Book of Ghost

The Ghost type represents all of that which is dead and departed, and as such has attracted many a person to try and harness its powers, to attempted to sway control over death so that they may perhaps escape it or commune with someone on the other side. Regardless of their reason there have been many Ghost Channelers throughout history, more often than not being called things such as Mediums or Hex Maniacs. Whatever you call them they all desire one thing; power over the supernatural. And while many of them obtain it, more often than not it is at a price. The Renegade does not like his domain disturbed.

-The Renegade-

In the beginning the Original One breathed life into the world, and for one shining moment there was nothing but life. However, where there is life there must also be death. When time and space were given form so was a third, the Renegade. While time and space are aspects of the living world the Renegade ruled over an aspect of the opposite of life; nothingness, antimatter. The Original One was aware of the Renegade's violence and anger and so banished him to a dimension far beyond the living world, a place some call the Distortion World. Here the Renegade would dwell, its anger and jealousy ever growing as it watched from the other side the living world grow and take shape. Try would he shape his world to match it but it would always be nothing more than a crude and disorganized failure, furthering his anger.

In time however the Renegade would find an opportunity to enact revenge when his brothers, the Temporal One and the Spatial One clashed, time and space fighting over who shall reign supreme over this world. When his brothers were weakened from their fighting the Renegade, having discovered a way out of his prison, passed through into the living world and attacked his ken, hoping to defeat them both and claim the living world for himself. The Original One however had planned for this before he fell into his eternal slumber and three small creatures appeared to restrain the three brothers and banished them to their respective dimensions.

As punishment and perhaps even as a token of pity, the Original One having foreseen this transgression, the Renegade would find company in his world of nothingness. Whenever life ended in the beautiful world he so envied it would pass over into his, and there what was once alive would stay, forever in the company of the jealous Renegade. The Renegade would find a new purpose, one that would sate him but never fulfill him. If he could not reign over the world of the living he would reign of a world of death, a keeper of souls and a collector of all that was once beautiful and alive, never again damned to the still loneliness of nothing. The Distortion World, the Underworld, Hell, it matters not what you call it as it is all the same, a place of death, a mockery of the living world, a world for the Renegade to call his own.

-The Circles of the Underworld-

Just like the living world there are many stories to be told of the place beyond. While the other side is a senseless place with no direction the Renegade has tried his best to give it some structure and as such at the center of the endless near shapeless dimension there exists nine separate but connected plains of 'existence', or circles. Here is where the souls of the departed all eventually come. First, upon death, they arrive in a place called Limbo, the First Circle. Technically Limbo is actually not a proper part of the underworld but rather the place in between, however it does have a direct connection. Here the souls of the departed are judged by what humans would consider a 'demon', a once powerful and ancient Serperior hybrid that had earned the good graces of the Renegade for his actions during life and had been dubbed in the afterlife; Minos, King of Judgment and Guardian of Limbo. Here he judges the souls of the departed and determines which Circle of the Underworld they shall spend their days in, the deeper they go the more terrible their suffering. Some souls are doomed to remain here, a place not of suffering nor of paradise, but instead eternal indifference.

The next circle is Lust, a place that actually resembles the living world very closely. The Second Circle of the Underworld lacks much of suffering, instead it could be seen more of a constant temptation, just like that of the living world. Those who partook in excess of love are condemned here. Here souls will constantly be tempted by the vast beauty and almost utopia-like qualities of this place, as well as the vices and longings their hearts most desired in life. It is said Misdreavus and Mismagius originate from this place, the tricksters of Lust. Those who succumb to lust will have their souls consumed by the spirits so that they may cross over into the living world. A Ghost Channeler, named Hatshepsut, who once studied under the old master herself, Amaya, rules over the Second Circle after being damned to it. A beautifully androgynous individual whose specialty in Channeling in life were hallucinations, benefiting of such a place. While the Renegade did not permit such a takeover of Lust by a mortal soul he has not shown any signs of resistance, and in fact almost welcomed it as Hatshepsut has shown to be a skilled tempter of lust.

Circle number three is Gluttony, the indulgent are sent here to live the rest of eternity in a cold desolate land of uncaring abandon. A putrid wasteland plagued by a constant chilling rain and filled with the rotting excesses of which these souls indulged on in life. Here these souls are doomed to forever indulge themselves on their vice, be it food or entertainment, forever locked in a cycle of gluttony, always wanting to break out of it to meet their true potential, but never able to. The souls are guarded by manifestations of their true selves, Yamask. The masks they hold represent the true face of these gluttonous souls. Here the Yamask wait for a repenting soul to fix their masks to in order to claim their soul and flee to the living world so that they may fill out their true potential, but this rarely happens. It is unknown why the Renegade allows some of these Yamask to pass into the living world without a soul, perhaps as an even greater punishment so that they may witness the lives they could have had up close. Here at the heart of Gluttony dwells a creature of the Renegade's own creation, the swamp dweller and progenitor of the Pokemon Frillish; The Great Worm, Thul, Devourer of Souls. A massive grotesque Jellicent which feeds off of the souls of Gluttony, along with its children. While Thul does guard this circle it is also used as a feeding and breeding ground for it.

The fourth circle is Greed, a land of endless wealth and riches, with nothing to spend it on. You can imagine the kind who are sent here. Like all circles the River Styx runs through Greed but it is here where the only currency accepted by its ferryman can be found. Obol are coins which the departed souls need to ride the River Styx to reach their circle of eternity (or in some rare cases, paradise), or else they are damned to Limbo. Ordinarily a soul is given one coin when they die, but they are some rare exceptions, either way they all come from the stockpile hoarded by this circle's ruler. You see, Greed is ruled over by a Cofagrigus hybrid who in life was a terribly greedy prince whose love for gold sent him here, however legend states that the prince, Maemen, managed to pay off the Renegade for permission to rule over Greed, however the truth may just be that the Renegade simply did not care either way as Maemen's punishments for the souls here was benefit. The damned souls of Greed are forever doomed to mine the gold which are used for Obol coins, and yet just to see gold makes them sick and to touch it burns them, and yet they must mine it, for their greedy souls compel them. For his entertainment he forces the souls here to fight each other in tournaments for the prize of anything they desire, and yet no one wins as Maemen rigs the final match by making them fight his near invincible creature, the Gilded Golurk. One person has defeated his monster however, Snagem's own Odd.

[The rest of the entry on the Circles of the Underworld is written in an indecipherable language. Must not be translated all the way yet.]

-Amaya's School of the Spiritual Arts-

Hundreds of years ago there lived a very powerful and skilled Ghost Channeler, a woman who is said to have been able to summon forth spirits from the great beyond at will and could even commune with the Renegade himself. From the world over Amaya was renowned for her spiritual abilities, so much so that she was seen as a sort of messiah in her time, something which she did not appreciate. Others considered her a witch and wanted her dead. In order to dispel the hyperbole around her person Amaya founded a school atop Mt. Pyre, a place where spiritual forces were strong and the veil between this world and the next weak.

It is at Amaya's school where Amaya would draw together those with the latent potential to tap into spiritual forces and teach them to harness their abilities. While Amaya did have some successes it was never to the extent that she desired and so the great Channeler sought out ways to beat death so that she may continue her work, to continue to teach the world. Amaya believed that there was a way to prevent death all together, at least for the spiritual self, and if she could figure it out perhaps she could teach her students and the world. She viewed death as preventable as any other disease.

The Ghost Channeler would succeed in 'defeating' death when her physical body gave out, but much to her chagrin she was unable to pass on her teachings to her students as not one of them was able to register her presence, all of them far too unskilled to do so. As such upon her death her students moved on and her school fell apart. While disappointed Amaya continued to dwell at her school, continuing to research the spiritual world in her new spectral form, hoping that one day someone would find the secret she left behind; the Killing Stone.

In her endeavor to defeat death Amaya created a special artifact she dubbed the Killing Stone, named aptly for the processes needed to create it, of which she is not proud of but also not ashamed. The stone is actually crystallized spiritual energy, powered by unworthy souls of which consumes. She had created several of these stones before her death and hid them in her school, hoping one day a worthy individual would find them so that they may commune with her and take the steps towards mastering Ghost Channeling and reaching the pinnacle of which she did; a total defiance of death.

Tui and La, a pair of spirits which Amaya met when she transcended, dwell in a pond in front of her school in the form of oppositely colored Goldeen. They help judge and guide those who wish to seek out their master's tutelage.

A few individuals are known to have been taught by Amaya: Odd, Hatshepsut, and the ancestor of Countess Pump and Count Geist, with an unknown fourth existing as well. A certain family once had a feud with Amaya and her school and some believe they are responsible for Amaya's demise.

Amaya also has a sister, a twin named Maya, who is also a powerful Channeler who defeated death, however a Psychic Channeler.

-Jack of the Lantern-

Legend tails of a not particularly powerful Ghost Channeler but a cunning one named Jack who once managed to pull a trick over on the Renegade himself. Jack was a thief in life who abused his abilities for personal gain, plaguing the world with his trickery and misdeeds for many years. Jack's antics would come to an abrupt end one day as the Renegade himself appeared before him to claim his soul, the legend recognizing how devious this person was and so desired to claim his soul himself. Jack however, ever cunning, managed to trick the Renegade into letting go of the object he needed to remain in his true form in the mortal realm; the Grisious Orb.

Jack had used his whits and abilities to convince the Renegade that he could not exist in his world without the orb. Insulted the Renegade sat aside the orb and took on a more grounded, and weak form, to prove Jack wrong. In this moment Jack had switched the orb out for a fake and when the Renegade went to reclaim his orb he discovered not only was it a fake but Jack had fled. Jack had succeeded in defeating death as he left the master of the underworld in his weakened state.

Eventually Jack would seek out the Renegade as his physical body continued to weak, Jack realizing that death would eventually come and so he made a deal with the Renegade. In return for his Grisious Orb the Renegade had to promise to not claim his soul. With glee the Renegade agreed and in exchange gave him a lump of burning coal, the NeverFadeFlame, a piece of the underworld of which Jack would never experience as well as a symbol of the light above which he would never witness.

When Jack's physical body gave away his spirit remained on Earth, as promised. Permitted to never pass on Jack would roam the Earth caring the NeverFadeFlame in a lantern, his only source of life and warmth in an existence which lacks both. Jack would go on to torment and trick the living for many years until he crossed Snagem and was confined to his lantern by the Ghost Channeler Odd. Many times he would try to escape from his lantern but would always fail. To this day he dwells within his own lantern, cursing the name of Odd, his warden. Jack longs for the day where he may continue to unleash his tricks upon the world once more.

-House of Pump-

Several hundred years ago there lived a nobleman in the Kalos region named Count Eustace de Pump. Count Pump, as he went by, ruled over a county which its boundaries were mostly composed of Route 15 and 16 in Kalos, centered around what is now the Lost Hotel. Count Pump was an eccentric man who took a keen interest into the occult, studying it intensely, much to the suspicions of his fellow nobility. The name Pump was not the original name of his house and instead a change he made to reflect his affection towards the Pokemon Pumpkaboo, of which was a native species in his county and which he took an interest in breeding more larger ones. His breeding efforts can be seen today with the sheer number of Pumpkaboo in Kalos as well as their high variation in size.

The House of Pump would find its fortune in not only breeding prized Pumpkaboo, which did find a niche among royalty for a time as having particularly large ones were a sign of status, but also in vacation retreats. Count Pump would construct many of a villa in his county, creating beautiful lodgings and immaculate landscapes for his fellow nobility to enjoy. His villas were so famous that even the king and queen of Kalos were routinely vacation at them.

However, things would not go so for well for the house of Pump. Eustace III, grandson to the original Count Pump, would continue his grandfather's legacy of interest in the occult, however took it to a greater extreme and was very open in his fascination. He would hold seances and entertain mediums from the world over at his villas. It is claimed that once they brought a stone statue to life by capturing a spirit in it. The King was no longer able to ignore the 'eccentric' house of Pump and so during the Great Purge, which also saw many hybrids banished, the king seized the lands of the house of Pump and added them to the royal holdings. Now without the income provided by their villas the house of Pump fell into financial ruin, but that would not stop Eustace III from seeking out the answers of the occult.

Eustace III would travel to the Hoenn region, where he heard of a woman who could not only speak to the dead but defied death its self; Grand Master Amaya. Eustace III would go onto discover a Killing Stone and commune with Amaya, learning all he could from her. While he never fully completed his training and learned how to defy death like her, he did learn much. Eustace III would have to cut short his training when summoned back to Kalos, to help his almost destitute family escape the chaos that followed the Great Purge. Eustace III would never train under Amaya again upon his return to Kalos but he would teach his children and they theirs the way of Ghost Channeling, and his grandfather's love of Pumpkaboo.

At least one descendant of Eustace I and Eustace III still lives today, a woman who goes by Countess Pump. She choose to live at the remains of her family's greatest villa, what is now called the Lost Hotel, not just out of sentimental reasons but because the old villa was purposely built over a portal which leads to the underworld when opened. Here she guards the portal and carries on her family's legacy.

Her cousin, a man who dubbed himself Count Geist, once tried to seize the reigns of head of the house of Pump from her and reclaim their power in Kalos by opening the portal and harnessing the power of the underworld by using Jack's lantern as a key. Fortunately he was stopped by Snagem, something he would never forgive them for. Count Geist however would never get his revenge as he met his end at the hands of a Gengar hybrid from another reality, a vile creature known as Dull. And so with Count Geist's death Countess Pump is the last of her lineage.
