Liebe took a deep breath, holding it in her chest for a few seconds before slowly letting it out, counting the seconds until she inhaled again and watching her breath dance in the chilly morning air. She used breathing exercises as a way to combat her anxiety and concentration problems; the more she focused on the breathing, the quieter her brain became, which allowed her to function and focus on what was in front of her.

However, this time her mind immediately wandered back to the place she had tried to pull it out of, twisting with nervous thoughts and worries about what she was about to do. Her whole body felt freezing cold and burning hot all at once; was it really hot out? Did the temperature change suddenly?

She had been putting it off for days. Only a few months prior, she had met and fallen in love with her Glósóli; her sunshine on a cloudy day, the reason for the positive changes in her life. She gave her heart and soul to him, and he returned that love in kind. She wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of her life with him... but in her mind, what she had been keeping from him for so long could send him running. If he was not as happy about it as she was, he could leave and never speak to her again.

Taking another deep breath, Liebe tried to calm herself. Glósóli would never leave her. He was a kind, gentle stallion, who loved her fiercely and followed her dutifully through the forests and over the mountains, and only intervened when asked. She knew him better than to think he would leave her. In fact, the logical, calmer side of Liebe insisted he would be just as happy and excited as she was; at one time, she had believed that he would want it just as much as she did.

But there was still fear. She was still putting everything she had ever hoped for on the line. Liebe's mother Journey had gone through the same thing before Liebe was born... only Kiefer had left her instead of working through things with her. Kiefer was a coward. Glósóli was not.

She found him not too far from the small cave they had been living in while in the forest; he was gazing up at the thick pine trees all around them, inhaling the crisp morning air and stretching himself awake. When he noticed she was there, his eyes lit up, and his chest swelled as he grinned.

“Before you say anything,” Liebe began, cutting him off just as he opened his mouth. “I have something I have to tell you.” She hesitated as she met his gaze; he was still grinning, but now a tinge of worry clouded his sparkling eyes. It almost pained her, making him worry like that. She decided the easiest thing to do would be to just spit it out, before she backed out. Now or never.

“Gló... I'm pregnant.”

Glósóli awoke before Liebe, just as the first signs of the sun began peeking over the horizon. In the dim light in their cave, he could make out her dark shape curled up beside him, head resting on his shoulder as his wing wrapped around her. Her face was turned toward him, and betrayed no ill feelings; she looked tranquil and happy, even in sleep. He watched her for a few moments, counting her deep, slow breaths, debating his next move.

He did not want to wake her. Before they had met, she had said that she had terrible nightmares almost every night; abandonment and death were common themes, and he could tell they shook her to her core. Now she looked like she was dreaming peacefully, with a hint of a smile on her lips.

God, she was beautiful.

Slowly, carefully, he began to pull himself away from her, one wing and limb at a time. He stopped and waited, holding his breath, as she adjusted herself to his absence in her sleep. Once he had fully removed himself from her, he quietly made his way to the mouth of the cave, shivering at the cool, crisp air. He immediately regretted his decision to get up; it was a little colder than he anticipated, and Liebe was so warm and soft...

Glósóli forced himself out of the cave, tiptoeing until he was far enough away that she would not be able to hear his hooves crunching in the leaves and pine needles that covered the forest floor.

He thought himself very lucky. He and Liebe had not been together long, but he knew they were meant for each other; he thought of the songs he heard about love, and how they made sense now. He thought of how cold he felt without her there, and how it seemed like a part of him was missing. He thought of spending the rest of his life with her, growing old, starting a family...

Though his mind had been wandering as he walked, watching the treetops, now it stopped on that particular thought; family. The two had never discussed the possibility of having foals, and it worried him slightly. He wanted a large family, with lots of children, both biological and adopted. But Liebe's past, involving her father and brother leaving her and her mother alone, always made Glósóli question himself. She had been against stallions in general – especially golden ones – when they had met, but that obviously did not bother her now. Would raising foals be too much to ask?

He heard crunching close behind him, and when he turned, she was there; mane a slight mess from sleep, but looking more beautiful and radiant than ever. He grinned and felt his whole body fill up with love. He decided he did not care if she did not want foals; all he wanted was her.

Then she spoke. It felt like the whole world was crashing underneath him... what could she possibly need to tell him that required this sort of conversation?

“Gló... I'm pregnant.”

It took a few moments for it to register with him. Pregnant? Like... actually, for real, guaranteed pregnant? His brain was working overtime to process the information he was just given. Once it had worked its way through, he felt a bubbling sense of joy rise from his chest into his throat, and down each leg. Unabashed, he closed the gap between them in two strides and wrapped her in his wings as tightly as he could.

“Oh Liebe,” he whispered in her ear, fighting back the lump in his throat but letting the happy tears flow. “Oh Liebe, my love, my sunshine, my life. Liebe.” His whole being was on overload, with elation and fear and a mix of a dozen other emotions he could not identify.

“You've made me the happiest beast in this whole forest,” he said finally, quietly, pulling away to look at her face to judge her reaction, in awe of the amazing creature giving him the best news of his life as dawn broke over the horizon.

As they both grinned at each other, he laughed; “I'm gonna be a dad!”
