Time was running out. Shun knew this. Saving Pax likely had something to do with the charter that Jeremiah and Shiloh were dealing with, but he wondered if waiting to be called upon for assistance wasn't the way to go. It had been awhile, and in the very least he felt he should check up on the Peaceful One. Healing him was unlikely, but maybe he could buy him some more time.

Giving him some of his magic straight up hadn't worked. The void within Pax was far too large. Maybe there was something else he could do in the meantime.

He had a couple of ideas.

So here he was, headed to the nest where he had left Pax before. He wasn't sure what he should be expecting.

Sonny was there. Their hands were sunk into the blood-soaked dirt. Their teeth were clenched tightly; they didn't seem all that aware of anything around them. Except the moment Shun stepped into the clearing, they looked up. "Oh," they said. "Do you know what you're going to do?"

Shun lifted his head and eyed Sonny as he noticed them with their hands dug into the dirt. It appeared to be... bloody. He briefly thought back to the chunk of texts Renard had gotten. Was Sonny there when Sunny had been killed?

"Somewhat... A few of the others are fetching a charter that has to do with Melany and the deer triplets. Fixing or altering that should help him too... but I felt that waiting to see what to do with that may cause us to run out of time."

He stepped on over and crouched down, tiling his head at the bloodied earth.

"What are you doing?"

"Trying to extend the magic," said Sonny. "You are out of time. I have to come here every day and do this just to buy him a little more time." They sighed, frustrated. "I told you all the fifteenth of March!"

They leaned harder on their hands like they could make the blood spread faster that way.

"You just need to cut him off from the magic for now," they said, "then it'd stop draining him or whatever it's doing, I don't know what else to even do about it."

"s**t..." Shun breathed out. He went ahead and removed the eyepatch for now. Being able to see Pax and Sunny's 'inner darkness' probably won't help much here but maybe it would be of some assistance. He didn't have too many innate tools for the job.

"I did... have an idea for something like that," he muttered, "Filling the void within him is too much for me... but maybe I... we... can close it off. Somehow. A barrier."

Seeing all the blood in the earth, he went ahead and called forth his shadowed dagger. The edge of the blade rested against his left palm as he was ready to slice it open.

I dunno if the eye would show him anything of note, but it's uncovered now.

The thing was, the shadowed eye didn't seem to detect anything different at first. That lasted one, maybe two blinks, and then the clearing warped. Through his human eye, Shun could see things as they had been. Sonny kneeling in the dirt, Pax pale and listless in his nest of tree roots. Through the other, Sonny didn't look human. There was some kind of esoteric geometry, circles and watching eyes and a roiling darkness. Flickers of something long-lost darted between corners. Somewhere, darker than the other darkness, the sky overhead turned with unnamed stars.

Pax wasn't there at all.

"Yeah?" It sounded like English. The thing-that-was-Sonny spun faster. "It can't hurt to try. He's going to die if we don't do something."

It was already weird seeing things through both eyes, but the stark difference in what he saw with Sonny and Pax was very disorienting. With most people, the darkness he saw within them still had a fairly human form with inky blackness doing s**t in their bodies.

Sonny was a completely different story.

He found himself staring at them, trying to comprehend what the ******** he was looking at when their voice snapped him out of it. He could try to figure that out later. More pressing things were at hand.

"Right. Right."

He closed both eyes. The fact that Pax wasn't visible with his shadow eye was concerning. The last time he saw someone who was there but not there depending on which eye he viewed them with was the specter of another version of him.

"Going to focus now. Attempting to place a barrier around the void or wherever the 'leak' is," he stated, reaching out to place a hand onto Pax's shoulder. He began to try and sense or envision that abyss he had found in him earlier. Once he found the problem, he could move on from there. Otherwise he'd place his 'barrier' in the wrong place and nothing would change.

Shun found the abyss easily. How could he miss it? There were pieces of chain still floating there, looking for their couples. It was endless and depthless, continued on forever.

The thing that was Sonny said, So what are you going to do?

Shun gritted his teeth as the abyss came into 'view'. There was a few things he could try doing here. Encasing the abyss didn't seem possible since he didn't even see the edges. Same for if he were to attempt to anchor the chain to any of the sides.

So instead, he attempted to connect the chain to itself. Mend it by making it whole onto itself if possible. He focused on trying to fix any missing chunks so that the chain could form a circle.

The chain kind of... wiggled. Then, sudden as the snap of a whip, it curled up tight into a circle, the pieces falling together in some kind of strange jittery dance.

Shun had succeeded, but at what?

Shun saw the chain begin to fall. Quickly, he began to reshift his focus to try and place a barrier around the chain, with the intent on allowing it to float on its own in the abyss. To hopefully keep it from falling forever.

It worked. Shun managed to catch the chain, and then there was a terrible feeling of vacuum, of utter emptiness, before a wave washed in to create a sort of... plate... beneath his barrier.

Let go, said Sonny. That's really helpful. I've got it shored up. Can you let go without hurting yourself?

Well. Shun could certainly try.

Carefully, he began to pull away to try and release his hold now.

They inched in below him, keeping the chain safely up. Okay, okay, okay--and go!

Shun has managed to successfully extricate himself. However, over the next few days of game time, he will develop a migraine that will not pass until he takes a nap.

Shun opened both of his eyes and let out a breath. He tried not to look at Sonny right now and instead focused on Pax.

"You said that helped... What did I manage to do for him exactly?"

Made it so he didn't need to be bound to something? Something else?
