    the horrors.

When you roll your 1D6, these are the things that are are going bump in the night and trying to scare you.

1 - A puppy and a kitten hiding under a witch’s hat. They are horribly cute and playing together.
2 - Snek. A big snek. It might want to eat you.
3 - A clown. He smiles. There are too many teeth.
4 - A scarecrow. It’s eyes glow eerily and it never stops laughing. It’s mocking you.
5 - A nurse. She cries. Blood leaks from her eyes and off of her hands.
6 - Your shadow grows behind you, taking shape into something eldritch and unspeakable.

    the rooms.

      ROOM ONE
It’s a hallway. There is only one way to go and you’re not sure how it even works because you could have sworn there were windows on either side that looked into a living room. A table sits to the side, a rocking chair next to it. The lights flicker and go out. It’s when they come back on that you realize you’re not alone.

Something is behind you and a door down the way creaks open.

      ROOM TWO
Lightning flashes across the sky and you can see it through the skylights that are part of the ceiling of this room. It’s a dining room with wax figures sitting at the table and forever caught in what looks like an animated discussion of politics.

You assume it’s politics. There’s a television in the corner that looks like there’s a debate playing. It’s possibly scarier than what appears next as you turn your gaze to the door that opens.

      ROOM THREE
... it’s a room of ghosts, actual ghosts. Except that they’re college students lounging about on couches. One of them is doing caricatures and another pair plays beer bong. You’re absolutely not interesting to them at all. There’s another ghost in the corner by the door that opens. It seems kind of pervy.

Also it’s pointing to something behind you.

      ROOM FOUR
Somehow you’ve found yourself in a garden?! Fog rolls in and despite looking you cannot, for the life of you, find the fog machine. The moon is strangely full (even if it’s not the night of the full moon) and it’s reflection is clear in the water of the fountain in front of you.

A pair of skeletons sit together on a bench, their heads together as if they died while conversing with each other. You ignore them until you hear bones creak and they both point to the hidden doorway that leads out.

This time it’s something out of the corner of your eye that catches you off guard as you’re trying to slip away.

      ROOM FIVE
You enter a pitch black room. The floor seems to feel solid and flat under your feet but waving your arms touches nothing. There is music blasting and the chaotic sound of many people talking; the noises of a party. You don’t touch or bump anyone, though as you walk voices get closer and farther to your ears as if you are truly passing through a crowd.

The techno music comes to a head, there is a siren, a sudden light goes off revealing the exit. The invisible crowd cheers but something grabs you before you reach the door ...

    the outcomes.

Exiting the final room puts you right back outside. A chill goes up your spine as a voice whispers in your ear, “Not bad, not bad ... I’ll have to do one better next year. Hopefully you’ll enjoy your prize.”

Should you become too scared in any of the above rooms, when you go through the door to the next one you will find yourself back outside. The house is dark, the door won’t open, but there is a bag of candy and a commemorative photo of you (and friends) waiting for you upon exiting. Later on you’ll notice a note pinned to your back that reads: BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR.

Acacia hadn't been sleeping so well lately. For a while, she'd been able to deal with that from the comfort of her own apartment, but after a while it had been inevitable that she'd stray from it in search of distraction. She'd taken to walks, in the end, and hand waved them when she or anyone close to her had doubts for her reasoning by pointing out that night was the best time to see the Halloween decorations everyone was putting up as the month drew closer and closer to its end. That was true enough, though, and especially when it came to this house in particular.

She couldn't recall ever seeing it before in the light of day despite its obvious age, which set off several warning bells, but it was decorated the same way many of the other houses she passed had been and there was nothing particularly troubling about the sign outside it, even. Haunted house attractions were nothing new. She stood outside it for a long time, watching for anything out of place while she made her decision without ever being sure exactly what would constitute "out of place".

Finally, with a quick glance around and then another doubtful one up at the house, she moved forward to ascend the porch steps and make her way inside. Though she'd braced herself to be ready to run once inside, the first room was nothing special. Just a hallway, actually, which...wasn't quite what she'd expected from the windows outside. The most interesting thing in sight was a table and a rocking chair, so...

The lights flickered then, and when they came back on there was a sound of movement from behind. Without hesitation, she whirled to face it and was struck with complete confusion to find no one there. When the sound came again, her gaze dropped to follow it to its source. A witch's hat and beneath it...

"That's adorable." She cooed, dropping to pet the puppy and kitten. Well now she felt silly for being worried at all. Laughing, the woman stood and turned back, heading towards a door that must have been propped open while her back was turned. If these were the kind of scares the house had in store for her, she couldn't wait to see the next.

It was odd to see lightning flash from inside an inner room of the house, but the reason for it was immediately clear as she moved further in. Skylights took up a part of the ceiling here and she took her time in admiring them before dropping her eyes to take in the scene that this stage of the house provided. Wax figures were always a bit creepy, she had to admit, but this just looked like...well, like a bunch of people caught in the middle of a talk. There was a debate playing on a tv nearby, so maybe the figures were meant to be talking politics?

She wasn't really sure how any of this was supposed to be scary, but the adorable puppy and kitten had followed her into the room so she took another moment to indulge in petting them. Idly as she did so, she glanced back up at the ceiling. She hadn't considered it before, but...had it been about to storm before she'd come in here?

She shrugged the thought off, though, and with a final pat for both her new friends, she stood to try the next door.

Things did get a little more exciting in the third room, at least, but somehow Acacia couldn't help feeling very underwhelmed regardless. The ghosts of college students playing games with each other and lounging about were interesting, but still not at all scary. They didn't pay her any attention, certainly didn't try to scare her, and after a moment of glancing them over, she turned her attention skyward again to look for the projector that was no doubt responsible for them. She couldn't see anything, but it was hard to in any way believe they were real.

When one finally did seem to look at her, it was only to point at something behind her. Which only really cemented her decision that it was only a projection pointing vaguely in the direction a guest might be standing. She glanced back obligingly anyway, and found only the puppy and kitten dragging their witch's hat along as they played.

"Yes, still very cute." She hummed, and then she crossed the room to the door, paying the ghosts no mind.

Now this was interesting. Somehow she'd stepped right into a garden, though no matter how she wrapped her mind around the possible layout of the house made this make the least bit of sense. She'd be tempted to congratulate the home owner's decorating abilities if it weren't for the fact that the moon overhead meant she was very definitely outside now. Fog crept across the ground throughout the garden, another oddity, but her eyes kept drawing back up to that moon.

It hadn't been that full, had it? And hadn't it been about to storm? Biting her lip, she started to make her way across the room, keeping an eye out for the fog machine at least, for a door back inside definitely. Instead she found a pair of skeletons on the bench, heads bent together as if they'd been speaking to one another. She was edging around them, keeping her distance in case of a potential jump scare, when she heard their bones creak. A glance back found them pointing, and a turn of the head revealed the door she'd been seeking. How had she missed that?

"Thank you." She gave them a cautious nod and then moved towards it, glancing back at them in quick intervals. It was as she was glancing back that movement in the fog caught her eye. Apprehension returning very quickly, she looked for the source and then let out a breathless laugh of relief to find it was only the puppy and kitten again.

"Are you two going to just follow me around everywhere?" Shaking her head, she knelt to reach out for them, coaxing them closer. When they moved again, though, it was a strange jumbled thing that sent her spiraling into confusion and then, finally, utter terror. They'd both been darkly colored, she'd known, but now the inky black of their fur seemed to shift and writhe as they both turned to shadow and grew and grew and grew.

Acacia's eyes went wide, her breathing quick and uncontrollable, as she lifted her head to watch the thing loom higher and higher over her. Too afraid to suck in the breath to even scream, she stumbled to her feet and threw herself towards the doorway.

The next room was pitch black and Acacia was afraid. Music blasted all around her. Voices chattered in what little space between the beat there was. The floor was solid, not ground, but she could neither see nor feel anything else as she hurried through the darkness. She didn't know what she was running towards, but she was all too aware of what she'd left behind. For a few moments that stretched out for a lifetime, she wondered if this invisible party even had an end.

Then the siren. She pressed her hands over her ears, heart pounding, and was relieved beyond belief when a light showed the way to the exit. She ran for it without hesitation as cheers went up and then began to fade, but before she could reach it there was another sudden sound that she couldn't keep from hearing. Had that been...oh God, that had been a bark. Gasping in a breath, she glanced back.

A puppy and a kitten played adorably beneath a witch's hat. With a shriek, the woman ran outside as if her life depended on it.
