Being a true blood of the pride the lioness had to peer forward to get a better look at the other, “You must be new here.” She found herself commenting softly, “But I’m fine on my own. You don’t need to worry about me.”
The smallest hint of a grin crossed her features, “They tend to find me as a symbol of bad luck so no one wants much to do with me.” Not that she was moping about it nor was she bragging. It was just common that the lioness who had killed her mother in birth and had ‘cursed’ her uncle in battle was avoided. Who wanted such bad luck after all?
“Bad luck?” Houri laughed, “Good thing I don’t believe in that then!” Her gaze glimmered with humor, “Any type of spirit or bad fortune can try to bite me and I’ll just bite it back.” She came from a family of demon hunters after all. There was nothing that the darkness could throw at her to make her back down!
“They’re fools though.” She glanced over the lioness again, “You’re too pretty to be considered bad luck.”
Eris just found herself flushing, “I wish.” She shrugged her shoulders, “I think it’s just bad fortune follows me, but I’m alright with that.” Her pretty though? She never took the time to even think about it. It was much easier just watching the wide world, “I think I’m alright being alone so it’s okay if no one can consider me pretty anyways. Thank you though for the compliment.”
“Yeah I thought that once.” Houri smiled, “But now I have a grump stuck at my side.” The lioness shook her head with a laugh, “Give it some time and maybe someone will fight through that ‘curse’ of yours to see what’s really shining inside.”
Maybe she was just a romantic and a warrior after all, “Either way you can always stick by me if you need. I don’t mind fending off some fools.” She winked playfully, “If you wouldn’t mind actually I’m kinda lost since I’m new to the pride. Care to show me around these cliffs?” That way she could learn a good path and take Pya here one evening. The sunset really was pretty on the waves after all…
Someone who would want to fight against luck for her? She doubted it yet a small smile sneaked across her lips, “I suppose it would be a shame to just leave you here.” Eris nodded quietly, “Come then I can show you a spot where the sun sinks beautifully.”
Stretching she started across the rocks with the golden lioness at her side.
