The cold was different, but it wasn't a bad different. Still, the fact her nose was nothing but snot wasn't exactly something she was enjoying. Clearly she'd been in the south too long. Tossing her head the glowing red eyes of the flightless winged mare peered through the white wall of dancing snow.

                          She was no longer alone.

"Greetings and welcome!" Lyra called, speaking loud to be heard above the snow. She turned sideways to offer the stranger the cloak she carried on her back: it was fine and thick, and her steps were slowed by the weight of it. Her parents kept many pelts of similar make for these purposes, for visitors from the summer lands were not uncommon. "Are you new?"

Her voice was polite, her eyes inquisitive, but she knew perfectly well the answer to her own question, for other colts and fillies had spoken in hushed tones of the augur that heralded bad omens.

What a curious cape, she wondered if she hunted it herself, for that would be a tale she'd like to hear. "What have it away."

Her voice was flat and eyes flickered as she watched her. She gladly took the cape though and tossed it over her useless wings. They'd never hold her weight, she was half tempted to rip them off one day.

"No need for idle chatter my child, is there a hearth nearby?" She wanted to get warm and have some food perhaps . "I can trade knowledge in return if payment is needed."

"Why, it was your coat, my lady," Lyra joked. She was nobly born and bred, and though her schooling made her more well-spoken, perhaps, than others her age, it did nothing to quell her mischief. "If this were not your first time here, I would have seen you before—even leagues away."

The pelt was sized for an adult and practically engulfed the adolescent mare, making her seem younger than she was. Her premonitions, too, seemed less foreboding than the other children had made it out to be, and Lyra smiled to herself. She would look into what darkness awaited her future, and impress her friends with her daring.

"Oh! Yes, just this way," she said, leading the mare to the shelter of the cave. It was large and cavernous, built into the mountain itself, but few who came here would ever see its full glory. It was their family's home—their final line of defense—and they protected its secrets well.

"You may stay for the night if it pleases you, and there is meat and stew there. It is freely given, but..." she paused, suddenly apprehensive. Only the mare's words about idle chatter, and the suppressed laughter of the children in the other room, steeled her. She stared at the mare's glowing red eyes. "If I may, lady: might I have my future read?"

She glanced at her fur and back towards the other, there was a noticeable difference but she hadn't really thought she'd of gotten an answer back.

Sometimes being a smart-a** wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Being called my lady was pleasant though, she might stick around a bit more. It was better than being called gypsy or beggar, the latter of which she was not.

"I would suppose I'd stand out."

She followed the others lead. It was nice and she was gracious that she'd be fed for the night. Ears perked forward, so a taker eh

"I rarely give good news. But if you still insist I shall do that for you." Glowing gaze stared into the others, unmoving.

Lyra gulped, drowning the voice in her head that told her asking for such premonition would be to guarantee it come true—that it would be better to lie in ignorance and in peace. But she had always been a curious girl, even young, and the more she feared something the more she felt compelled to face it. "Your reputation precedes you, my lady." She licked her lips. "I know the risks and I would—I would take it."

She could see the thoughts racing behind her eyes and gave a small nod of her head. "If you wish, once we are settled if we can find a spot and I can do a reading for you." She was curious to see what would be laid before her in the bones. She felt the pouch against her neck bounce back and forth as they walked and she flicked her tiny tail behind her almost gleefully, it had been a while since she had done a reading. She was almost excited to tell this young mare some bad news. It was always bad news, so she never tried to pretend like it would be good news, but if they wanted to know, who was she to deny them? "I'll need a few moments to prepare before hand. Do you have any herbs in storage?" She had some but was curious if they might have any extra in stock.

Lyra's heart hammered in her chest, and she used all of her courtly learnings to veil it. "When you are well fed and rested, we might go into another room," she suggested, glad the mare had offered. It would not do to have her future told in the receiving room, where anyone might come in and hear. "In the meantime, I can get you your herbs." The herbs that grew in the northern snows might not have the properties the mare sought, but there were dried plants from the summer lands, too, received as gifts or part of trade. She hoped they'd have what the mare wanted—and that her parents wouldn't be too upset when they found she'd taken from the stores. "Which do you need?"

"Thank you, some warm food and rest is much needed after the journey I've had." She offered up towards the youngster as they walked along. When she offered to get her some herbs she smiled, this was indeed an accomidating location. She might have to come back again in the not so distant future. "I don't need all of them, either White Sage, Cedar, or Sweet Grass and Lavander or Copal. Only if you have it." She said not wanting to be too needy, she really just needed the one main thing, the lavander just made things smell nice. She did have the other things she needed so really it was just two of those things left and she'd be good to go whenever the filly was.

Lyra nodded briskly, recalling the lessons on plant identification that made up a part of her expansive education. The cedar wood and leaves were easy enough, for they grew lower down the mountain. Though the same couldn't be said for lavender, it had found enough culinary uses to be included as part of trade. She dallied longer than she needed to, even going so far as to reunite with the other children and join them in wild speculation of what she might be told. Though she was eager to know what awaited her, she wanted to give the mare some time, too, to relax and enjoy her meal in peace. When she thought enough time had passed, she re-entered the room, placing the items near the fire so they could be inspected. "Would these suit, my lady?"
