Live Action TV
Battlestar Galactica (2004) - Scifi series with themes of technology vs. humanity, religion v. science, cyclical destiny, predetermined roles, and it's own vast mythology. Mature rating for violence and sexual themes. Twin Peaks (1990) - A murder brings a lone federal agent to a small town that isn't quite what it seems. Mystery, spookiness, and trippy things that aren't always what they seem. LOST (2004) - Plane crash survivors find themselves on an island that isn't at all what it seems. Mystery, supernatural, character driven, adult themes, cyclical destiny themes, and it's own mythology Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) - Revolves around a girl destined to fight supernatural creatures on behalf of humanity and the town she lives in which is a hub of all things spooky. Sense8 (2015) - A great show, also done by the same ladies who did Cloud Atlas. Themes of politics, identity, sexuality, AIDS, gender and religion, and also representation of LGBT characters & PoC. Stranger Things - A gang of plucky youngsters (and some grownups) try to solve the mystery of their friend's disappearance into the "Upsidedown". Warnings for frequent jump scares, violence, and gore. The Magicians - Adapted from a book series by Lev Grossman. A grad student obsessed with his favorite book series discovers that magic is real and he's a magician. He may also have a mysterious villain out to get him. Includes concepts of magic, other worlds, traveling between planes, and time looping in attempts to SAVE EVERYONE. TW: occasional body horror, magical violence, blood and gore, also issues of sexual and physical assault and abuse.
Movies
Cloud Atlas (2012) - An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future. Based off of the novel of the same name. Themes of reincarnation, spirituality, destiny, sci-fi and fantasy. Adult themes. Jupiter Ascending (2015) - Another work by the Wachowski sisters. Campy sci-fi fun. Interesting background/story which is unfortunately not as developed as it could be.
Animation
Over the Garden Wall (2014) - Two brothers make their way through a mysterious forest trying to get home with little memory of how they got there. Spoopy, interesting 'monsters', total otherashdown vibes. Also mildly music themed.Gravity Falls (2012) - Twins Dipper and Mabel are sent to live with their great uncle for the summer in the weird town of Gravity Falls. 2 seasons.
Games
Alan Wake (2010) - A writer goes to a strange small town with his wife - only to have her disappear. Pursuing her reveals the town has more to it than it seems. Story driven horror, psychological, spooky but not bloody or gorey. Mostly darkness/jump scares - Shooter elements and simple problem solving. Life Is Strange - Slice of Life-y Video Game set in a small college town in the Northwest. Time travel shenanigans and a slow-burn mystery plot that unfolds over five episodes. Triggers for teenagers engaging in smoking/drinking/sex, discussion of drug use, some light physical violence and some heavy sexual violence. Until Dawn - Horror game set up a bit like a movie. There is no save or load, your decisions are permanent and mark the characters life or death. A group of young people visit a mountain cabin on the 1st anniversary of their friends death. HORROR ENSUES (is it a ghost? a psycho killer? monsters? Native american mystics? COULD BE ANY AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS). Definite scares.. including violence and gore. The Secret World, as well as its related games The Park, and more loosely, The Black Watchmen - TSW takes place in a modern setting with 'a secret paranormal world' tucked in among the normal things. Magical secret societies deal with the supernatural things. TSW itself has a few horror elements to it, the Park is definitely a creepy horror game dealing with the past of one area of TSW, and TBW is an alternate reality puzzle type game that may involve emailing sites set up specifically for the game. Oxenfree - Spooky, story-focused game about high schoolers on a deserted island where ~weird stuff~ is happening.
Podcasts
The Black Tapes - Creepy mysteries, that seem scattered at first but there are implications that there is much more to it that is yet to be solidly confirmed. Tanis - Are they seeking eternal life? or finding horror and damnation? The quest for this strange moving place that has such terrible events connected with it's very presence is on. Welcome to Night Vale - A twice monthly podcast about the small desert town of Night Vale and it's strange goings on. Alice Isn't Dead - Horror, Mystery, missing persons, death of a civilian in the first episode. If you are sensitive to horror this is not for you, or at least be careful. Lore - It is not a serial narrative, but a show that covers various myths, stories and legends. Vampires, werewolves, changelings, and unsolved crimes are just a few of the topics touched on. Most of the material is based around real world accounts and the point of view is very much grounded in reality, but without the harsh lens of skepticism. Warning: many of the topics involve real world deaths and tragedies, and exploring horrors inspired by human fear and prejudice.
Internets
SCP Foundation - The different entries of things in the database have a very Other Ashdown feel. Entries can be mythical, paranormal, sci-fi -- it varies. Caution- User submitted content that may be nightmare fuel or triggerworthy. Creepypasta - More user submitted spooky and scary things database. Caution - User submitted content may contain nightmare fuel or be triggerworthy. Calgary Gideon Keys and Glasgow Gideon Keys - (creepypasta/short form fiction) Some good spooks about a series of supernatural items/phenomena purported to exist in Calgary and Glasgow. I haven't read as much of Calgary's as I have of Glasgow's, but there's some real good stuff in there. Serious body horror warnings for a few of the stories though, tread with caution friends. Chilling Tales for Dark Nights (website & youtube) - Standard warnings about some of this being creepypastas that are narrated but there are several stories that they have brought to life that very much embody the feel and lore of Ashdown. It's not just horror but also science fiction, mystery, and that feeling that you really should have left well enough alone and you didn't. Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows - A collection of words describing feelings... that you didn't quite know there were words for.
Webcomics
Ava's Demon - Really beautiful in terms of artwork, and it has a lot of mythical/magic-y feels. Plus themes on religion, death, pact making, and of course, demons. Deep Dark Fears - Creepy comic to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Some curiously soothing. Behind You - the creepier version of the above Wilde Life - A very normal man moves to a new house in what seems a small and peaceful town, from there, it proves anything BUT normal. Ghosts, witches, werewolves, Baba Yaga and more. May have gore warnings. All Night Laundry - Horror, blood, injury, time travel, consequences, transgender characters, gay characters, murderers and super creepy cool nope creatures. Its interactive!! Katherine Quest - to quote the author's description: 'a fox who lives in a swamp wakes to find her husband gone, and goes on a journey to find her missing heart, which he took with him. Warnings for: intimate partner abuse, blood, self-harm, brief slurs, brief but graphic mention of rape, drowning; heavy warning for suicide.'
Manga
Fuan no Tane - Prepared to be a wee bit spooked. Or lot bit spooked. Or unsettled. It’s a collection of very short and mostly atmospheric stories dealing with urban legends, ghosts and superstitions all organized around a themes (each 'chapter' is a theme and each story is only a few pages long)
Books & Authors
A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin- Also known as 'Game of Thrones'. Lots of magic/mythical stuff. Tons of political drama & interesting characters. Can be violent & graphic & everyone dies. Trigger warnings for gore and descriptive (sometimes forced) sexual content. Juliet Marillier - A lot of her stuff is heavily influenced by Celtic mythology/history, but not of her work is. Historical fantasy in terms of genre. Lots of influence with Fae/other creatures & heavy on magic and deal-making.
Music
Insect Musicians by Graeme Revell - A symphony made up from insect sounds from around the world, it's at times as playful as it is eerie and entirely a curious, atmospheric listen. Warning: insect sounds and stills. The music might create a very tense, on edge feeling at times. Goodbye to a World by Porter Robinson - "This song always makes me cry, honestly, but I was listening to it a lot towards the end of the October-December 2016 meta; given our creation of a world that's our own (albeit in a dubious sense), a lot of the lyrics are uncomfortably spot-on. The song also has a very heavy sense of tension and weight to it, as the lyrics steadily become more distorted before eventually becoming nothing but noise at the end."
Shep's Personal Inspiration Corner
"I think you can take this gif to stand for Nature as distinguished from God. Huge, boisterous, full of vitality, dancing with a hundred legs, bright with the glare of the sun, and at first sight, somewhat regardless of us and our desires. But you will note that I hold that when the mask of Nature is lifted, you find God behind." -Respected orthodox writer, GK Chesterton
