Pride/Pack History:
Many, many years ago an elephant killed a lion at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Normally this would be considered the fate of the gods and forgotten. However, this wasn't an ordinary lion. This lion was the son of Jelani, king of the Wenye Ujuzi Mwindaji, a pride of lions known across the savanna for their skilled hunters. Jelani was overcome with such grief at the loss of his only son that he vowed vengeance upon the behemoth that took his son's life needlessly. A hunt was arranged to track the elephant to bring it down. Many volunteered to go and the king himself soon led more than half the pride on the trail of the elephant. The sheer number of lions made the hunt a success and the bounty of food that followed fed the pride for a week without one belly going hungry.

For the rest of Jelani's reign elephants were hunted and killed on the anniversary of his son's death, but when the old king finally passed on the tradition was forgotten. It wasn't until a rogue joined a generation later and told the pride of the stories she had heard growing up of the 'elephant seekers', a pride of lions so strong they could take down an elephant without losing one member, that they rekindled the old custom. The new king, Zakia, proclaimed that there would now be two hunts a year rather than the traditional one. The first would take place on the anniversary of the prince's death and the second would take place after the first rain ended the dry season.

It didn't take long for that first rain to come. The hunt was on and destruction followed. Only a handful of lions returned from the hunt, Zakia among them although he was gravely injured. He forbade any hunting of elephants until tactics could be made to make the attack less dangerous. There would certainly be casualties, he knew, but the loss of life that had happened this time couldn't be repeated.

The hunts were put on hold for years. Zakia, grey and limping with age, finally allowed the hunts to resume after the numbers in the pride grew and their hunting style was tailored to bringing down something as large as their target. He died peacefully after the first successful hunt.

Now the pride has been hunting elephants for years. It's still a dangerous task, but they have mastered the ways in bringing elephants down. They pride themselves on their cunning and courage and hold their traditions close to their hearts. After the passing of Zakia they changed their name from Wenye Ujuzi Mwindaji to Tembo Mtafuta after the name the rogue lioness had called them all those generations ago. The Elephant Seekers.
Pride Beliefs

On non-lions: Non-lions are welcome to visit the pride and no prejudice is held against them, but they are not allowed to join.

On breeding: Rogue breeding is frowned heavily upon for females. OOCly it's fine if you have plot reasons, but know that the pride members won't look kindly upon your lioness or her cubs and some might even try to drive them out. For males, as long as the cubs don't show up later it's fine. If they do show up it's very likely the king will chase them off, if not engage them in combat. Hybrid breeding is not allowed. If a female has hybrid cubs they will be forced from the pride, along with the mother. If a male's cubs show up and are hybrids, they will be chased off, along with the father. There are limited choices for breeding in this pride as only the king and the select few males that have proven themselves worthy of fighting with the females are allowed to breed, but the males are constantly circulating in and out of power so it keeps the gene pool fairly fresh. If numbers dwindle the king will allow rogue breeding, but there will be a notice before hand.

On coloration: All colors are welcome but only lions of natural hues are allowed to hunt. All unnaturally colored lions must remain as the default rank. If you have questions about the coloration of your lion feel free to ask. If there is a very small amount of unnatural coloration on your lion (10% or less) they might be able to prove themselves worthy to be a hunter, but they'll probably get tested a lot by the other hunters to make sure they're not a weakness. That being said, unnatural colored lions aren't looked down on for the way they look.

On gods/deities: The pride is aware of the existence of gods but they don't have any in particular that they worship. Lions are free to do as they please in terms of believing or not believing.

On homosexual relationships: As the pride is majorly female and very few of the males are allowed to breed, it's not uncommon for females and males to pair up with each other. While there are no official 'life mates' in this pride due to the nature of breeding, there are certainly lions that will raise cubs together and spend time with each other as if they were mated.

On hunting: Each cub born into the pride is prepped from birth to be a skilled hunter. If a cub has too much unnatural coloration on their pelts their teaching will divert once they hit adolescence. They will be taught how to take care of cubs, keep the pride in check, and how to fight should the need arise. The natural colored cubs will be taught the tricks of the pride in bringing down huge prey animals like elephants, as well as general hunting skills for normal prey. They must go out once they become adults and make a kill on their own before they can be accepted back into the pride as a hunter.

On males: The population of the pride is predominantly females. Ideally there will be a 10:1 ratio within the pride. This means most males, once they reach adulthood, will have to leave the pride. Depending on how many males are in the pride at the time they can be allowed to stay. If there are too many that want to stay, they must fight to determine who gets the honor of staying. There are a select amount of these males that get to breed, though. The honor to do so must be won on a hunting party during the two elephant hunts every year.

On females: Females are the brain and the brawn of the pride as a whole. While they don't technically rule it, everyone knows that it's the hunt leaders that are the driving force behind everything the pride does. Females are treated with great respect and reverence, especially the old ones that have seen many things in their life. When carrying cubs they are taken care of by the Kukaa so they are calm and comfortable which is believed to produce stronger litters.

Hunting Elephants

There are two hunts per year, one at the start of the dry season and one at the start of the rainy season. Each hunt requires at least fifteen lions and the knowledge that they might not return from the hunt. It is a great honor to go on one of these hunts and the more a lion goes on, the more respect they gain from the rest of the pride. The hunts are not always successful but going on a hunt and coming back alive, regardless if the elephant is killed, is considered a victory. If the elephant is killed the meat is divided among the pride and the bones are given to those who participated to be made into trinkets to mark their victory on the hunt.

Ranks

Kiongozi: This is the king of the pride. This is not a position of birthright anymore. The king earns his title by his performance in the hunts and holds it until his death or until he can no longer hunt. It is always held by a male and is a limited rank. (1/1)

Uwezo: This rank is reserved for males that have proven themselves in the hunts and are allowed to breed. Generally the next Kiongozi is taken by a Uwezo. This rank is earned through RP and is a limited rank. (0/?)

Mkuu'Mwindaji: This rank is for the females that organize and lead all hunts. As the bulk of the pride is female, the tactical leaders are always lady lions. Males have the muscle but females have the brains. This rank is earned through RP and is a limited rank. (0/?)

Mwindaji: This is the hunter rank and can be held by males or females, although males who hold this roll cannot breed. They are the hunters, the warriors, the strength of the pride and the ones that rogues and other prides speak highly of their exploits. This rank can only be achieved with a solo hunt RP, but otherwise is unlimited. (0/?)

Kukaa: This rank is the default and applies to all lions with unnatural coloration or for natural colored lions who don't wish to hunt. This is the rank for babysitters, den keepers, healers, story tellers, any other job you could think of. They all have some form of training in fighting to protect the pride should an attack come from outside, but rarely do they have to use or practice these skills. This rank is unlimited. (0/?)

Utafiti: This is the rank all adols claim as they begin to study their chosen or determined ranks. It is unlimited. (0/?)

Ndogo: This is the rank all cubs claim. It is unlimited. (0/?)
