Herbology 101
Being in such a remote part of the Kawani lands, The Forgemaster has had to learn to fend for himself. However, sometimes he needs a little extra help and relies on the local plants to create potions and salves to cure his ailments.

Goal: Find the herbs and mix them together to make a salve!
Instructions: Roll 3d6 and match them to the list below. These are the ingredients you've chosen for your salve!

  1. You pick some sweet berries. They're blue in colour and have a funny after taste and they make your tongue tingle. (+1 potency )
  2. You find some odd shaped leaves. The smell musty and you aren't game enough to try but how much harm could they really do? (-2 potency)
  3. You pick some clear water from a nearby spring. It's cool and is the cleanest thing you've ever tasted. (+5 potency)
  4. Your pick some purple flowers. In the back of your mind, you swear you recall being warned about them as a foal... (-5 potency)
  5. You choose some aloe, soothing and cool. (+2 potency)
  6. You choose some seaweed growing in the river. It doesn't have much of a negative effect but it's slimy and the taste is off putting. (-1 potency)

Now that you've chosen your ingredients you need to make your salve! Roll 1d6 and match your result below!
Odd: You have absolutely no idea what you're doing and you spill half your salve while mixing it! (-5 potency)
Even: Your a natural! Even if your ingredients were questionable, everything seems to have come together nicely! (+5 potency)

Reward: Tally up your score and match to the results below!
0 - 5 potency: Your "medicine" leaves the Forgemaster stuck in bed for days violently ill. He prays for death but also fears it has truly come for him. While he's sleeping, you manage to slip a gold piece from his coin purse. You did warn him that you weren't that great at identifying herbs! (+1 gold piece)
6 - 10: The potion doesn't seem to have any effect at all. He knows you tried your best, however, and he grants you a reward. (+2 gold pieces)
11 - 15: The potion has a pretty positive effect! While it won't solve all his problems, it does invigorate him and give him plenty of energy to get through the day without any groans or sighs! (+3 gold pieces)
16 - 20: This is the greatest potion The Forgemaster has ever had in his life! He swears you've created the elixir of life. (+5 gold pieces)

Okay. She could do this. She was a Healer for the Thunderbird Herd, after all, and had learned a lot growing up into the role. Deep breath, Ora, she thought to herself, looking around at all the unfamiliar plants. There were many she recognized, certainly, but not enough to make a potent salve. She'd have to get creative and add something that didn't grow around the herd lands, something she didn't recognize. She could look for similarities, though -- textures, colors, taste... if she could find something similar to the plants back at home, maybe she could whip up a makeshift alternative. It would be nice to use the gold coins she'd earned to bring back some tools to the Herd -- or some weapons. She didn't know which they'd need more. Maybe she could talk to Windwaker and get his opinions on a few things -- and just like that, even the thought of her mate brought a bright smile to her face, a bounce in her step. She began humming a random tune as she explored, stopping to pick several sweet berries that she knew were fun to eat, but also had some mild healing properties. Useful.

Bismuth was following the scents on the ground, trying to track down some plants to help. He certainly wasn't as skilled as his bonded, but he'd picked up a thing or two -- enough to recognize a couple plants. He passed a few bushes before he stumbled upon something that smelled familiar, sniffing closely at the plant to be sure. "Ora, over here! Some aloe!" he called out to her, tail wagging happily at the success of his find. He knew aloe was very useful in healing salves -- this would definitely be a good addition.

"Ah, perfect!" Ora perked up as she trotted over, examining the leaves to pick out the healthiest looking ones, adding them to her collection of berries. "Not quite enough to make a complete salve, but we're definitely almost there. I'm just having trouble finding something I know of... I really need to learn more about the plants away from our herd." She said with a frown, following her wolf deeper into the forest. "Oh... look at these!" she called Bismuth over, sniffing at the strangely shaped leaves. They didn't look familiar, but the smell was similar to something she used frequently at home. Which is to say: Badly. She decided to pluck a few to add to the salve -- surely they would work well enough as a substitute.

With all of the ingredients gathered, she settled down to put them together. Ora mashed up the berries in a mortar first, mushing them down until they were in a nice, liquid consistency, easy enough to mix in further plants. Next was the aloe -- crushing the leaves to squeeze out the innards into the bowl, making sure not to add too much and overwhelm the helpful properties of the berries. And now... the leaves. She stared at them for a moment, trying to figure out the best way to incorporate them. They could be useful in two ways -- crushing them up into the existing mix, and using them to apply the salve to an open wound. She would have to use guesswork to figure out how much to add, but with any luck, she'd get it at least mostly right. She added two leaves to the berry and aloe mush, crushing the mixture up to blend in the bits of leaves. When she was done, she stepped back with a frown, feeling unsure of what she'd just created.

"So..." Bismuth began slowly, taking a careful sniff of the mixture. "Is it... done?"

"I... think so? Something seems off, but I don't think it's harmful." She applied a little to herself, just to make sure -- she wouldn't want to bring any harm to the Forgemaster. He seemed like a nice stallion, just a little rough around the edges. Like Balrog. The thought made her smile. She and Bismuth waited for a while, but when nothing happened to the area she'd applied the salve, they both agreed that it was probably safe to hand over.

Of course, they'd expected it to do something, in the end. Whatever components were in those strange leaves seemed to cancel out any good the aloe and berries could have done. Ora felt embarrassed when the Forgemaster paid her a little anyway, but didn't turn the coin down. She supposed she still had a lot to learn about salves and potions.
