The giant green male huffed roughly to himself under his breath. He had just had yet another argument with his sister over her choice of suitor. Ok, so the first time he had totally jumped to the wrong conclusion about her and Ragnvard. But this time he had been right! He may fight alongside Ronan and he certainly trusted the other reaver with his life, but that didn't mean he was about to trust the guy with his baby sister!!

Grumbling to himself, tail flicking in agitation, the blue-maned reaver stalked along the path, not really paying attention to where he was going, lost in his own thoughts as he silently ranted in frustration. Ronan was a nice enough male but he was brother to Ragnvard! As if that wasn't enough the guy was also a reaver, like Aksel himself. Why couldn't his sister choose a nice freeborn male, or a priest or someone to settle down with? Reavers were violent and mean tempered and they had far too many opportunities to fling around with strangers while out on Vikings, he didn't want his beloved sister to take up with some male that cared more about his fermented fruit than her own wellbeing!

Sadly Audlin didn't see things the way he did and she was so wild and high spirited he truly despaired for her...

User ImageDrifa poked at the necklace she had made. Her mother made this sort of thing look easy and while Drifa's work did not look bad, it most certainly did not turn out as intended. Instead of a delicate female suited piece she had ended up with what looked more like a warrior's amulet of teeth and bone. She really wished she had her mother's skill to help her bring in a husband because so far, her search had been without fruit. The lioness often wondered if the reason her mother was so good at crafting was because she made some deal with a god to trade her desire to have a mate for the skill and focus of crafting.

Drifa was aware that it was probably a silly thought, but it somehow made more sense than just naturally lacking a desire for a mate. The lioness wanted very much to find a male that would like coming home to her. She was wonderful wife material, and would dote on a husband, especially a warrior. She wasn't picky she'd take a Reaver as quick as a Captain, but she wasn't really into the idea of a Freeborn male or priest. She wanted a strong male, and she was starting to wonder if the gods were laughing at her desires.

Drifa was not paying attention to things around her as she glared at the amulet, and thus got run into by the green male whom was not watching where he was going. She barely kept him from stepping on the amulet with all it's teeth and bone bits that would have hurt his paw. "Ooooof! Watch where you are going... Are you well?" He seemed a bit distracted, worried even, and that bothered her. At least by the look of him, he likely was not hurt from running into Drifa. As big as he was, he probably could have run her over and broken everything in her and still be unscathed.

Cursing sharply under his breath as he quickly sidestepped both the female and whatever it was on the floor next to her, he managed to catch his balance.

"Gods! I didn't see you there." Gathering himself from the unexpected near-accident he frowned down at her, though it was not angry, rather he seemed distracted still. "Well? I am fine..." Clearly puzzled he stared at her, though at least he seemed to be fully aware now rather than lost in whatever thoughts had been consuming him so much that he very nearly flattened her.

Finally he seemed to realise what she meant and he shook his head, blue-toned mane shimmering slightly. "I was thinking and not watching where I was going... Please accept my apology. You are not hurt I hope?"

Drifa gathered up the project and put it back at the entrance of her den so it would be out of the way. "I think perhaps you need someone to talk to if you have so much on your mind that it distracts you." The female settled herself in front of the male and offered him a bowl of fermented fruit. "Perhaps you would like to have a drink and tell me about it?" That didn't sound right did it? Crap. "Not that I would expect you to wish to tell me your personal business... sorry, I am a little out of practice talking to anyone. I have been too busy trying to become a crafter like my mother in hopes that it would increase my chances of finding a husband." And she had done it again. She really needed to get her mind back in proper conversation mode.

Drifa could not take back any of what she had just said, so she braced herself for the male to run off. Several others had at the mere mention of her looking for a husband. She cleared her throat and looked at the ground at her paws. "I do apologize for being in your way. A Freeborn probably should not be causing an interruption to a Reaver's day." She was sure she had seen him on the training grounds, and that meant he was no mere freeborn like herself. Now if she could just recall his name. It took her a moment, but it came to her.

"You are Reaver Aksel? That handsome green pelt makes you easy to spot at least.... although, with has handsome as you are, i am sure you have a wife waiting for you to return to your den. I should only be so lucky to have a male half as handsome and strong." Drifa was getting a bit of her charm back, but she still expected him to take off at any moment. She had found that the warriors seemed to be half afraid of having a wife, or already taken. Either one was not good for her prospects of getting a male to call her own.

He watched as she gathered up the bits of sinew and bone. He eyed it, hoping that he hadn’t actually broken it, but he was no crafter and honestly he couldn’t tell. It was in bits, but that meant nothing if she was still putting it together, right? Pushing the worry aside he looked up at her as she settled in front of him expectantly. “Uh..” He mumbled, dropping his gaze to the bowl she pushed towards him. But before he could say anything else, or indeed think anything else, she was speaking again. Man did this girl talk! He watched her as she chatted on, trying to make sure he missed none of it but.. she kept going. Aksel himself was hardly a sparkling conversationalist, his typical day consisted of maybe a handful of words that weren’t grunts. The rest of the time? His paws generally did his talking for him. Not that he was dim witted. He had been told many times growing up that he was actually pretty smart, if he just used his head sometimes. And sure, he could see the logic in thinking things through. But he was a reaver. It was a role that didn’t require a lot of thinking, or talking for that matter. Maybe he was out of practice? Actually, the longest conversation he had in.. well forever, was with his sister. And that had been more of a shouting match than a logical argument.

Focus, he reminded himself, carefully watching her expression for any clue as to how to react to her story. Did she want sympathy? Or was she the type to get all angry and demand that ‘she was just as good as any male’. He never did understand why they did that… pull the ‘don’t talk down to me card’ when a male tried to help them. Not everyone, granted, but some of them seemed to make it their life’s mission to find and pick on males. But this one didn’t seem like that, in fact she looked kind of embarrassed. That was his cue to say something reassuring.

“No apologies needed. It was my fault for not looking.” There, that was ok right? And hadn’t there been a few questions in there as well? Crafter.. mother.. husband, got it. “Crafting is a worthwhile pursuit, even if it doesn’t find you a husband. After all, what would us reavers do with all the junk we bring back if there were no crafters around to turn it into trinkets we can wear?” He hoped that sounded supportive. He didn’t want to upset her or anything. She looked kind of forlorn and lonely, come to think of it. Now, what was a pretty young thing like her doing on her own? She was the kind of lioness he had wanted for a sister, someone sweet and kind and with a useful talent. Someone a reaver can be proud of to take to wife, someone he can fight for and someone he can come home to at the end of the day.

He at least remembered to nod when she guessed his name, and he was really kind of flattered she knew it. He was just a reaver.. big, strong, but certainly no Captain. Most of the ladies seem to prefer a male with a bigger title than his own. Not that he had really been looking… he had been too busy keeping his war-brother from killing or being killed by, Ragnvard, and keeping tabs on his sister and chasing away any unsuitable males trying to court her. Which reminded him… She had asked what had him so distracted him hadn’t she, he should probably answer that.

“I’m worried about my sister, but she refuses to listen to me. You are a female… what would you do? She has been seen with my war-brother, another reaver, but I don’t like it. Ronan is a good lion but he is involved in a blood feud with his actual brother. I don’t want her to get in the middle of that… She will get herself killed.” He looked at her expectantly, then recalled something else. “Oh, and I’m not married.” That was probably a weird way to drop that little tid-bit, but Aksel seemed oblivious to the connotations in his words, still studying the female in hopes she had some insight into his sibling problem.

Drifa held her head tilted to one side as she listened to what the male had to say to her. He had seemed more than a bit lost as she was rambling, and she wondered if he really heard most of what she had said. He seemed to respond well enough that he must have been paying attention, but she still wondered. Perhaps it was he was just being polite. She liked his version of polite since he hadn't gone running off like so many others had. She just had a horrible time keeping reavers and captains around. Then again, she couldn't really fight much at all, another thing her mother had on her. How her mother could be good at fighting, at least good enough to join the pride after growing up in the roguelands was beyond Drifa.

Drifa's mother was such a sweet female, always kind and even treated her lioness slave like a trusted friend, and yet unless one counted how she had her cubs, nobody took advantage of Drifa's mother. Drifa on the other paw could not fight, and often found that she was thought less of by others for trying to be kind or sweet, or they just didn't want to be around her. How did her mother manage to be so perfect? The young lioness would never understand it, or why her mother seemed happy without a husband. That was weird too.

"You are trying to make me feel better... that is really sweet." And not what she had expected at all from the male. "You are right, of course, but really I want someone to spend my time with... someone to make things for... i am rather lonely and always have been." She and her siblings had been raised more as much by their mother's slave as by their mother. Their mother was THAT into her crafting. Come to think of it, Drifa thought that might be why her mother was happy without a husband. She was pretty much married to her crafting. It explained so much, but it sounded like Drifa wasn't the only one with family issues.

Drifa couldn't help but feel sorry for this male. He was worried about his sister, and yet he missed so much in his concern. He believed he could change his sister's mind if he talked to her, but Drifa knew that if it was SHE that found a strong male who cared for her, she would never back down or leave him. That was probably exactly what Aksel's sister felt about this Ronan. The lioness wondered if she really was the one that should be telling this reaver he should back off his sister, but she felt she needed to do so. It was only fair that he know.

"I am sorry, but I don't think there is anything you can do except to offer your sister support when she needs it. If she has found a male that she wishes to be with, and whom wishes to be with her, she is not going to back off just because her brother worries. She probably is listening to everything you say just not following it." Drifa had done that with her siblings when they told her not to worry so much about finding a husband. She listened to EVERY word they said but just didn't do what they wanted. It was something males and females were good at doing. "I think perhaps you are going to need to change tactics to keep her safe."

"Tell your sister that while you do not approve of her being involved with Ronan, you will support her choices. Explain to her, calmly, your concerns about this blood feud, and tell her that your den is always a home for her and a shelter from this if she needs it. I think if she feels you will back her up even if you don't like her decision, she will be more likely to stay closer to you, which keeps her further from the danger." Drifa wished she could comfort this male more, snuggle up to him or something, but all she could do was offer her opinion. She almost missed his comment about not being married in her focus on trying to help him. She blinked and looked at him in disbelief. "You are not married? You are a strong, sweet, kind reaver with obvious good family skills by the fact that you care so much for your sister, and yet you have no wife. That is a crime." The female was left more than a little shocked by the revelation.

Shaking his head he seemed to refuse her statement. He wasn’t trying to make her feel better about it, he just said what he thought. Usually that got him into trouble, and was the reason why he generally didn’t talk much. He usually said something wrong and get shouted at by some irate female or something.. But it seemed that this time he had said something right. He was glad, either way, that she was still smiling at him. He didn’t want to upset her. She was too nice to be crying.

“I can’t believe you are on your own.” He blurted, immediately wishing he hadn’t. Of course he had upset her now, refusing to believe what she was saying. But truly, how had no reaver claimed her yet? A wife who would be at home, who would wait for a reaver despite the amount of time they spent away from home. And she was talented. Truly, his fellow reavers must be thicker than he had thought, if they were overlooking this sweet female.

His musing thoughts were dragged back when Drifa continued. His ears pressed back in worry as she talked. Surely his sister wouldn’t want to put herself in danger! But… now that he thought about it, that was exactly what Audlin would do. She was a smart, brave and infuriatingly confident lioness who drove him mad with her lack of self-care. But… he would not change her for the world. Sighing heavily he dropped his head, staring mournfully at his paws. “She used to be so …. Obliging.” He sighed, regretfully. “She would hang onto my every word and follow me round. She was the most adorable cub. What happened…” Shaking his head he looked back up at the lioness before him. “What you said… it makes sense. Will you come with me and tell that to her? I don’t… I get all mixed up when she argues with me.” Dropping his hindquarters to the ground he sighed heavily again, his worries weighing down on him and his realisation that he couldn’t protect his sister from herself.

"I do not know how well she will take to a stranger being involved in this, but I will help if I can. I know how important family is." How many times did Drifa argue with her mother about needing a mate before she learned to let it go? Her mother did not want a mate, and did not care what others thought of her having a litter of cubs to some unknown sire. Just like this male, Drifa had to figure out that one cannot force family to do what they do not wish to do.

"As to me being on my own... most Reavers or Captains wish to sire cubs wherever they can. It is a simple thing to understand... I just have to find one, just one that does not think that way." Drifa was determined she WOULD find one of those that was still single. They could not all be mated already, especially since there were always new Reavers being trained. She would focus on building her crafting skills, and hopefully find one of those males eventually. Maybe even a male like this one? Who knew? For now, she would help him.
